This qualitative study conducted in-depth interviews with 20 undergraduates and 14 parents about the students’ experiences in ballet. Through reflexive thematic analysis based on a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, six themes emerged as …

Transition Programs To Facilitate Employment For Young Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Lillian I. Usen Dec 2023

Transition Programs To Facilitate Employment For Young Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Lillian I. Usen

Anthropology

It is well-documented in the literature that individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have difficulty transitioning from school to the workforce. This group experiences challenges adjusting to the expectations of the workforce and a high unemployment rate is reported among adults with ASD. There are several notable barriers that inhibit adults with ASD from achieving gainful employment: inadequate preparation for the demands of the workforce, especially along vocational and social skill domains, are likely impacting this issue. Deficits in social skills and communication are reported as key factors that contribute to low employment and low employment skill retention among individuals …

Judith Shakespeare's Problem : Ssing Timss To Examine Contextual Indicators In Girls' Mathematics Achievement, Elizabeth Ann S. Kelly May 2022

Additionally, the focus is on girls as a standalone, independent population, not in comparison to boys. This research seeks to understand at which level of society the most variability is found, as well as analyze the comparative effect sizes of various explanatory contextual predictors within …

Exploring Academic Procrastination With Digital Trace Data, Semih Bursali Jan 2022

Exploring Academic Procrastination With Digital Trace Data, Semih Bursali

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Procrastination is a well-known phenomenon experienced by a lot of people in everyday life. People sometimes intentionally, sometimes unintentionally put off their tasks even though they might be worse off due to the delay (e.g., not paying bills due, even though they have sufficient funds in their bank account). It is safe to say everybody procrastinates at some point, but in academia the rate is relatively higher. This dissertation is an exploratory study of the relationship and differences between self-reported academic procrastination and observed procrastination in relation to students’ achievement goal orientations and self-regulated learning. A time-management/productivity mobile application (Proccoli) …

This was investigated using data from the Diagnostic Assessment and Achievement of College Skills (DAACS) project, and includes 9,276 undergraduate, mostly adult students from two online institutions in the United States. The results indicate that while grit, its two components, and mindset were significantly correlated with …

Effects Of Early Bilingualism On Theory Of Mind Development Among Children In Economic Adversity, Rong Huang Jan 2022

Effects Of Early Bilingualism On Theory Of Mind Development Among Children In Economic Adversity, Rong Huang

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The present study investigated the associations between bilingualism and Theory of Mind (ToM) development among children from low-income backgrounds. ToM is the capacities of understanding others’ mental states, such as beliefs, knowledge, or emotions, which develops rapidly during early childhood. Previous studies showed that bilingual experience may be associated with an enhanced ToM, while it is less known whether the similar effect can be generalized to the low-income populations. In addition, it remained unclear what role of Executive Function (EF) plays in the relationship between bilingualism and Theory of Mind in economically disadvantaged environments. The current study aims to address …

Evaluating The Effects Of Virtual Professional Development And Teleconsultation In Teachers' Implementation Of Check-In/Check-Out, Rachel Kengle Jan 2022

Evaluating The Effects Of Virtual Professional Development And Teleconsultation In Teachers' Implementation Of Check-In/Check-Out, Rachel Kengle

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Check-in/check-out (CICO) is one of the most researched and implemented Tier 2 interventions, and there is ample research to indicate that it is efficient and effective. It has been noted that teachers typically do not successfully implement evidence-based practices (EBPs) after participating in traditional models of professional development (PD); however, research indicates that consultation improves teachers’ implementation of EBPs. Teleconsultation is new within schools, but there is evidence that it is an acceptable replacement for face-to-face consultation.

Examining The Potential Of Epigenetic Age To Mediate The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Locus Of Control Using The Alspac Cohort, Christopher Reddy Jan 2022

Examining The Potential Of Epigenetic Age To Mediate The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Locus Of Control Using The Alspac Cohort, Christopher Reddy

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are negative events and environments (e.g., poverty) that occur during childhood and are known to undermine health and wellbeing. Adverse childhood experiences are related to cognitive outcomes in populations of children. A specific area of cognition associated with ACEs is locus of control (LoC). While the association between ACEs and LoC is clear, what is not well understood is how—that is, through what mechanism—ACEs influence LoC. The purpose of this research was to evaluate epigenetic age as a potential mechanism connecting ACEs with LoC. To address this hypothesis, a mediation model was evaluated using the Accessible …

Sampling Distribution Of Non-Overlap Indices Using Bootstrapping Procedure : A Monte Carlo Simulation Study And Empirical Demonstration, Xinyun Xu Jan 2022

Sampling Distribution Of Non-Overlap Indices Using Bootstrapping Procedure : A Monte Carlo Simulation Study And Empirical Demonstration, Xinyun Xu

