Middle-Class “Chavs” From Working-Class Areas? Habitus, The Attainment Gap, And The Commodification Of Higher Education Among Communication Students In England, Martina Topić, Audra Diers-Lawson, Christian Goodman

Journal of Communication Pedagogy

The purpose of the article is to compare and contrast higher education and research among public relations and journalism students of middle-class and working-class origin. The paper applied Bourdieu’s theory of habitus to analyze prejudices against the working class, explores whether working-class students express an anti-education view, and whether the appreciation of education (and research in particular) is a predominantly middle-class attitude. Focus groups and an online questionnaire were used to obtain views of students at a university in Northern England. Triple coding (open, axial, selective) was used and the data was then analyzed and presented using thematic analysis. Findings …

Do Teachers Know This?, David L. Pike

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

A Communication Arts instructor in a Calgary Technical Institute discovers an opportunity to enlarge his vocation when a student asks him a simple four-word question. Methods of thinking and learning are soon integrated into the communications curriculum, and students, together with their instructors, are invited to develop more and better “TLC” capabilities as they study and practice their chosen disciplines. The article closes by suggesting, given the challenges we’re facing in working, learning, and living well together now, that we ask leaders in our communities and beyond the same question; and to encourage them to expand their leadership roles and …

Approaches To Narrative Instruction For Second Language Learners, Mathew Peters May 2021

Approaches To Narrative Instruction For Second Language Learners, Mathew Peters

MA TESOL Collection

Narratives have reemerged as a dominant form of rhetoric over the last fifty years. This dominant use of narrative discourse has only increased with the rise of social media. Walther Fisher (1987) proposed the narrative paradigm as a unifying theory of human communication. His major claim is that people are inherently storytellers and that people use a narrative rationality and a logic of good reasons to inform their beliefs, values, and actions. This paper utilizes his theories, along with recent findings in neuroscience, to establish an argument for greater inclusion of narratives into second language teaching. Narratives can have a …

Radiology Students' Attitude Toward Learning Communication Skills: Impact Of Clinical Education, Chad Hensley

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The effect communication has on a patient’s healthcare experience has received increased attention in the past few decades. As a result, a larger emphasis on communication training is being incorporated into the curriculum of healthcare education programs. A student’s attitude toward learning communication skills largely determines the adoption of those skills. The radiologic technologist is a vital member of the healthcare team, yet little research has been done on their attitude toward learning communication skills. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the impact clinical education has on the attitude radiology students have toward learning communication skills. A total …

Mediation In The Mediterranean: Italy As A Crucible For Immigration And Intercultural Mediation, Nicole Patteuw Abetti Apr 2018

Mediation In The Mediterranean: Italy As A Crucible For Immigration And Intercultural Mediation, Nicole Patteuw Abetti

MA TESOL Collection

Europe is again in an intense state of migration influx. While some European countries have historical precedence for these types of population shifts, Italy has largely remained outside the modern phenomenon, since it did not experience the economic boom of post WW2 and the subsequent demand for migrant workers, nor did it experience the pull effect of language migrants after the decolonization of Africa. Italy therefore also missed the second surge of migration during the 70’s and 80’s when families of these immigrants began arriving in Europe. What Italy did experience throughout the 20th century, and continues to experience …

Scholarship and Engagement in Education

Supporting education that reflects diversity involves maintaining awareness of one’s personal positionality, creating safe and inclusive learning communities, and using creativity and choice to empower and honor student voice and individual development. When working in educational settings, teachers may involve students in selecting relevant materials, and follow their lead in creating critical dialogue about salient factors of identity.

Edmodo: A Collective Case Study Of English As The Second Language (Esl) Of Latino/Latina Students, Michael Taylor

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The population of English as the Second Language (ESL) students continues to rise throughout the United States especially among those of Latino/Latina heritage. An important aspect to help these students succeed is to build a sense of community through a social constructivist framework. By using and developing 21st century skills through social networking, students can develop a sense of community which could lead to an increase in academic achievement. Utilizing a philosophical assumption of methodology allowed for flexibility and ongoing reflection for the current study, and it was applied in the conceptual framework of social constructivism and sense of community. …
