Experimental Evidence On Consumption, Saving, And Family Formation Responses To Student Debt Forgiveness, Jason Jabarri, Stephen Roll, Mathieu Despard, Leah Hamilton
Experimental Evidence On Consumption, Saving, And Family Formation Responses To Student Debt Forgiveness, Jason Jabarri, Stephen Roll, Mathieu Despard, Leah Hamilton
Social Policy Institute Research
As policy-makers grapple with whether or not to forgive student debt, for who, and how much, it is important to explore how student debt forgiveness would relate to intended household decisions and behaviors. We conducted a survey experiment that asked participants with student debt to imagine a scenario in which the federal government forgave a certain amount of student debt. We then had these participants report on how this would affect their decisions and behaviors. 1,053 participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions that offered $5,000, $10,000, $20,000, and complete debt forgiveness. Our results indicate that student debt …

The Role And Significance Of The Act In Teaching Semiconductor Physics In Higher And Secondary Special Educational Institutions, Ulugbek Kadyrovich Valiev
Scientific reports of Bukhara State University
Abstract. It can be shown that the following qualitative changes in the psyche fully reflect the potential of the student and students: this is an increase in self-awareness; Improvement of self-management processes, growth of intellectual abilities (mental shift, in-depth analysis of the material, identification of patterns, search for broad analogies). The process of teaching students should also be considered from the point of view of the extent to which this education is provided with elements of preparation for the independent acquisition of knowledge. At the same time, self-study is considered a key component of education. Independent reading means the formation …

Assessment Of Students’ Levels Of Studying Physics, Fozil Irmatov
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
This article explores the specifics of teaching physics in nonphysical specializations. In the areas of non-physical specialization of pedagogical higher education institutions, it is emphasized that the physics program should be radically different from the curriculum of physics, which is a specialized subject. Many other modern educational technologies are based on the teaching of physics for students of non-physical specialties, the organization of the educational process. The main focus in the teaching of physics to students of non-physical specialties is the content of theoretical materials necessary for the formation of scientific thinking among students, the creation of opportunities for independent …

Severity Of Coercive Sexual Harassment In Professor–Student Interaction And Peer Bystander Responses, Donna M. L. Heretick, Inna Learn
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
The risk for female students in academia of sexual harassment by male faculty and staff remains a national crisis. This study examined effects of severity of coercive sexual harassment (CSH) by a male professor of a female student on peer bystander intervention responses. A total of 180 undergraduate and graduate college students who volunteered for an online survey were randomly assigned to one of three vignette conditions that varied severity of CSH. Following Bowes-Sperry’s ethical model of bystander behaviors, it was predicted that severity of CSH would affect cognitive appraisals and emotional reactions, which would further predict intentions for intervention …

Background and Context: Subgoal labeled worked examples are effective for teaching computing concepts, but the research to date has been reported in a piecemeal fashion. This paper aggregates data from three studies, including data that has not been previously reported upon, to examine more holistically the effect of subgoal labeled worked examples across three student populations and across different instructional designs.
Objective: By aggregating the data, we provide more statistical and explanatory power for somewhat surprising yet replicable results. We discuss which results generalize across populations, focusing on a stable effect size to be expected when using subgoal labels in …

Guidelines To Avoid Typical Difficulties According To The Rubric For Experimental Design (Red), Annwesa Dasgupta, Nancy Pelaez
PIBERG Publications
Experimental design is an important component of undergraduate biology education as it generates knowledge of biology. Despite its importance, there is limited information about what students actually learn from designing experiments. Dasgupta et al (2014) reported on the development and validation of a Rubric for Experimental Design (RED), informed by a literature review and empirical analysis of thousands of undergraduate biology students’ responses to three published assessments. The RED is a useful probe for five major areas of experimental design abilities: the variable properties of an experimental subject; the manipulated variables; measurement of outcomes; accounting for variability; and the scope …
Effects Of A Short-Duration Online Simulation On Global Empathy, Chad Raymond, Sally Gomaa
Effects Of A Short-Duration Online Simulation On Global Empathy, Chad Raymond, Sally Gomaa
Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers
In an investigation of whether a particular instructional method is associated with greater global empathy among students, undergraduates were exposed to information about Haiti through lecture, news video, or an online game that simulated life in Haiti. Our hypothesis was that students would exhibit greater global empathy after playing the interactive online simulation than they would after hearing the lecture or watching the videos. Average scores for survey questions varied according to the instructional method, as did students behavioral responses during the experiment, but the variations were not statistically significant. A larger sample, a longer duration experiment, or the exclusion …

Methods and analysis A Geographic Information System was used to identify 7272 participants in the 45 and Up Study baseline data (2006-2008) living within 5 km of the Western Sydney Parklands and some of the features that have been constructed since 2009, such as public access points, advertising billboards, …
Artistic Drawing As A Mnemonic Device, Leslie Michelle Baker Christensen
Artistic Drawing As A Mnemonic Device, Leslie Michelle Baker Christensen
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Despite art-based learning being widely used, existing data are primarily qualitative, and most research has not isolated particular variables such as memory for empirical study. The few experiments that have been conducted demonstrated that drawing improves free recall of unpaired words, and retention improves after lessons integrated with drawing, drama, and narrative exercises. To help fill the gap in the current literature, the present study compared the effectiveness of encoding and the rate of memory decay between a drawing mnemonic and note taking on a paired associates task. Using a within-subjects experimental design, participants were presented with word pairs and …

Understanding Leadership: An Experimental-Experiential Model, George T. Hole Ph.D
Understanding Leadership: An Experimental-Experiential Model, George T. Hole Ph.D
Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education
Books about leadership are dangerous to readers who fantasize about being leaders or apply leadership ideas as if they were proven formulas. As an antidote, I offer an experimental framework in which any leadership-management model can be tested to gain experiential understanding of the model. As a result one can gain reality-based insights about leadership and oneself. The experiment is described; resistances to engaging it are considered; and examples from a leadership group implementing Covey’s “Seven Principles are summarized. In the course of discussing individual’s experiments objections were voiced against this Socratic approach to understanding leadership. Finally, I sketch a …
