Implications Of California State Standards In Relation To Disordered Eating For School Aged Children, Jessica De Mott
Implications Of California State Standards In Relation To Disordered Eating For School Aged Children, Jessica De Mott
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Food is a part of people’s lives, even when it is not acknowledged. It is distinctly tied to various cultures, ethnicities, and religions; with elements of restriction and gluttony abundant. Then, there is the complication of modern nutrition and health education that is taught in American, and more specifically in Californian schools. But, the education received on this issue has failed some students. Many school aged children reported that they experienced disordered eating, and learning content has further exacerbated this issue. This senior capstone research will examine the implications of California State Standards in relation to disordered eating for school …
Intervention Playbook For Homeschool Families, Rebecca Huisman
Intervention Playbook For Homeschool Families, Rebecca Huisman
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
The growing trend of homeschooling has led to the rise of independent charter schools in California by providing families with the flexibility to tailor their children's education while aligning with state standards. This school improvement plan focuses on assisting educators at Blue Ridge Academy, an indepedent charter school in Los Angleles, California, by providing a toolkit of interventions to help homeschooled students achieve grade-level proficiency in language arts and mathematics. The intervention playbook, developed by using evidence-based research and action studies, simplifies interventions in ELA and math for early and upper elementary students. The aim of the playbook is to …
Writing Without Audiences: A Comprehensive Survey Of State-Mandated Standards And Assessments, James E. Warren
Writing Without Audiences: A Comprehensive Survey Of State-Mandated Standards And Assessments, James E. Warren
Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education
Writing studies professionals agree that students must learn to write for specific audiences. Despite this professional consensus, there is reason to believe that this skill is not widely tested in state-mandated writing assessments. In this study, we survey the state content standards for English Language Arts and the state-mandated writing tests for high school students in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. While all states have adopted standards that require students to write for specific audiences, only a small percentage test this skill on state-mandated assessments. We argue that the consequences of this misalignment between standards and assessment …
Examining Instructional Fidelity Of State Standards In Project-Based Learning Units, Megan Correia
Examining Instructional Fidelity Of State Standards In Project-Based Learning Units, Megan Correia
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem investigated in this study was the decline in student achievement since the implementation of project-based learning (PBL) by the third- through sixth-grade teachers at the local elementary school. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to investigate teachers’ perceptions at the study location about their knowledge of PBL and its application in third- through sixth-grade classes. The study was rooted in Jean Piaget’s cognitive learning theory of constructivism. The study location was an urban school district in the Southern United States. Data on teacher perceptions was gathered through structured interviews, conducted via Zoom, with eight elementary teachers …
Map It Out: A School Improvement Plan, Breana Biery
Map It Out: A School Improvement Plan, Breana Biery
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Curriculum mapping allows schools to have coherent alignment of state standards across grade levels. A research site was in need of both vertical and horizontal alignment of standards. A school improvement plan was created using research-based methods. The plan allows teachers to work collaboratively within professional learning communities to unpack state standards to note priority standards, establish “I can” statements, form big ideas, pose essential questions, and create assessments to ultimately create engaging units in all classrooms. Teachers will work together to eliminate over and under coverage of standards.
How Can Play-Based Learning In Primary Grades Be Used To Support Teaching Of State Standards?, Laura Smith
How Can Play-Based Learning In Primary Grades Be Used To Support Teaching Of State Standards?, Laura Smith
Graduate Teacher Education
Abstract
Although data supports the benefits of play and play-based learning as instructional tools for children birth to age eight, many teachers of children in grades kindergarten-second grade succumb to a narrow selection of tools chosen for academic teaching and learning. Lack of common play definitions, the pressure of accountability standards, high stakes testing, lack of training in play theory, and conflicted feelings about how to implement play-based learning all contribute to this. The research focus question for this paper was: How can play-based learning in the primary grades be used to support the teaching of state standards? This document, …
Middle School Teachers’ Perceptions Of Project Based Learning As It Impacts First Year Implementation, Stacey Cunningham Whitaker
Middle School Teachers’ Perceptions Of Project Based Learning As It Impacts First Year Implementation, Stacey Cunningham Whitaker
Theses and Dissertations
Current education expectations require teachers to meet federal and state standards as well as develop 21st century skills like collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving. Preparing students for state testing while also preparing them to be successful in a global society can present an instructional dilemma. Project-based learning has been identified as a possible solution to this problem. Although researchers agree that integrating 21st century skills in daily instruction is necessary, many teachers and administrators have shied away from implementing a project-based learning curriculum (Hmelo-Silver, Duncan, & Chinn, 2007). The identified problem of practice for this present action research study …
The Development And Design Of The Common Core State Standards For Mathematics, Jason Zimba
The Development And Design Of The Common Core State Standards For Mathematics, Jason Zimba
New England Journal of Public Policy
As one of the lead writers of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, I begin by explaining what the standards are, what they are not, and how they were developed. Then I detail some ways in which the standards differ from previous state standards. Finally, I describe some of the developments I have seen in the implementation of the standards and the key developments I would like to see in the future.
First In Reform: The Adoption Of Common Core State Standards In Kentucky, Richard Day
First In Reform: The Adoption Of Common Core State Standards In Kentucky, Richard Day
Kentucky Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning
Kentucky first drew national attention when its Supreme Court declared the entire system of schools to be unconstitutional in Rose v Council for Better Education, 790 S. W. 2d 186 (1989). The Rose case, argued by former Kentucky Governor Bert Combs, launched a third wave of school reform litigation based on both equity and adequacy as expressed in state constitutions (Day 2011, 2-4). On February 11, 2010, in an unprecedented joint meeting, the chairs of the Kentucky Board of Educat ion, the Council on Postsecondary Education, and the Education Professional Standards Board signed a resolution directing their respective agencies to …
Better Social Studies: Increasing Content Knowledge & Reading Simultaneously, Ellen Rae Weaver
Better Social Studies: Increasing Content Knowledge & Reading Simultaneously, Ellen Rae Weaver
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
When considering the impact of the new set of educational standards coming into effect across the nation, commonly known as The Common Core, it becomes necessary to reevaluate the emphases given to the different subject areas being taught. These new standards are heavily steeped in the empowering act of reading in education. I believe that reading, instead of overwhelming content with its different instructional needs, can instead be used to rejuvenate subject areas. Since the content area dubbed social studies is a diverse and greatly varied teaching subject it has a multitude of applications in education.; yet, due to the …

