Implementation Of A Student Research Group With Undergraduate Preservice Teachers, Melissa S. Martin, Alison Puliatte, Emily Blankenship Bostedor

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

The purpose of this paper is to describe the implementation of an undergraduate student research group with preservice teachers at a university in the Northeastern United States. Following the guidelines of Shanahan et al. (2015), university faculty provided intensive mentoring, scaffolded support, and instruction related to research evaluation and methodology. Undergraduate students completed literature reviews of a specific topic related to education and conducted their own research studies. This article describes a model of undergraduate research the authors developed for elementary and special education preservice teachers.

E-Mentoring The Online Doctoral Student From The Dissertation Prospectus Through Dissertation Completion, Ronald Black Jan 2017

E-Mentoring The Online Doctoral Student From The Dissertation Prospectus Through Dissertation Completion, Ronald Black

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

Faculty who mentor online doctoral candidates face many of the same challenges and opportunities as those mentoring doctoral candidates in traditional, face-to-face modalities. The main difference is that E-Mentoring is based on interacting in the online space rather than interacting face-to-face, which may present challenges for both the candidate and the mentor. The concept of mentoring, which originated from Greek mythology, defined a close relationship between the mentor and the student. In Ancient India, the word Guru from the Sanskrit language stood to symbolize a caring mentor and expert teacher. Structured E-Mentor programs are formalized programs which provide training, coaching, …

Embedding Information Literacy In Educational Research Graduate Classes, Madalienne F. Peters, Suzanne Roybal Jul 2011

Embedding Information Literacy In Educational Research Graduate Classes, Madalienne F. Peters, Suzanne Roybal

Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Teaching students how to conduct research that helps them develop a scholarly work is often a daunting task. A fortuitous collaboration between faculty members in the School of Education and the academic library led to the development of strategies for teaching graduate students how to conduct quality research. Over the course of four years, faculty worked to include library search tools and strategies into graduate research classes.

Integrating Community Engaged Research Into Existing School Of Education Graduate Research Courses, Madalienne F. Peters, Karey Gauthier May 2009

Integrating Community Engaged Research Into Existing School Of Education Graduate Research Courses, Madalienne F. Peters, Karey Gauthier

Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This article outlines the importance of Community Engaged Research, and how it can be embedded into an existing Master of Science in Education degree program at Dominican University of California. Community Engaged Research rejects the traditional research model, opting instead for a dialogic approach to research. Both the community and the researchers must participate in the analysis process as data is irrelevant without considering the context in which the data was discovered. When evaluating the role of service in education, Community Engaged Research provides a clear connection between educators, students and the community in a service oriented way. An ideal …

Standards, Firewalls, And General Classroom Mayhem: Implementing Student-Centered Technology Projects In The Elementary Classroom, Mark J. Hofer, Kathleen Owings Swan Jan 2006

Standards, Firewalls, And General Classroom Mayhem: Implementing Student-Centered Technology Projects In The Elementary Classroom, Mark J. Hofer, Kathleen Owings Swan

Articles

Educators are simultaneously bombarded with both calls to integrate technology in meaningful ways into their teaching and to promote more student-centered activities which combine both content learning and higher-order thinking. This is no small task given the range of student abilities and interests, the increasing emphasis on state standards and testing, and the persistent challenges regarding reliability and ubiquitous access to the necessary technologies in the classroom. In this study, the authors attempt to work towards a research-based model to connect student-centered technology pedagogy that teachers can effectively replicate in the classroom. They came to this project as educational technologists …

How To Find Students’ Inner Geek, Marc Zimmer Aug 2005

How To Find Students’ Inner Geek, Marc Zimmer

Chemistry Faculty Publications

As a chemistry professor at a liberal-arts college, the author believes it is his job to find the youthful awe in his students and draw it out so that they will be intrigued once again by science and nature, so that they want to learn about equilibria, pH, and redox reactions. He has to go fishing inside their brains, to find, hook, and reel in their scientific spirit. Most of the students he teaches have not yet deeply suppressed their inner science geek. He can hook almost all of them if he uses the lures available to professors everywhere: enthusiasm, …