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Statistics can be either parametric or non-parametric, depending on whether distributional assumptions about the data and sampling distributions are required. Parametric and non-parametric approaches each include a variety of inferential methods. These methods can be seen in the field of single-case experimental design (SCED). By reviewing one of the most used groups of statistics for SCED research (Jamshidi et al., 2022; Maggin et al., 2011), the non-overlap indices, one major issue arose. It is challenging to make inferences and interpretations about non-overlap indices. The main reason for this issue is that non-overlap indices have inconsistent and unknown sampling distributions (under …

First Amendment Knowledge And Competence In United States Residents, Cynthia J. Najdowski, Kimberly M. Bernstein May 2021

First Amendment Knowledge And Competence In United States Residents, Cynthia J. Najdowski, Kimberly M. Bernstein

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Lacking adequate knowledge about one's rights could inhibit the likelihood of exercising one's rights or lead one to unwittingly violate laws that place legitimate limits on these rights. Thus, the present research examines First Amendment knowledge as well as competence to apply this knowledge in relevant circumstances. Results revealed that one-quarter of participants failed a test of objective knowledge on First Amendment rights. Furthermore, participants' belief in their ability varied depending on their level of knowledge, in line with the Dunning–Kruger effect. Participants also failed to transfer their limited objective knowledge to “real-world” situations, exhibiting impaired First Amendment competence. These …

An Evaluation Of A Phonemic Awareness Program For Middle School Students And Its Impact On Academic Achievement, Valdis Sigrun Rice

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

With general instruction, most students’ reading skills develop overtime. For some, additional intervention in certain areas is necessary to acquire expected reading ability. One of five components of reading as identified by the National Reading Panel (NRP; National Institute of Child Health and Human Development [NICHD], 2000) included phonemic awareness (PA). Recognized as necessary to develop more complex skills, interventions for students’ PA abilities is thought by some to increase overall reading performance (Kilpatrick, 2013; 2015). One school district developed and implemented a new class program with the goal of increasing middle school students’ overall academic outcomes through targeted intervention …

Associations Between Adolescent Aggressive Behavior Problems With Distinct Parental Monitoring And Parental Knowledge : Mothering Versus Fathering, Panpan Yang

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Research with a focus on adolescent aggression often measures parental monitoring and parental knowledge interchangeably. However, parental monitoring refers to parent-driven behaviors that are related but distinct from parental knowledge. Mixed measures of parental monitoring and parental knowledge may lead to misunderstanding about how these parenting behaviors are related to adolescent aggression. This study aims to uncover the possible unique associations between adolescent aggression and parental monitoring as well as parental knowledge by 1) distinguishing the measure of parental monitoring from the measure of parental knowledge and 2) simultaneously controlling for these two dimensions of parenting with each other. Five-wave …

An Examination Of Response To Intervention Implementation In New York State, Job Thomas

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The New York State Education Department required that all school districts implement Response to Intervention by July 1, 2012. Given that measurable change can be expected between one and three years after prioritizing actions of change, this study will examine the level to which the Response to Intervention framework is being prioritized in New York schools and districts. Specifically, this study will examine practitioner self-reported perception of implementation to determine the extent to which school districts participating in a statewide personnel development project incorporate the four components of RtI including, multi-level prevention system, screening, progress monitoring and data-based decision making.

Demographic Differences In Post-Secondary Outcomes Following Participation In The Diagnostic Assessment And Achievement Of College Skills Intervention, Jana Vanderslice-Barr Jan 2020

Demographic Differences In Post-Secondary Outcomes Following Participation In The Diagnostic Assessment And Achievement Of College Skills Intervention, Jana Vanderslice-Barr

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The majority of high school seniors are unprepared for post-secondary coursework in mathematics and reading (National Assessment of Educational Progress, 2019). Research shows traditional methods for bolstering college readiness skills to be ineffective, unnecessary for the majority of students, and associated with negative outcomes (Jaggars & Stacey, 2014). Another approach to enhancing college readiness is to offer newly enrolled college students the opportunity to assess their level of readiness, and take steps to become better prepared on their own. The Diagnostic Assessment and Achievement of College Skills (DAACS) system was developed with this purpose in mind. The DAACS is intended …

The Reliability Of Single-Item Assessments, Sijun Zhang Jan 2020

The Reliability Of Single-Item Assessments, Sijun Zhang

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Single-item assessments have become more popular recently in distinct areas, even though there is no consensus about whether they are sufficiently reliable. Researchers have developed methods to estimate the reliability of single-item assessments, some are based on factor analysis (method FA), correction for attenuation (method CA), and others employ Molenaar and Sijtsma’s theory (method MS), coefficient λ6 (method λ6), or latent class model (method LCRC). However, no empirical study has investigated which method estimates the reliability of single-item assessment most precisely. This study investigated this question via a simulation study. To represent assessments as found in practice, the simulation study …