Interpreting And Implementing English Language Arts State Standards/Expectations In Secondary Classrooms, Amanda Stearns-Pfeiffer
Interpreting And Implementing English Language Arts State Standards/Expectations In Secondary Classrooms, Amanda Stearns-Pfeiffer
Dissertations
In my dissertation, I investigate the way in which English Language Arts (ELA) state standards are being interpreted and implemented, and how this implementation process affects the curricular decisions teachers make. This project focuses generally on the standards movement in American education, and more specifically on the ways teachers navigate the standards in their own classrooms.
The goal of this study is to problematize and better understand the end-result of current standards as they are conceived of by the final arbiters and interpreters of those standards – classroom English language arts teachers. Much work has been done in creating standards, …

An Exploratory Case Study Of Upper Elementary And Middle Level Science Instruction Impacting Traditionally Underserved Students, Lucinda Howe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This is an exploratory case study looking at the practices in one Colorado K-8 school that had students performing at or above the 75th percentile on the eighth grade Science Colorado Assessment of Student Progress (CSAP) in 2009. This study attempted to answer the question: What are the instructional choices, classroom environments, interventions, and school practices in place in one K-8 school that is supporting traditionally underserved populations of students in the learning of science? This school appears to be meeting the needs of their traditionally underserved students as evidenced by the percent of students in these populations at this …
Rural And Small Community Educator Responses To State Academic Standards, Carolyn Babione
Rural And Small Community Educator Responses To State Academic Standards, Carolyn Babione
The Rural Educator
Rural and smalltown schoolsare in the midst of revising curriculum to meet state national mandates. This article presents information gained from a two-year grant funded training program for rural teachers focusing on Indian state-mandated curriculum chane. The context in wich teachers teach and their prevailing attitudes and beliefs about students and learning shape how they respond to the state standards in their classrooms. Teachers respond to state standards through a "customized approach" based on personal philosophical orientations to teaching and learning.
The Effect Of Technology Education On Student's State Standardized Test Scores, Maurice Torrez Frazier
The Effect Of Technology Education On Student's State Standardized Test Scores, Maurice Torrez Frazier
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
The intent of this dissertation was to determine if technology education program completers score higher on academic standards assessments than do students who do not enroll in technology education courses. Many states have developed academic standards for public school students to measure the quality of the educational system. States and local school systems adopted these standards and their accompanying tests to establish a level of academic competency for all of their students. One of the goals of technology education courses was to provide practical applications to reinforce the content of the core subject areas. The purpose of this study was …
Fourth-Grade Teachers' Perceptions Of Nebraska's State Standards Process In Elementary Schools, Richard J. Beran Jr.
Fourth-Grade Teachers' Perceptions Of Nebraska's State Standards Process In Elementary Schools, Richard J. Beran Jr.
Student Work
The purpose of this study was to explore fourth-grade teachers' perceptions of Nebraska's state standards process. Specifically, research questions sought to determine fourth-grade teachers' perceptions of the possible effects of state standards on schools, students, teachers, and administrators. The questions also explored any differences between subgroups based on teachers' gender, teachers' years of experience, schools' socio-economic status, school enrollment, and percentage of students that have met the state standards.

Comparative Age-Grade Levels In State Schools Of The Australian States, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
Comparative Age-Grade Levels In State Schools Of The Australian States, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
Information Bulletin
Some years ago, the Australian Council for Educational Research prepared a table of the equivalent grades in the six Australian States. In 1945 and 1946 the R.A.A.F Vocational Guidance Service reprinted the upper section of this table, together with other information regarding post-primary courses and examinations, as "Comparative Educational Levels in the Australian States”. While it is now fairly evident, from the comparison of curricula end results in our curriculum survey, that there are no strictly comparable levels in the content of courses or in the mean ages of children, the R.A.A.F. table has apparently proved useful to head masters …
