Building On Strengths: Empowering Struggling High School Readers Using Key Strategies, Jennifer Druggan Apr 2023

Building On Strengths: Empowering Struggling High School Readers Using Key Strategies, Jennifer Druggan

Masters Theses/Capstone Projects

The curriculum presented is for struggling high school readers so that they can use mastery experiences with two high yield reading strategies – self-questioning and summarizing – to improve their reading comprehension, which will build self-efficacy and help them to develop a growth mindset. The question that drove this research is what is the best way to meet the academic needs of a diverse student population in a remedial reading class in a way that helps them to build their literacy toolbox and develop a respect for and maybe even a love of lifelong learning? The curriculum is built upon …

Using The Campus Environment As A Classroom, Jesse Minor Jan 2022

Using The Campus Environment As A Classroom, Jesse Minor

Faculty Scholarship

University campuses are multi-purpose spaces, with public institution campuses typically hosting a suite of functions serving local communities, including access to libraries and scholarship, adult learning programs, and episodic events such as public health campaigns and tax preparation support. University campuses also provide excellent spaces for activities that enhance and support their educational mission, including open space that can be used for course-based research, inquiry-led projects, methods training in the social and natural sciences, and artistic work. Here, I explain how I have used the UMaine Farmington campus to teach inquiry-based environmental science while providing campus-based service-learning to the community …

Using Geospatial Analysis For High School Environmental Science Education: A Case Study Of The Jane Goodall Institute's Community-Centered Conservation Approach, Madison G. Vorva Jan 2017

Using Geospatial Analysis For High School Environmental Science Education: A Case Study Of The Jane Goodall Institute's Community-Centered Conservation Approach, Madison G. Vorva

Pomona Senior Theses

Given my experiences as a young conservation advocate, I saw a need to teach students the importance of interconnectedness, cultural awareness and systems-thinking skills through a spatial lens. I believe these skills are required for holistic, equitable and sustainable conservation decision-making in local and international contexts. This thesis uses geospatial tools to teach conservation ecology vocabulary and concepts from high school environmental science curriculum in two online resources. The purpose of my lesson plan is to show students how conservationists address complex conservation and land-use challenges using the Jane Goodall Institute’s community-centered conservation approach as a case-study. My hope is …

Common Core 4th Grade Environmental Science Lesson Plans For California Teachers, Gillian Schoenfeld Dec 2013

Common Core 4th Grade Environmental Science Lesson Plans For California Teachers, Gillian Schoenfeld

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

This project and its analyses were conducted to assist California fourth grade elementary school teachers in adjusting to teaching Common Core standards and science curriculum in their classrooms. The project included the creation of lesson plans, which could be utilized throughout the state of California.

As the Common Core standards, California’s Next Generation Science Standards for K- 12, were just proposed in June of 2013, these lesson plans would help teachers update their lessons and provide them materials and concepts of how to do so. These lessons provide higher-order thinking for students, which is the whole concept of the new …
