Accreditation And Assessment In Distance Learning, Janice M. Karlen
Accreditation And Assessment In Distance Learning, Janice M. Karlen
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
All accredited institutions in the United States that are involved in distance learning initiatives need to be concerned about how their programs and courses will be viewed by accreditation organizations. A review of the policies of several major accreditation associations and professional groups, national, regional and specialized, yields similar results when issues of distance learning are concerned. These requirements are reviewed. Virtually all accreditors require evidence of regular assessment processes. Alternative methods for conducting these assessments are proposed.

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
This study was conducted to establish baseline information about Ivy Tech State College academic chairs’ personal/background characteristics and to determine those chairs’ rating of the importance of their tasks and their perceptions of the job challenges they will face in the future. In addition, the study compared Ivy Tech chairs’ personal/ background characteristics and perceptions of their tasks and job challenges with the findings of the 1992 International Community College Chair Survey. Although there were some statistically different ratings, in essence both samples of chairs highly rate the importance of their myriad tasks and they are in general agreement as …

Managing Contemporary Uk Universities – Manager-Academics And New Managerialism, Rosemary Deem, Oliver Fulton, Sam Hillyard, Rachel Johnson, Mike Reed, Stephen Watson
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
A multi-disciplinary project entitled ‘New Managerialism and the Management of UK Universities’ was conducted by a team of researchers based at Lancaster University between October 1998 and November 2000. The study was funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (grant no R000237661). The project was designed to examine the extent to which ‘New Managerialism’, a set of reforms of the management of publicly-funded services popular with many western governments, was perceived to have permeated the management of UK universities. The study also explored the roles, practices, selection, learning and support of manager-academics. The first phase of the study …

Profile Of Women Trustees At Land Grant Institutions: Roles, Responsibilities, And Reflections, Darla J. Twale, Joanne E. Burley
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
A study of 49 women trustees at land grant universities showed that they were well educated and highly involved in civic and professional affairs. As trustees, they were heavily involved in the life of the campus and were making substantial sacrifices to do so. The data indicated women were being selected for subcommittees but not necessarily the most powerful ones. While some women accepted the position to represent the female perspective, their comments urged women to be cautious if they want to be an effective voice.

Teaching In The Information Age: Leadership Aspects Of Integrated Learning With Technology In Democratic Environments, Patrick Mendis
Teaching In The Information Age: Leadership Aspects Of Integrated Learning With Technology In Democratic Environments, Patrick Mendis
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Teaching as a collaborative enterprise can further be enhanced by the use of integrated learning methods and the infusion of technology. Teacher as a leader must then work as a catalyst to facilitate this learning process. A creation of democratic environment has become increasingly easier with the use of the technology. Yet, the right attitude in leadership and the adaptive challenge are as equally important as the infusion of technology into classroom learning and teaching. Teacher is still the noble master and technology is the revolutionary servant in a more democratic world.

Kohlberg And Fowler: Two Models For Considering The Moral Progress Of College Students, Tim Herrmann
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
Fostering moral development has been an important goal of American higher education throughout its history. This goal has become especially prominent in light of recent developments related to crime, ethical indifference and deteriorating social structures. This topic is of particular relevance to faith-based institutions as the fostering of moral development is vitally related to their collective mission and purposes.
The literature of moral development contains a number of prominent and plausible theoretical approaches. However, two of the most prominent and highly developed are, Lawrence Kohlberg’s theory of moral judgment development and James Fowler’s theory of faith development. Each of these …
