Principals And Presidents Of Marshall University: 1837-2013, Lisle G. Brown

Librarian Research

Marshall University has been known by three official names, and thirty-nine individuals have guided it as its forty chief administrative officers—one man served as its principal twice. The institution began as Marshall Academy in 1837, was renamed Marshall College in 1858, and finally became Marshall University in 1961. Of the thirty-nine persons who have shepherded the institution during its one-hundred and seventy-five years, thirty-eight were men and one was a woman. Eight men were principals during the Marshall Academy years, and five were teachers who stepped in to keep the academy functioning during critical years, especially the Civil War. It …

Trait And Situational Variables Affecting Communication Channel Preferences In College Students, Britt Alan Frye

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

As more and more interpersonal communication is being conducted via mediated communication channels, important theoretical questions about the impact of this shift in the use of communication media are raised. This study began the process of exploring the implications of the shift in channels used in interpersonal communication situations by examining several factors that previous research has linked to important aspects of relationship development and maintenance. Specifically, respondents were surveyed about their preferred channel of communication in four types of interpersonal communication situations that reflect varying levels of interpersonal comfort in association with communication locus of control scale (CLOC) scores. …

The Veterans Memorial Field House In Huntington, W.Va.: A History, Stan Bumgardner

Marshall History

“When Ernie Salvatore sat at ring side on fight night. When the crowd noise could be heard all the way across the street in the parking lot of the B & B Super Market. When brightly colored spotlights chased the stars of Holiday on Ice around the rink, and the “Clown Prince” of basketball, Meadowlark Lemon, and the Harlem Globetrotters entertained children of every age. It was a place where families went ice skating, elephants occupied center ring, and the latest fashion in automobiles covered the entire floor in 1957.” Writer Clyde Beal recounted these vivid memories of Huntington’s Veterans …

A Case Study Of First-Year Persistence Of Marshall University Freshmen, Beth Anne Pauley

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

College enrollment is rising but there has not been a corresponding increase in graduation rates. Nationwide, 30% of students who enter college do not return for their sophomore year. This case-study was conducted to determine what factors influenced the first-year persistence of the 2009 Marshall University freshmen cohort. This research used extant data from two MAP-Works surveys and Marshall University’s student academic management system. Data from a cohort of 467 students were analyzed using logistical regression to determine which factors, if any, were statistically significant predictors of persistence. Logistic regression analysis produced statistically significant relationships with 27 pre-entry characteristics, 12 …
