“Listen To Me” – A Systematic Literature Review About Learning From Others’ Failure Narrations, Verena Liszt-Rohlf
“Listen To Me” – A Systematic Literature Review About Learning From Others’ Failure Narrations, Verena Liszt-Rohlf
International Journal for Business Education
The dedicated stream of learning from others’ failure has gained increasing attention in entrepreneurship education research and—because of the COVID-19 crisis—among practitioners. The emerging literature on entrepreneurship education addresses this important phenomenon but lacks specific theoretical underpinnings; its new approaches to and empirical inquiry are one-sided. Therefore, a systematic literature review is warranted to provide a more comprehensive view of learning from others’ entrepreneurial failures and to develop a research model. Unprecedentedly, the author explores the type of research streams and gaps that can be included in a research model for entrepreneurship education research in the area of learning from …

Peer Observation As A Job-Embedded Professional Development Tool, Daniel J. Breiman
Peer Observation As A Job-Embedded Professional Development Tool, Daniel J. Breiman
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Teacher professional development is typically provided outside of the workplace, and is therefore disconnected to daily classroom practices. An alternative model of professional development is peer observation, which is contextualized through coaching and collaboration in the classroom. To date, research and investigation into the practice of peer observation is lacking. To fill that gap, this study examined the influence of peer observation on teacher practice, while identifying factors that were most beneficial and challenging about peer observation and its influence on workplace collegiality.
This study used qualitative methods and action research that allowed teachers to be part of the research …

Identity Politics, State Standards, And On The Ground Realities: A Critical Policy Analysis Of Teaching/Learning Gender/Sexuality In A Virginia Elementary School, Stefanie Hudson
Theses and Dissertations
Even though America has seen an increase in the level of acceptance for people who identify as LGBTQ and/or gender non-conforming, certain aspects within society continue to hinder their rights, especially within public education. Specifically, there are insufficiencies regarding content of and attitudes toward including LGBTQ issues in teaching and leadership training programs. Add to that, the deficits in most Family Life Education (FLE) programs in elementary schools as they lack adequate coverage of developmentally appropriate teaching and learning about gender and sexuality. Taken together, it remains questionable whether the needs of LGBTQ and/or gender non-conforming children can truly be …
Extended Learning Time, Ivette M. Febo
Extended Learning Time, Ivette M. Febo
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Abstract
Research suggests that regular participation in programs that provide academic and social activities contribute positively to children’s academic and social development (National Education Association, 2004). However, existing literature on teachers’ and parents’ views on extended learning time is limited. A lot of emphasis has been placed on after-school programs for three primary reasons. First, attendance in after-school programs can provide children with supervision during a time when many might be exposed to and engage in more anti-social and destructive behaviors. Second, after-school programs can provide enriching experiences that broaden children’s perspectives and improve their socialization. Third, after-school programs may …
The Nature Of Teacher Learning In Collaborative Data Teams, Robert Michaud
The Nature Of Teacher Learning In Collaborative Data Teams, Robert Michaud
The Qualitative Report
As data teams have grown in popularity in recent years, they have been increasingly looked to by educational researchers because of the tantalizing prospect of combining teachers’ on the job professional development with increased and effective data use to drive instruction. Data teams have been increasingly implemented within schools by educational leaders attempting to take advantage of what teachers learn from each other in the context of a data team. Many conceptual models of data team function have been proposed, but few empirical studies have examined how teachers learn from collaborating with each other in a data team. This paper …

Andragogy Around The World In K-20 Education: It Is All About Trust, John A. Henschke Edd
IACE Hall of Fame Repository
The author's research in andragogy started in the late 1960s. More serious in-depth attempts were launched in 1997, just after Malcolm S. Knowles died - the author wanted to honor his legacy since he and his work in andragogy were influential in the author's life. The author's research yielded an instrument with the strongest factor being 'teacher trust of learners' - a belief that applies all the way through k-20 Education. This is found to be so in doctoral dissertations, overarching trust behaviors, and threaded through the literature surrounding trust. Trust is found to be congruent between the author's scholarship …

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Building a sustainable system that goes beyond myopic interests and short-term policies is an arduous task for any school leader. In the U.S., our education system has been criticized for being too shallow in curriculum and unsustainable in the long run. In fact, a 2007 report by UNICEF concerning children’s well-being in 22 countries ranked the U.K. and the U.S. at the bottom of the industrialized nations in the survey. Hargreaves (2007) laments that these two countries, in their single-minded pursuit of economic competitiveness and development at all costs, are destroying the planet, while “eating their young.”

