This qualitative study aims to understand further the lived experiences of high school mathematics teachers who underwent a sudden transformation into emergency remote teaching due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The study used a qualitative approach, specifically an interpretative phenomenological analysis. Emergency remote teaching has been a new phenomenon that has presented itself worldwide.

This research study sought to explore high school students’ perceptions and experiences with academic stress related to advanced/honors courses. The participants were 115 advanced/honors students in a private Christian high school in New Jersey, who responded to an anonymous survey about their perceived stressors and the impact of academic-related stress on their lives. In the second phase of the study, eight students participated in interviews in which they responded to questions related to the causes and impact of academic stress on their overall physical and social-emotional well-being. This report analyzes key factors concerning West Virginia’s rank as last in the nation with residents that have obtained a four-year bachelor’s degree or higher. This quantitative study will examine political, economic, and sociological components at the state and county level using data collected primarily from various government and state institutions. An emphasis is placed on three main factors: poverty, parental education levels, and low socio-economic status (SES) high schools. There has been much research in the past two decades about the dropout problem in America. Dropout rates have become a focal point for all public schools in the nation largely due to components of the No Child Left Behind Act and the Dropout Prevention Act that associate monetary rewards to schools that raise the graduation completion rates to 90%. The dropout rates for the United States rank the educational system 17th for graduation completion rates among developed countries. Mississippi has repeatedly earned the title of low-ranking among all states in the nation.

Using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression analysis, this study attempts to capture variation in dropout rates across Virginia counties and cities. With the respective dropout rates as the dependent variable, seven independent variables are used accordingly in order to provide as much explanatory power as possible. At the 10 percent significance level, four of seven variables are statistically significant with an adjusted R2 of .374. Important policy implications can be derived from the model and its statistically significant variables. High school education is currently based upon technicist pedagogy, transforming education into mere technical training for the workforce. The regimen of testing in schools standardizes experiences and fails to provide a complete view of what students know and are able to do. Motivating The Reluctant Teen Reader To Use The High School Library, Mary Ellen Vartheuer

Twenty reluctant teen readers were surveyed to determine their library needs and interests. Interviews with twelve high school librarians yielded suggestions for motivating high school students to read. Input from these two sources was used in developing a library program consisting of motivational activities, designed to encourage young adults to use their high school library and to read more. The resulting library program and a list of library materials ordered to meet the needs of these specific students are included.

An implementation handbook for principals who wish to begin an advisory program at the secondary level was developed. Thirtynine principals from middle schools and high schools in Washington State were surveyed concerning the need for advisement programs at the secondary level. Questions concerning need, scheduling, evaluation, in-service, and program administration were asked in the survey. The information from the survey, as well as information contained in the literature, was used in the development of the implementation handbook.

The Use Of Children's Literature In Improving The Secondary Remedial Reader's Attitude Toward And Fluency In Reading, Jane Watson

A six week course in children's literature was taught to ten alternative tenth through twelfth grade students. The purposes were to determine if the secondary student's attitude toward and fluency in reading were improved by working in easy and pleasurable material. The Estes Attitude Scale and an informal reading inventory were administered to the students at the start and end of the course. No statistically significant difference was found in the attitude scale, but reading fluency increased significantly.
