Annual Reports

Programs were well received. They were held in the RISD Auditorium but a smaller venue, perhaps the RISD Museum of Art is being considered. The Picture Lending Library, where pictures are rented out is doing well. $71.25 was raised. Because of war shortages only 2 exhibitions were shown at the Army camps.

This project report of March 1, 1941 from the Community Art project discussed the various activities that occurred. A visiting case of art exhibits was shown throughout the state of Rhode Island. A new picture lending library was created where people could rent artwork for a 2 month period.

The circulation of exhibitions and the publication of the Calendar of Art events was discussed. The appointment of a full time man to continue the Project was discussed and this motion passed. Finances between Brown and RISD and the Carnegie Corporation were also discussed.

This is the March 1, 1940 report of the student Picture Lending Library of Brown and RISD. The Lending Library began in the spring of 1933 through a Carnegie Corp. grant and was housed at the art galleries at Brown and RISD. Pictures were purchased from various dealers. The idea was to promote having artwork as a part of one's surroundings and not as a study aid.

The number of exhibitions was listed and a campaign was mentioned to have each town in the state of Rhode Island with permanent space pay $25.00 annually. Various changes were discussed for the Community Art Project in the state of Rhode Island. The though was that small show spaces could be improved in a short time period.

This report of the Community Art Project discussed that the spaces had gone up from 12 from the previous year to 16 for this year. Other things went smoothly with the exception of the week after the hurricane in September 1938. The roads were in bad shape. It was discussed that there was a need for a full time person to continue the work of the Community Art Project.

The Art Caravan report of the Community Art Project was given to the Carnegie Corp. in New York on October 16, 1936. Fred J. Wallace, RISD grad was in charge of the Art Caravan for the summers of 1935 and 1936. William H. Kahler, Brown grad did a large part of the model construction of early RI architecture. J. Wesley Noble, RISD grad, managed the modern landscape painting and its origins exhibition. Attendance was 12, 609 for the summer of 1936 up from 4300 in the summer of 1935.

Discussed were the activities of the Art Caravan, the fourth annual Institute of Art, the Calendar of Art Events, prepared lectures, the Picture Lending Library, exhibitions shown and cooperation with other organizations.

In this Community Art Project report the effective administration of a grant received by the Carnegie Corp. was discussed. The purpose of the grant was to develop Art interests within the community of Providence and Rhode Island and to strengthen the Art Department at Brown University. Many speakers and programs concerning art, architecture and music took place. There were some concerts at the RISD Museum of Art and Sayles Hall that were well attended.
