G96-1296 Gear Up And Throttle Down -- Saving Fuel, Robert Grisso, David P. Shelton, Kenneth Von Bargen Jan 1996

G96-1296 Gear Up And Throttle Down -- Saving Fuel, Robert Grisso, David P. Shelton, Kenneth Von Bargen

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

"Gear Up and Throttle Down" is a fuel-saving practice suitable for light drawbar loads (less than 65 percent of full power) when reduced PTO speed is not a problem.

For the most efficient operation, a tractor's engine should be operated near its rated capacity. However, there are many field operations (such as light tillage, planting, cultivating, and hay raking) that do not require full tractor power. This is especially true when older implements, which were sized for a smaller tractor, are used with higher horsepower tractors. Also, many operations should be performed at a fixed field speed.

For these lighter …

Rp489 Impacting Private Sector Policy For Families, Georgia L. Stevens Jan 1995

Rp489 Impacting Private Sector Policy For Families, Georgia L. Stevens

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Who is caring for families(*) these days? Historically, we've had the notion that families needed to be self-sufficient. But, today, dramatic changes in family structure and family member's employment have shifted this thinking. As family policy educator and researcher Shirley Zimmerman (personal communication, April 26, 1993) states,

"increasingly it is recognized that the well-being of families is dependent on the functioning of other societal institutions, such as government and business. For this reason, government is taking an expanding interest in the role of the private sector, namely business and industry, for ensuring the health and economic security of workers and …

Art, Education, Work, And Leisure: Tangles In The Lifelong Learning Network, Lara M. Lackey

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Although the field of art education has, in recent years, acknowledged the prevalence of non-formal educational sites, our literature is divided on whether this trend poses an opportunity for cooperation and strength or a threat to the status of art as a school subject. This paper consults the literature of critical theory within the domains of art, education, and leisure studies in order to examine the relationship between formal and non-formal art education. First, it considers ways in which tradition conceptualizations of art, education, leisure, and work foster an acceptance of art as experience and knowledge to be gained outside …

G92-1078 Work And Family: Today's Juggling Act, Hrebert G. Lingren

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Working families are under stress as they try to balance demands of job, children and spouse. Strategies are needed to prevent stress overload and burnout.

Over the past 25 years, women's and men's roles have changed dramatically. Today's women are better educated, have better paying jobs and are having fewer children. Women represent 45 percent of the labor force, nearly 80 percent work outside the home and 75 percent of mothers of young children are employed.

As women have entered and stayed in the work force in ever-increasing numbers, the dual-earner family has emerged. Married couple earners comprise more than …

Everyone agrees that time is a valuable resource. Each of us has a limited amount of it to use for work, family and leisure activities. As more demands are placed on us, our decisions on how we use our time become more difficult. Making the most of it becomes a necessity.

This extension circular discusses how to set your objectives and priorities, streamline decision-making processes, recognize scheduling hints and tools and effectively handle interruptions. Juggling the time demands of work and family, while working at a business in the home, requires additional considerations.

Ec46-223 My Kitchen Jan 1946

Ec46-223 My Kitchen

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

I have often dreamed of having a kitchen which would be cheerful, convenient, cleanable, and comfortable. If we should build a new home, and I could create my dream kitchen, it would fit the needs of my family, our living habits, our standards of meal preparation and serving, the equipment we could afford, and the amount of help and company we are likely to have.

After looking at pictures and plans, reading literature, and talking to others, I believe that step-saving, workable kitchens don't just happen. There evidently are some basic principles to follow. Several years' experience can give a …
