The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of young adults who were retained during their K-12 education and persisted to high school graduation from a southwestern Kansas school. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe perceived self-efficacy as it relates to the persistence of first-generation Black college men at two public and one private Christian institution of higher education in the state of Texas. The theory that guided this study was Bandura’s self-efficacy as it provided the theoretical framework. Tinto’s student integration model was used in this research to analyze Tinto’s concept of academic and social integration relevant to first-generation Black college men’s persistence. The following research described a correlational study to examine whether there was correlation between reading motivation and reading engagement on students’ outcomes on the HMH Reading Inventory® in Title I schools for students reading below grade level in grades three through five. Additionally, the research indicated the importance of utilizing motivation and engagement to increase reading achievement. A Phenomenological Study Of How Black South African University Students Experience Cultural Identity In An English-Medium Instruction Context, Arthur Kent Cason

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the experience of cultural identity in an English-medium instruction context for Black university students in South Africa. Data were collected from 10 Black South African university students representing a cross-section of South African society. In-depth individual interviews were used as the primary data collection method complemented by a focus group interview and self-reflection letters written to a hypothetical new student in which the participant recalls his or her experience with cultural identity. Data analysis followed Moustakas’ methodology involving bracketing biases, horizonalization, organizing and classifying significant statements into themes, writing the textural …
