Coming Of Age In Neoliberal New York, Jennifer Hope Sugg

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Thirty years of neoliberal policies have left New York a divided city, with ever-rising rates of income inequality and widening social disparity. Structural transformations associated with global capitalism have led to divergent experiences for male and female youth coming of age in the 21st century. Girls are experiencing greater social integration and social mobility whereas, boys are facing social exclusion and limited opportunities. As young men precariously forge new transitions to adulthood, young women are constructed as ideal flexible subjects, benefiting from feminist achievements, and advancing in the new service economy. Yet in reality, girls continue to face gendered base …

Nineteenth Century Rosa Parks? Assessing Elizabeth Jennings' Legacy As A Teacher And Civil Rights Pioneer In Antebellum America, Katherine A. Perrotta, Chara Haeussler Bohan

Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Faculty Publications

Elizabeth Jennings should be recognized as more than a "Rosa Parks" figure in Antebellum New York City history. Both Jennings' and Parks' experiences with segregation on public transportation are similar, but they are not the same. Jennings' ejection from a New York streetcar was not deliberately planned, nor did her removal from the streetcar lead to mass protests or boycotts in New York City or throughout the country. Similarly though, as many African Americans endured violence during the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, Elizabeth Jennings also survived the New York City Draft Riots in 1863. Overall, both …

The Impact Of Curriculum-Based External Examinations On School Priorities And Student Learning, John H. Bishop Oct 2009

The Impact Of Curriculum-Based External Examinations On School Priorities And Student Learning, John H. Bishop

John H Bishop

[Excerpt] The first major prediction of the theory is that an increase in the extrinsic rewards for learning will cause student effort and achievement to increase. The primary extrinsic reward for achievement in high school is a higher probability of completing college. Thus the extrinsic rewards for learning in high school depend on the size of the payoff to college and on how contingent college admissions decisions are on achievement in high school. Time series data suggests that changes in college selectivity and payoff may have contributed to the ups and downs of student achievement during the postwar period. The …

Enhancing Intrinsic Motivation Through The Use Of A Token Economy, Gess Leblanc Sep 2004

Enhancing Intrinsic Motivation Through The Use Of A Token Economy, Gess Leblanc

Essays in Education

This work will examine the link between intrinsic motivation and external rewards by describing the experiences of twenty-seven academically under-performing adolescents who were enrolled in an after school program in a New York City public junior high school that implemented a token economy. The goals of the implemented token economy were to establish an objective measure of student competence, to enhance student perceptions of their autonomy, and to establish links between their classroom-based learning and its practical “real world” applications. It is argued that by achieving these goals, the token economy serves as a tool for enhancing levels of self-efficacy …
