Be Still Method: A Mindful Intervention For Meaning-Making And Whole Person Care, Barbara O'Kelley Hock
Be Still Method: A Mindful Intervention For Meaning-Making And Whole Person Care, Barbara O'Kelley Hock
Mindfulness Studies Theses
Numerous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) in promoting holistic health and well-being. Mindfulness supports whole person care by moving away from an allopathic approach to medicine, which treats only symptoms and disease, and considers the diverse physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of each patient. This paper examines the psychological and spiritual dimensions of whole person care in relationship to suffering and the transformative impact of integrating mindfulness practices to alleviate patient distress. Additionally, a mindfulness-based intervention supporting meaning-making and considering the needs of the whole person—body, mind, and spirit—will be introduced. Responding to the need for …

The Rationale Behind And Impact Of One Hospital’S Provision Of Secondary School Athletic Training Services: A Five-Year Case Study, Caroline E. Faure Edd; Atc
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Sports-related injuries are common and often require physician or hospital care. Since the advent of concussion laws in fifty states, hospitals across the country have come forward to partner with secondary schools in the provision of sports medicine healthcare. The outreach agreements are consistent: Hospitals hire athletic trainers (ATs) and then outsource them to schools. ATs help mitigate risk in sports programs. Onsite at the schools daily, ATs provide immediate evaluation and treatment for injuries that occur and render decisions regarding the appropriateness of an injured athlete’s return to participation. The goal of this case study was to describe …
Locating Uncertainty In Hospital Leader Sensemaking And Sensegiving Of Organizational Change: A Single Case Study, Sara E. Barry
Locating Uncertainty In Hospital Leader Sensemaking And Sensegiving Of Organizational Change: A Single Case Study, Sara E. Barry
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Leaders planning strategic change face significant ambiguity and uncertainty due to the complex, fast-paced, and volatile nature of organizational life. What one leader sees as an opportunity, another may view as a threat depending on their past experiences, their existing mental models, and their perceptions of uncertainty. Sensemaking and sensegiving theories provide a framework for how leaders retrospectively make sense of new and disorienting information through recursive cycles of interpretation, action, and learning, and seek to influence the meaning-making of others towards a shared vision of the strategic change. Despite decades of research using these theories, studies have yet to …

It is estimated that 65% of the population are visual learners. With that in mind, a team of cardiac nurses in a large academic tertiary hospital developed a quality improvement project to hopefully improve patient engagement as well the patients’ perception that the nurses explained things in a manner that they could understand.
Baseline patient survey scores for the question, “Nurses Explained Things In A Way That I Understand”, were under the 75thpercentile for a period of 9 months. A root cause analysis was conducted and it demonstrated numerous reasons for this score.
Several countermeasures were instituted to …
Journey Of The State Budget, Karina Carmichael
Journey Of The State Budget, Karina Carmichael
Masters Theses/Capstone Projects
In attempts to make government fair and equitable, the process of any bill but especially the budget bill can be extremely convoluted and difficult to follow. I was able to learn how to navigate the system and understand the processes by which things happen at the statehouse.
The statehouse is filled with representatives of countless interest groups all fighting for their opinion of how things should be done. As demonstrated by this budget cycle, government can be a push and pull directed by politics, personal opinions, and countless other factors, which may result in nothing getting done.

Creating Bridges Between Health Care Professionals: Interprofessional Collaboration Between Respiratory Therapy And Speech-Language Pathology And Its Importance For Patient Outcomes, Nafiah Khan
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
In a changing health care industry, it is imperative that different healthcare professionals collaborate to address the state of the patient. Respiratory therapists (RTs) and speech-language pathologists {SLPs) frequently work with the same general patient population in the healthcare setting; however, while RTs typically provide emergency interventions, SLPs work with the patient in the rehabilitative domain. Each profession has a unique understanding of the patient and may encounter an overlap in responsibilities for performing a particular task, including management of tracheostomy tubes and prevention of aspiration pneumonias. This study investigated SLPs' and RTs' perspectives on their interprofessional collaboration. The findings …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
More than 40% of nurses reported experiencing significant burnout. Burnout is characterized by disengagement, cynicism, negative views of personal accomplishment and ability, and emotional exhaustion. The healthcare providers that experience burnout can possibly expect a decrease in ability to recognize/report errors, increase of negative feelings toward the patient, and decrease levels of patient satisfaction (Ernest, 2014). One of the ways Schub (2015) suggested to regulate burnout for employees was to provide psychosocial support to colleagues to reduce stress. This study is one of the first attempts to bridge the gap between the unknown correlation between qualitative and quantitative benefits of …

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health problem and efforts are needed to improve the care of individuals affected by the disease. A recent strategy for improving care within the healthcare system is patient engagement. Nurses and other health care clinicians can apply patient engagement into their clinical practice to improve the care they provide to their patients. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to increase the knowledge and awareness of patient engagement among clinicians who work with CKD patients. This quality improvement project used Lewin's force field analysis to analyze driving and restraining forces to help develop …

Implementation Of Educational Program For Nurses To Improve Knowledge And Use Of Discharge Planning Best Practices, Eric C. Snyder
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Abstract
Problem Statement: The frequency and severity of hospital post-discharge events has become a national problem. The increase in readmission rates post-discharge has a negative impact on the patients overall morbidity and increases healthcare costs (Jack, 2012). Non-comprehensive discharge planning contributes to post-discharge events such as less than 30-day readmissions (Jack, 2012). Best practices for discharge planning should be utilized.
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to evaluate the impact of Project Re-engineering Discharge (RED) education to increase nurses' knowledge and use of best practices on discharge planning. An adapted Project RED educational intervention, using Knowles' adult learning …

Food and beverage packaging has been found to contribute to malnutrition amongst the older hospital patient. This paper examines the interaction of the older user and regular hospital food and beverage packaging and the role of strength and dexterity in relation to pack opening within a hospital context. Findings demonstrate that the most difficult packs to open require higher levels of dexterity than strength. Manufacturers need to incorporate both universal and transgenerational design principles to maximise pack 'openability' for the older user.

Shift Report And Sbar: Strategies For Clinical Postconference., Fatima Ascano-Martin
Shift Report And Sbar: Strategies For Clinical Postconference., Fatima Ascano-Martin
Nursing | Faculty Scholarship
Conducting an effective postconference continues to be challenging because of low levels of student participation. Many students are exhausted at the end of the clinical day, which lessens their participation in postconference. In my experience, students often omit important information, such as patients’ age, sex, race, and other medical problems, during initial reports. Some have trouble providing patients’ information in an organized manner as well. The SBAR (situation-background-assessment-recommendation) communication tool can be used as a strategy to conduct clinical postconference.

The key for family members is finding a level of commitment and emotional bond that works for everyone. Each of us has different needs in this regard, and often, some compromises need to be worked out. For what it's worth, I vote for a commitment to family over work and making this commitment long before it's too late. An ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure when it comes to family dynamics.

This guide discusses basic Medicare benefits on private health insurance, commonly called Medigap insurance, available to supplement Medicare.
Medicare
What are the two parts of Medicare?
Medicare Part A -- Hospital Benefits. This pays for your care while you are in the hospital, and for related health services after you leave the hospital, including necessary care in a Medicare approved nursing home.
Medicare Part B -- Medical Insurance. This helps pay doctor bills and hospital out-patient expenses.
