The Mentor In You:Expected And Recieved Study Abroad Preparation, Emily Miner, Hannah Meyer

ISU Ethnography of the University Initiative

When you think of studying abroad, visions of exotic locations and wild adventures come to mind. However, have you ever thought about the process before going abroad? This study examines the steps and programs offered to a student before going abroad. The research process involved examining existing literature about the study abroad process and what programs are offered at Illinois State University. Two interviews were conducted with students who have already studied abroad and one interview with a student who is about to study abroad. Further investigation included reviewing blogs and examining the data through narrative analysis. The research findings …

Accidental Agent Of Change: George Ticknor's Study Abroad In 1815 Germany, Leslie Bohon

The William & Mary Educational Review

The historian Herbst (1965) posited that “scholarship . . . like most human endeavors, [is] given [its] distinguishing character by the specific time and place in which [it is] pursued” (p. vii). The distinguishing character of U.S. higher education at the turn of the nineteenth century was transition. Indeed, in the early 1800s, U.S. educators were struggling to determine the future of higher education in the United States, igniting discussions and disagreements concerning everything from the purpose of education, to curriculum and pedagogy, and to student life (Herbst, 1965). Yet, answers did not appear to be forthcoming from within the …

Investigating The Experiences Of Queer International Students, Elizabeth S. Patrick Jul 2014

Investigating The Experiences Of Queer International Students, Elizabeth S. Patrick

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

There is a great deal of academic literature reporting homophobic discrimination against queer students in higher education. However, queer international students, who have potentially experienced different cultural constructions and understandings of sexualities based upon their cross cultural international studies, have received little to no attention in academic literature. This is significant considering the increasing number of international students studying in Canadian universities. In light of this, this research examines the self-described experiences of seven queer international students attending one Canadian university in order to investigate their experiences as queer identifying subjects. Drawing on their voices, it also attempts to examine …

Higher Education Institution Choice Behaviors Of International Students On U.S. College Campuses, Anil Tan

Theses & Dissertations

The economic, social, and personal value of education has been realized as motivating factors for seeking a better education overseas by individuals. In addition, political, economic, and educational conditions of home countries impact individuals’ decisions to study abroad. There were over 4 million tertiary students studying outside their home countries in 2011. Nearly 820,000 of those students were studying in higher education institutions in the United States. Students from China, India, and South Korea comprise nearly 49% of the international students in the United States. The increase in the number of students studying overseas and their valuable contributions develop a …

Why Do Gen Y Students Study Abroad? Individual Growth And The Intent To Study Abroad, Jennifer A. Pope, Carol M. Sanchez, Kevin Lehnert, Alexandra S. Schmid Jan 2014

Why Do Gen Y Students Study Abroad? Individual Growth And The Intent To Study Abroad, Jennifer A. Pope, Carol M. Sanchez, Kevin Lehnert, Alexandra S. Schmid

Peer Reviewed Articles

This paper proposes that Generation Y college students’ desire for individual growth is a critical factor that motivates them to express the intent to study abroad, and that five additional variables -- gender, parents’ educational level, prior international experience, age, and household income -- moderate the direct influence of the desire for individual growth on the intent to study abroad.

Virtually There: Examining A Collaborative Online International Learning Pre-Departure Study Abroad Intervention, Carrie Wojenski

Global Engagement Publications

As more guided study abroad interventions move online and into a collaborative format, it is important to not only examine the influence of students’ social interactions as related to their intercultural development and experiences in the interventions, but also understand which variables influenced the success of an intervention. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that influenced students’ intercultural development and experiences in a collaborative online international learning pre-departure study abroad intervention. To explore these questions I designed a collaborative online international learning intervention for pre-departure study abroad students.

Pre-departure U.S. study abroad students and international students coming …

The Value Of International Experiences For Business Students: Measuring Business Student Attitudes Toward Study Abroad, Sean Heffron, Peter A. Maresco Jan 2014

The Value Of International Experiences For Business Students: Measuring Business Student Attitudes Toward Study Abroad, Sean Heffron, Peter A. Maresco

WCBT Faculty Publications

The value of an international experience—especially for students of business—continues to be an area of focus at colleges and universities. Students across all disciplines within the business curriculum: accounting, economics, finance, management, marketing, or sport management are expected by employers to possess knowledge of, and appreciation for, other cultures. Using as a backdrop two unique study abroad programs that immerse students into an intercultural business experience and have them interacting with—and learning from—the local residents as well, the survey research in this study measures student attitudes before and after they study abroad and it notes the changes that students report …

Race Matters: An Examination Of The Study Abroad Experiences Of African American Undergraduates, Karyn L. Sweeney Jan 2014

Race Matters: An Examination Of The Study Abroad Experiences Of African American Undergraduates, Karyn L. Sweeney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As U.S. colleges and universities face increasing pressures to prepare graduates to succeed in a global environment, African American students continue to be underrepresented in study abroad participation. In-depth interviews and a critical race theory framework were utilized to examine how six African American undergraduates experienced study abroad. Findings were organized around participant backgrounds, motivations, and goals for study abroad; lived experiences abroad, with an emphasis on the effects of race and racism; expectations; and meanings and outcomes ascribed to study abroad by the participants. The study findings offered a counternarrative to deficit-based discussions of African Americans and study abroad …
