Technical Support For A Micro-Scholarship Programme To Improve Learning: Project Brief, Bikramjit Sen

Sri Aurobindo Society (SAS), one of the largest Indian non-government organisations launched the AuroScholar, a micro-scholarship initiative for students in grades 1 to 12 in India. The scholarships are expected to improve student motivation and encourage positive behavioural patterns which are critical for improving engagement in learning, eventually leading to better outcomes. The Australian Council for Educational Research (India) provided technical support in improving the quality of the 10-minute, daily, curriculum-aligned qualifying quiz for the scholarship. Students are awarded a micro-scholarship of INR 50 upon correctly answering 80% questions in each quiz.

This monograph is about the development of a distinctive style of cross-curricular testing that was developed at the Australian Council for Educational Research in the 1960s and 1970s, and is still in use in some testing programs presently. The impetus for this kind of test development was the decision of the Menzies government to award 10,000 scholarships each year for students to study at Years 11 and 12 through a test called The Commonwealth Secondary Scholarship Examination (CSSE). The “Promise” strategy gained prominence with the announcement of the Kalamazoo Promise program in Michigan in November 2005. The program, known as a universal, place-based scholarship initiative, offers full college tuition to any Kalamazoo Public Schools graduate attending a public college in Michigan. In January 2007, El Dorado, Arkansas announced the El Dorado Promise: a new program that guaranteed that high school graduates from the area can afford college thanks to a $50 million gift from the Murphy Oil Corporation. Engagement in education is a key factor affecting the life chances of all Australians, and for Indigenous Australians in particular. Higher levels of educational attainment improve employment opportunities, are associated with higher income and promote participation in all societal activities. This paper evaluates the quality of available evidence regarding strategies for improving school attendance, with emphasis on Australian research. At the Second East Asia Summit (EAS) meeting held in 2007, the 16 Country Leaders agreed to strengthen regional educational cooperation. Acting on behalf of the EAS, the ASEAN Secretariat has commissioned this project to develop strategies for EAS participants to enhance regional economic competitiveness and strengthen community building in a balanced and sustainable manner through cooperation in education. This study investigates the predictability of social interaction and academic interaction to academic performance. Descriptive analysis, multiple regression analysis, factor analysis and correlation analysis of data provided by 71 students who are Vietnamese Government Scholarship Recipients in graduate programs all over the United States indicate that socio-academic interaction can be used as predictors of students' academic performance but only 15% of the predicted variance is explained by the model.
