Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation research attempts to distinguish China’s model from that of the traditional North-South relationship, with a focus on how China’s philosophy articulates its foreign policy and the nation’s higher education engagement with African countries. The Role Of The Integration-Responsiveness Framework In An International Branch Campus: A Case Study, Tammy Joy Silver
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Similar to multinational corporations, international branch campuses have the challenge of maintaining legitimacy in different cultural and regulatory environments across national borders. It is common for organizations to modify business practices when expanding operations abroad to respond to local demands and preferences based upon cultural expectations and regulatory requirements.
National culture is comprised of the underlying values, beliefs, and attitudes of a society that drives behavior and expectations (Hofstede, 1980). Differences in national culture determine the amount of local adaptation necessary to conduct business in a foreign country (Kostova & Roth, 2002). International branch campuses must also maintain quality assurance …

The purpose of this study is to develop greater depth of understanding regarding educational leadership development in the five northwestern provinces (Shaanxi, Yinjiang, Gansu, Qinghai, and Ningxia) of the People's Republic of China. The researchers used a mixed method approach of surveys and focused group interviews to gather data regarding the current state of educational leadership training in this under-developed region of China. Findings indicate that most of the educational leaders included in this study have limited teaching experience and relatively low levels of formal education and few, if any, opportunities for training and professional development. However, the participants express …

Hegemonía En La Era Del Conocimiento: Competencia Global En La Educación Superior Y La Investigación Científica, Simon Marginson, Imanol Ordorika, Martin Carnoy
Imanol Ordorika

While important normative work has been produced on various aspects of governance, including trusteeship (Cheit, Holland and Taylor, 1991; Kerr and Gade, 1989), institutional autonomy (Berdahl, 1990), and governance struc- tures (Richardson ct al., 1998) little theoretical inquiry has been devoted to two essential questions of governance: how arc key decisions actually made in the postsecondary sector, and who makes them? In order to advance our unuer- stanuing of higher education governance and policy-making, it is first essential to restore a political theoretical framework to the study of higher cuucation organizations. To that end we begin with an historical review …
