Expanding Art's Audience, Tony Connors
Expanding Art's Audience, Tony Connors
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
This paper investigates the need for contemporary art museums to expand their audience to fit their role as educational institutions. It is based on research that looks at ways museums have typically been operated in the past and then focuses on newer modes of operation, using the Brooklyn Museum as an example of a museum that educates and reaches a greater audience. Lastly, the paper looks at how particular artists have broken the mold of presenting art in order to interact with and relate to audiences in new ways. This research explains ways that art can be made accessible to …
Integrating Art Education And Literacy Education: A Curriculum For The Secondary Level, Erin Moody-Zoet
Integrating Art Education And Literacy Education: A Curriculum For The Secondary Level, Erin Moody-Zoet
Masters Theses
The purpose of this paper is to examine, through the design of a new curriculum, how the integration of reading and writing literacy into a visual arts curriculum can strengthen literacy skills as well as foster creative thinking at the middle school level. There is a growing demand for the integration of literacy in all core, and non-core curricula. By developing a curriculum that integrates literacy strategies in a visual arts program, as well as touches on the disconnect that I see between individuals and their own creative outlets, a curriculum is established that fosters and engages students in creative …
A Week In Your Shoes: The Impacts Of A Visual Art Program Informed By Clinical Art Therapy With Adolescents In A School Setting, Jessica Bianchi
A Week In Your Shoes: The Impacts Of A Visual Art Program Informed By Clinical Art Therapy With Adolescents In A School Setting, Jessica Bianchi
LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations
This study looked at the impact of a weeklong visual art program informed by clinical art therapy on empathy development with two groups of adolescents in their school setting. The study used a mixed-methods approach to uncover any quantitative change in empathy as well as identify emergent themes seen through qualitative data. Quantitative outcomes indicated no change in empathy development as seen through analysis of a survey measure. Qualitative analysis uncovered several key findings seen through observations, participant interviews, and visual art data; most specifically, participants illustrated beginning levels of empathy by way of increased self-awareness and several cognitive functions …

Labor, Vera Bauluz
Labor, Vera Bauluz
CGU MFA Theses
I make sacred objects from scratch, from ready mades, from industrial materials, and sometimes from trash or recycling. I treat those objects with love and reverence to embed them with essence and soul. I propose conversations with objects exquisitely executed, that question our social order and the machine, easily understood by everybody, although still challenging our understanding of contemporary art.
The placement of the work and the lighting, as fundamental part of the installation, attempts to generate strokes of conscience that enhance human understanding and capabilities beyond a specific discourse.
Humor and sacred coexist in my installation and in my …
Instruction Design Towards The Promotion And Integration Of Movement In The Visual Arts Classroom, Kathryn B. Adams
Instruction Design Towards The Promotion And Integration Of Movement In The Visual Arts Classroom, Kathryn B. Adams
Master's Theses, Dissertations, Graduate Research and Major Papers Overview
My research project focuses on the integration of movement into the visual arts classroom. I explore two questions: “How can the teaching of movement enhance and strengthen learning in Visual Art Education?” and then, “How can I design powerful Visual Art Education learning experiences by incorporating movement”? It is my hope to encourage students in the art classroom to become healthy, life-long learners by engaging the mind and body. This study explores ideas and strategies for integrating the teaching of art with movement for both Elementary and Secondary level students.
K-12 Students See Steam Everyday, Meghan Reilly Michaud
K-12 Students See Steam Everyday, Meghan Reilly Michaud
The STEAM Journal
Today’s students exist in a visual world. A new semiotic language has emerged in the digital age. It consists of an ever-evolving vocabulary of signs and symbols that one can rapidly decipher. Icons represent applications and functions on a plethora of modern devices. Sounds indicate changes and the start and end of activity. The exposure of new audio and visual media are part of everyday communication, now more than ever. The Arts teach our students to better perceive these cues and the information that they deliver.
The Efficacy Of Mathematics Education, Eric Geimer
The Efficacy Of Mathematics Education, Eric Geimer
The STEAM Journal
Evidence supports the notion that mathematics education in the United States is inadequate. There is also evidence that mathematics education deficiencies extend internationally. The worldwide mathematics education deficit appears large enough that improving student performance in this educational problem area could yield great economic benefit. To improve the efficacy of mathematics education, education’s root problems must first be understood. Often supposed educational root problems are considered and contrasted against potential deficiencies of mathematics methodologies and curricula that are based on mainstream educational philosophies. The educational philosophies utilized to form early-grade mathematics methodologies and related curricula are judged to be the …
Using Video Based Instruction To Teach Art To Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Anthony W. Woodruff
Using Video Based Instruction To Teach Art To Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Anthony W. Woodruff
Theses and Dissertations--Art and Visual Studies
Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders often do not respond to common pedagogical strategies and traditional in vivo teaching approaches. From my observations, students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders learn best when material is presented through technology. Based on the information found in the literature review and personal observations from working with students with special needs, when students with Autism Spectrum Disorders receive video based instruction by watching recorded art lessons, they may learn to develop artistic skills and retain more art content knowledge with greater success than through traditional teaching methods. The purpose of this research study is to test …

Engaging Students In Art Beyond The K-12 School Environment, Melanie Ducharme
Engaging Students In Art Beyond The K-12 School Environment, Melanie Ducharme
Master's Theses, Dissertations, Graduate Research and Major Papers Overview
This purpose of this thesis is to investigate a unit of instruction for a mural project with a community organization.
The question I sought to answer through this research was: How can I design a unit of instruction in collaboration with a local organization that will potentially engage students in a community-based work of art while also promoting a sense of community among the students?
Though this thesis research, I learned to collaborate with an organization to create a hypothetical unit of instruction. Also, I wanted to discover how I can create a learning experience that is engaging and personally …
Exploring A "Mor-In-Touch" Approach To Art Teaching, Micaela E. Morin
Exploring A "Mor-In-Touch" Approach To Art Teaching, Micaela E. Morin
Master's Theses, Dissertations, Graduate Research and Major Papers Overview
How can students be more in touch with their artistic process through materials, decisions, social interactions, and environment when creating a work of art about identity for a collaborative mosaic relief installation?
This thesis explored an opportunity for my students to work together to create a collaborative art installation in our high school. This was important to do because the school had just been recently renovated and the new environment felt devoid of any art or personality that once reflected its former students. The important factors behind the installation design were to bring the visual dialogue of community into the …
