Felitti et al., (1985; 1998) developed Adverse Childhood Experiences test (ACEs), after researching adults suffering from obesity and addictive overeating. Positive correlations were linked with traumatic childhood experiences, such as severe physical, sexual and mental abuse with those participants struggling with obesity. ACEs is widely accepted in the field of psychology, proving individuals with higher ACEs scores indicate higher probability for mental illness and high risk deviant like substance abuse and felony crime. Identifying students with high ACEs before entering grade school may give educators and institutions the ability positively alter character and behavior outcomes of these victimized children. Scholars Showcase 2018: Innovations in Leadership and Learning
Higher education is undergoing great changes that require universities to adapt quickly, and making these changes can be difficult. One discipline that can aid in executing change is project management, which has developed a set of clear processes and strategies for completing initiatives quickly and effectively. Several authors have identified project management competencies as key in the practice of instructional design. However, in our experience it can be difficult to operationalize project management, particularly in instructional design projects that are large in scope and require a quick turnaround. In this case study, we describe our response to an immediate need …

Scholars Showcase 2018: Innovations in Leadership and Learning
Cognitive appraisal and stress research has been applied to training stressors, creative arts, pregnancy, psychotherapy, academic, and sleep quality (Erschens et al.,2018; Martin, et al., 2018; Gonzalex-Ochoa, 2018; Wersebe et al., 2018; You-wei et al., 2018). The purpose of this investigation was to study the effects of stress and stressors experienced by first semester BSN undergraduate students. The Brief College Student Hassle Scale (BCSHC) measured stressors (Ward & Hay, 2015). Participants rated their school and personal stresss levels, and the area most stressful.

Scholars Showcase 2018: Innovations in Leadership and Learning
High profile police shootings around the country have caused states and communities to examine how to improve the quality of policing. For example, reports from expert panels convened by Ohio’s Governor and the Ohio Attorney General both recommended expanding law enforcement training requirements as a way to enhance the quality of policing. However, the ability to improve policing through better in-service faces two key obstacles: - Lack of resources: Most police departments do not have the personnel or financial resources to provide regular, high quality training . Eighty-seven percent of police departments have 25 or fewer officers, which means they …

Winding Up For Improved Learning In A Doctoral Research Core Course: Integrating A Spiral Approach With Scaffolding, Yuerong Sweetland, Niccole Hyatt, Constance Wanstreet, Xiaopeng Ni
Scholars Showcase 2018: Innovations in Leadership and Learning
In a spiral curriculum based on cognitive theory by Jerome Bruner (1960), learners have multiple opportunities to revisit a concept or theme throughout an academic term, accompanied each time with increasing levels of complexity (Johnston, 2012). The spiral curriculum has been shown to produce positive outcomes for student learning, especially when combined with other learning approaches and for subject areas on skill development (Johnston, 2012). This proposal will illustrate how a spiral curriculum, enhanced with multiple scaffolding strategies, help students learn and succeed in a doctoral research core course: MTHD 805 (formerly known as GRAD 805).

Assessing College Students’ Foundational Skills: Communication And Critical Thinking, Yuerong Sweetland, Michael Klingler
Scholars Showcase 2018: Innovations in Leadership and Learning
Communication and critical thinking are foundational skills for college students, which have been strongly emphasized by employers, along with other skills (Hart Research Associates, 2015). Foundational skills are often reflected in general education outcomes, which are not only taught in General Education courses but also reinforced and assessed in major area courses. Assessment of communication and critical thinking skills are conducted in both major area courses and general education courses. This poster presents findings on student performances through work products created in senior level major area courses. Performances are also compared between F2F and online sections

"The seven-level Researcher Skill Development framework extends the RSD's original 5 levels of student autonomy to include the degree of autonomy required for a successful research career. It therefore addresses not only students, but also early, middle and late career researchers. This involves the extension of the same facets of inquiry that appear in the original RSD framework to include two higher levels: 6 and 7." -- https://www.adelaide.edu.au/rsd/framework/rsd7/

"Research Skill Development (RSD) is about making explicit and coherent in regular university coursework the incremental attainment of research skills in a specific discipline. In the RSD, there are six facets of the research process, identified from the literature and modified according to Bloom’s taxonomy and our experiences of using the framework in the disciplines. The meaning of ‘research’ in this context is: students actively finding information new to themselves. Underlying this notion is the ‘degree of knowness’ of knowledge: whether research involves …
