Student Athlete Or Student Employee? Considering The Future Implications Of Recent College-Athletics Decisions Regarding Employee Classification, Nathan Schmutz, Joseph Hanks

BYU Education & Law Journal

Nature often provides warning signs of oncoming danger. For example, a generally recognized phenomenon associated with a tidal wave caused by an oceanic earthquake is the major withdrawal of water resembling an extreme low tide. Universities take note, a similar phenomenon might be occurring in relation to college sports. Recent decisions might be signaling a receding of waters before a surge of litigation that results in college athletes being considered employees of the university. This paper considers recent court and administrative decisions that might be indicative of this major shift and discusses possible implications of such a change.

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The focus of this Capstone Project was meant to analyze the possible issues high school student-athletes may face academically as well as mentally while in school. This issue is important to note because there is an increase in students participating in sports and the offered school support should reflect the growing population. An argument that was found was the possible overlook of the mental well-being of the student-athletes if they are academically succeeding or are accomplished athletes. The primary stakeholder's perspectives chosen were current high school student-athletes because they are able to provide insight into the current issues that student-athletes …

A For Academics Or Athletics: A Critical Look At African American Male Student Athletes In Search Of Identity, Tamekia Bush

Dissertations

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore how African American male student athletes developed their athletic and racial identity and how this impacted their academic identity. I conducted two in depth interviews with 6 African American male current or former student athletes who played basketball or football in high school but were not eligible to be a NCAA qualifier for an athletic scholarship. I sought to investigate the point when the student athletes began their career in athletics and when athletics began to impact their academic performance and why it impacted academic performance. I also investigated how the …

Investigating Academic Motivation Among Ncaa Division I Football Players Within Their Competition And Non-Competition Semesters., Ian R. Potter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent data indicates that college student athletes are graduating at higher rates than their non-student athlete peers; however, among student athletes in general, revenue sport student athletes are well below other college sport student athletes in terms of academic performance. One variable that has shown to have a connection with academic performance among college student athletes is academic motivation. An area within academic motivational research that has not been investigated is how a revenue sport student athlete’s time commitment to their sport (competition and non-competition semester) influences their academic motivation. Additionally, the large majority of research assessing academic motivation among …

This interest in sports motivates some student-athletes towards academic accomplishments including completion of a college degree.

This study employed a partially mixed methods approach, which included a survey of community college athletes, focus groups of community college student-athletes, …
