Adaptive Change For An All Boys College Preparatory Public Middle School: A Change Leadership Project, Carla L. Sparks Dr.
Adaptive Change For An All Boys College Preparatory Public Middle School: A Change Leadership Project, Carla L. Sparks Dr.
Dissertations
As a result of district, state, and national attention on academic achievement, as measured by state assessment tests and end of course examinations, teacher and school leaders at the school identified for this Change Leadership Project (CLP) have worked diligently to raise student rigor and achievement. However, they have used largely instructional practices that rely heavily on the work of educators rather than emphasizing the engagement of students. This CLP provides the basis for a paradigm shift in instructional practice that promotes a full understanding of the value of authentic learning, project based learning, exhibitions of mastery, and capstone projects …
Enhancing Apprentice Training Through Supervision Of Work Experience, J. Scott Christman
Enhancing Apprentice Training Through Supervision Of Work Experience, J. Scott Christman
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
To remain globally competitive, U.S. companies need to consider new strategies for developing a workforce. The apprenticeship model has been identified as a viable solution for companies to invest. The problem of this study was to determine if an apprenticeship experience was enhanced by the type of supervision given during the work-related component of a program. To aid current and potential companies offering apprenticeship programs, this study identified a population of apprentices (N = 877), tracked them from entry into the program until five years after graduating, and analyzed their outcomes relative to program completion, academic GPA, work-related GPA, …
Training Model For Incorporating Interactive Whiteboards Into The K-12 Classroom, Elizabeth G. Jamerson
Training Model For Incorporating Interactive Whiteboards Into The K-12 Classroom, Elizabeth G. Jamerson
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
School divisions have been implementing interactive whiteboards, as well as other instructional technologies, in ever-increasing numbers with the intent to improve student performance. The benefits of these technologies have been hotly debated, with some researchers claiming that interactive whiteboards improve student achievement, while others claim that the technologies have no effect on student progress. Other researchers concluded that interactive whiteboards are tools which can improve student achievement only if they are used effectively. Research has further suggested that teachers need high quality professional development that incorporates both formal and informal elements to assist teachers incorporate interactive whiteboards into the K-12 …
Effective Techniques For Teaching Phrasal Verbs To Improve The Communicative Competence Of Chinese English Learners, Guohua Fu
Master's Projects and Capstones
This project provides a teaching guidebook for both English as a Second Language (ESL) students and teachers. Most learners do not know how to use phrasal verbs in their daily conversation even if they have already learned them. Moreover, it is hard for students to remember phrasal verbs they learned if they don’t practice them in meaningful contexts. This project will address the problem of the ineffective instruction of English in China and the exclusion of two-word verbs from the Chinese curriculum. Due to the differences in linguistic and education backgrounds, ESL teachers and students desire a guidebook that is …

Applying Reflection And Self-Assessment Practices To Integrative Stem Lessons: A Design-Based Research Study To Develop An Instrument For Elementary Practitioners, Diana V. Cantu
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
This study utilized design-based research (DBR) to develop an empirically substantiated local instruction theory about the use of self-assessment and reflection in creating and assessing integrative STEM lessons. The research goals that guided this study are:
1. Determine the initial STEM self-efficacy level for the study's participants. 2. Utilize theories of reflection and self-assessment to create an instrument for preparing and assessing an integrative STEM lesson. 3. Refine the instrument through two Design-Based Research macro cycles to ensure appropriate content and applicability for use in a K-2 elementary classroom.
A conjectured local instruction theory was developed through the study's literature …
Towards An Understanding Of The Use Of Digital Media To Facilitate The Inclusion Of Children With Learning Disabilities In Mainstream Primary School Classrooms, Róisín Garvey
Masters
Inclusion, or the integration into mainstream classrooms of students with learning difficulties, should strive to make the students’ education sufficiently challenging while also making considerations for their particular capabilities and needs. A key aspect of inclusion is the requirement for appropriate support services and additional aids for both students and teachers. Digital media can be effective in helping to facilitate learning and can provide opportunities for engagement, peer learning, curriculum support and assessment. It can also promote collaborative and cooperative learning when the educational content is tailored to the capabilities of individual students. Finding teaching strategies that are suitable for …
Blended Learning For Gifted And Talented Students, Chris John Hergenrader
Blended Learning For Gifted And Talented Students, Chris John Hergenrader
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Blended learning is a curriculum presentation method that includes both online and face-to-face aspects. Educators who use blended learning tout it for its ability to allow for effective differentiation of instruction while bringing increased use of technology into the classroom. It is seen as an improvement to online learning in that blended learning maintains the traditional classroom teacher to guide and develop the class while incorporating the online component. Gifted and talented students are often the forgotten population within schools as they are typically viewed to be successful in classes despite the fact they may not be reaching their full …
Evaluating Teacher Immediacy In K-12 Online Learning Environments, Lisa M. Silmser
Evaluating Teacher Immediacy In K-12 Online Learning Environments, Lisa M. Silmser
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Educators who serve students in online classrooms display a unique set of skills necessary to engage students, however little research and no teacher evaluation tools exist to guide K-12 online teachers in the evidence-based practices needed to perfect their craft. The research that does exist focuses on the post-secondary classroom which is assumed to be significantly different from K-12 environments. Using a Delphi study, an expert group of MN K-12 online educators confirmed that the research from the college level related to teacher immediacy and interaction, the teacher behaviors that most impact student engagement, are applicable to the K-12 online …

Formative Assessment For Collaborative Knowledge Building In Chinese Elementary Science Classrooms, Jingping Chen
Formative Assessment For Collaborative Knowledge Building In Chinese Elementary Science Classrooms, Jingping Chen
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The purpose of this study is to design and evaluate a technology supported collaborative formative assessment for knowledge building to help students reflect on the progress of their knowledge advancement and to sustain deeper inquiry. Guided by the knowledge building theory ( Scardamalia & Berieter, 2003; Scardamalia & Berieter, 2006) and the formative assessment framework (Wiliam & Thompson, 2007), a two-phase design based research was conducted to test and refine the assessment design in the six-grade science classrooms at a Chinese elementary school. The assessment was designed as a technology supported, student-directed formative assessment which focused on three major attributes …

An Examination Of The Effects Of A Technology-Based Graphic Organizer (Tbgo) And The Ipad On The Persuasive Writing Of Fourth-Grade Students With And Without Disabilities, Julienne Marie Cuccio Slichko
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Writing strategies, such as graphic organizers and mnemonic devices, have supported students in planning in advance of writing and technology has the potential to alleviate the burden of handwriting fatigue for struggling writers. Furthermore, under the Common Core State Standards (CCSS, 2010), fourth-graders are expected to be able to use technology to compose essays across writing genres. The integration of mobile technologies, such as the iPad, is becoming commonplace in education at all levels; however, little empirical research currently supports the iPad as a medium for written expression. This study adds to the current research base by conducting the first …