Selecting Learning Agility And Leadership Context: An Initial Survey Development Phase, Phillip Emerick
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
In our modern Internet age, the rate of information is steadily increasing accompanied by increasing rates of access. There is a need to process huge volumes of information, quickly and appropriate for specific goals. Educational institutions have the opportunity to lead many in developing the skills for acquiring and applying relevant information under such rapidly changing conditions. Accordingly, educators, administrators and students might benefit from an assessment of their learning agility and leadership style. Discussion for selecting a context set for learning agility precedes discussion for leadership styles. A brief analysis of how the context might be used for a …

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
The current status of educational reform issues related to general education and special education provides the opportunity for the creation of a system that encompasses the goals of both groups in a cohesive manner. Previously, these issues have been addressed separately; however, recent research identifies a progression of change in the focus of ideas in both general education and special education. The first two phases of school reform focused initially on raising standards and then on teacher empowerment and site-based management. The current phase of school reform focuses on the instructional needs of the individual student and rejects the premise …

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
The school’s main core business is teaching and learning. A quality curriculum and effective instruction are key elements to ensure successful teaching and learning in schools (Grigsby et. al. 2010). Thus, various activities and resources established in the schools should be optimized to ensure that teaching and learning are implemented effectively. From the human resource perspective, the main drivers of successful teaching and learning are teachers. Hence, quality teachers who can perform their responsibilities with commitment are prerequisites for successful and excellent education.

Implementing Active Learning Strategies: Tales From Two New Life Science Professors At Research Universities, Nichole Barger, Stuart Grandy
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Past research examining the effects of lectures on student learning suggests that they limit interactions in the classroom, place the responsibility for learning solely with the instructor, and do not provide an environment that compliments a range of learning styles (Silverthorn 1998; Landis et al. 1998; Aboudan 2009). Fortunately, there are many different active learning techniques such as role playing and group activities to more directly engage students and develop their ability to synthesize information, communicate clearly, and adapt to changing knowledge (e.g. Mason 2005; Colley 2008; Cornelius- White 2007). In this paper, we share our experiences implementing active learning …

Teaching in higher education is a very complicated and detailed subject. Good teaching encourages high quality student learning. One of the key principle of effective teaching in higher education is the concern and respect for student learning. Learning style, learning dimensions and academic belief systems as significant factors contributing to academic achievement. The quality of student learning in higher education should be improved and can be improved. How can it best be improved?. The answer is nearer to home :it lies in the connection between students’ learning of particular content and quality of our teaching of that content. Through listening …

Comparing Professional Development Experiences: Viewing The Constructivist Design Conference Through The Lens Of A Professional Learning Community, Jennifer Jones, Karrie Jones, Frank Pickus, Julie Ludwig
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
The first step in this comparison process is to gain a clear understanding of the term “professional learning community.” Ubiquitously used in current educational literature, there is an inherent need to define a professional learning community’s essential components (DuFour 2004). For the purposes of this piece, the concept of ‘professional learning community’ has four defining characteristics. These essential attributes are: (1) Supportive and collaborative conditions (2) Commitment to continuous improvement (3) Results orientation (4) Shared mission, vision, values and goals While definitions that are more elaborate exist, narrowing the essential characteristics that this piece will examine in light of the …

Factual recall is an aspect of memory which deals with the lower order cognitive functioning comprising of knowledge and comprehension. It is the aspect of memory which serves as the foundation for the higher order cognitive functioning which includes application, synthesis and evaluation of knowledge. Definitely, good factual recall ability is needed to enable man acquire knowledge and comprehension which form the basis for ability to apply, evaluate and synthesize knowledge at the higher levels of learning. Interestingly, factual recall skill is not present equally in all human beings. Some people have the capacity to keep things for long in …

The Enriched Environment: Making Multiple Connections, Timothy Clapper
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
One only has to reflect on what it took them to learn and master an activity and a few things may come to mind. Perhaps the activity was learning Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and if so, the process for learning the task, really learning it, involved making many associations with the task. In line with constructivism, the instructor likely began the course by transferring-in what the learner knew about cardiac arrest or mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. As a learner, this may have caused one to reflect on a real or televised event that included chest compressions and rescue breathing. For the teacher who …
