Key elements for creating and maintaining a successful program include; collaboration efforts, communication with stakeholders, community performances, highlighting the integration …

The Essentials For Leaders To Motivate Volunteers And Workers, Angelique Burris Jan 2023

The Essentials For Leaders To Motivate Volunteers And Workers, Angelique Burris

Doctor of Education Dissertations

Most organizations were created because there was a need for a service, product, or mission that would assist others in need. When considering what compels volunteers and workers to be consistent in organizations, motivation is imperative. The behavior of leadership, especially the ability to influence, has affected the volunteers and workers of the company in a positive or negative way. Leaders have played a chief role in drawing and retaining workers and volunteers. The purpose of this study was to show that our motivations are already inside of us, and this was key for leaders to realize the importance of …

School Library Advocacy: Enhancing Opportunities For All Learners, Elizabeth A. Burns Jan 2023

School Library Advocacy: Enhancing Opportunities For All Learners, Elizabeth A. Burns

STEMPS Faculty Publications

There is a lack of consistency in how school librarians understand and engage in advocacy for their programs and the profession (Burns, 2015; Lance & Kachel, 2018). It is important that school librarians demonstrate the positive impact they contribute to improving instruction for student learners and advancing access so that all learners have equal opportunities. The school library and school librarian should be available to each student (Kachel, 2021). The School Library Manifesto (2021) includes language to support a strong school library with a qualified school librarian. Advocacy goals can be highlighted throughout this critical set of school library guidelines. …

A Mentoring Program To Strengthen Teacher Efficacy: A School Improvement Plan, Sarah Devries Apr 2022

A Mentoring Program To Strengthen Teacher Efficacy: A School Improvement Plan, Sarah Devries

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Research findings show that mentoring programs have lacked consistency and accountability in schools, leaving new teachers behind and unprepared for their first years of teaching. Past studies have also documented beginning teachers' practices, wellbeing, and retention; mentoring programs; school leadership and support; and pre-service and induction programs. With research findings in mind, a school improvement plan was created to revise an existing mentoring program toward greater teacher efficacy. This plan improved a current mentoring program to create a successful induction process for new teachers, along with more consistency and accountability for mentors.

Meeting Students Where They Are: Implementing Canvas For Successful Student Outreach, Matthew S. Helmandollar Aug 2020

Meeting Students Where They Are: Implementing Canvas For Successful Student Outreach, Matthew S. Helmandollar

Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges

As a success coach, it can be challenging in identifying and referring students to the resources that can aid, and that can assist with each student’s success during their first year. It is vital to use modern technological resources that are available at no additional cost to institutions, and which students are currently using, to aid in consistency within the field of academic advising and coaching as it pertains to a student’s first year. It engages students to reach out to faculty mentors to provide a “holistic” approach to the student’s success on the campus and meets students where they …

Prospective Teachers’ Attention To Realism And Consistency With Negative Integers, Addition, And Temperature, Nicole Enzinger, Jennifer Tobias, Dana Olanoff

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Writing and evaluating contextual problems is an important task in the work of teaching, and thus is part of the knowledge that prospective teachers must develop. In dealing with word problems posed both by children and themselves, prospective teachers will need to attend to the realism of the context and the consistency between the operation and context with integer operations. This study describes an examination of the ways in which 100 prospective teachers responded to a child’s temperature story for an integer addition number sentence (i.e., 9 þ 􀀁 6 ¼ ☐). The child’s story, which was an actual story …

Applying And Interpreting Mixture Distribution Latent State-Trait Models, Kaylee Litson, Carly Thornhill, Christian Geiser, G. Leonard Burns, Mateu Servera Feb 2019

Applying And Interpreting Mixture Distribution Latent State-Trait Models, Kaylee Litson, Carly Thornhill, Christian Geiser, G. Leonard Burns, Mateu Servera

Psychology Faculty Publications

Latent state-trait (LST) models are commonly applied to determine the extent to which observed variables reflect trait-like versus state-like constructs. Mixture distribution LST (M-LST) models relax the assumption of population homogeneity made in traditional LST models, allowing researchers to identify subpopulations (latent classes) with differing trait- and state-like attributes. Applications of M-LST models are scarce, presumably because of the analysis complexity. We present a step-by-step tutorial for evaluating M-LST models based on an application to mother, father, and teacher reports of children’s inattention (n = 811). In the application, we found three latent classes for mother and father reports …

An Analysis Of Grit Scores On First-Year Undergraduate Students' Persistence At A Large Private University, Nina Shenkle Aug 2018

An Analysis Of Grit Scores On First-Year Undergraduate Students' Persistence At A Large Private University, Nina Shenkle

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Student persistence in higher education has become an increasingly high priority as institutions seek to improve undergraduate completion rates. Traditionally, cognitive abilities such as aptitude and intelligence have been used to measure and predict whether a student will be successful in college. However, there is evidence that noncognitive abilities such as determination or effort are as important and as indicative of success as cognitive abilities. This nonexperimental, causal-comparative study utilized a multivariate analysis of variance to analyze archival data of 832 undergraduate students from a large private university to determine the differences between the overall grit score, perseverance of effort …

Incorporating Learning Analytics Into Basic Course Administration: How To Embrace The Opportunity To Identify Inconsistencies And Inform Responses, Lindsey B. Anderson, Elizabeth E. Gardner, Andrew D. Wolvin, Rowie Kirby-Straker4, M. Adil Yalcin, Benjamin B. Bederson

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

Consistency is imperative to the success of a multi-section basic course. However, establishing consistent practices is a difficult task, especially when coupled with maintaining instructor autonomy. Learning analytics tools, designed to improve learning and teaching by collecting and analyzing pertinent information through interactive databases, can be used by basic course administrators to improve consistency. Using a reflective case study methodology we share our experience incorporating a learning analytics platform into our basic course. In doing so, we highlight the role this technology can play in terms of identifying areas of inconsistency as well as informing ways to improve overall course …

Consistency Of Supervisor And Peer Ratings Of Assessment Interviews Conducted By Psychology Trainees, Craig J. Gonsalvez, Frank P. Deane, Peter Caputi

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Observation of counsellor skills through a one-way mirror, video or audio recording followed by supervisors and peers feedback is common in counsellor training. The nature and extent of agreement between supervisor-peer dyads is unclear. Using a standard scale, supervisors and peers rated 32 interviews by psychology trainees observed through a one-way mirror. Results indicated that peers and supervisors used similar dimensions to cluster the various competencies. Peers rated counsellor performance more positively for general counselling skills but not for specialised techniques. Analyses revealed good supervisor-peer agreement for some items and poor agreement on others, with some differences being unacceptably large. …

A Journey, Not A Destination, James L. Phelps Sep 2011

A Journey, Not A Destination, James L. Phelps

Educational Considerations

Closing Essay: Much of the motivation and ideas for the articles in this special issue originated with my dear friend, Maris Abolins, Professor Emeritus of Physics at Michigan State University. We started as neighbors and, as our kids grew up together, we socialized frequently. He is responsible for my interest in physics. I would read a physics book, which would become the subject of our next dinner conversation (while our wives talked about other, more social topics). Instead of a compilation of facts, physics became a way of thinking about problem solving. The “unified field” theory was the start of …

The Development Of Jaw Motion For Mastication, Erin M. Wilson, Jordan R. Green Jan 2009

The Development Of Jaw Motion For Mastication, Erin M. Wilson, Jordan R. Green

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

The developmental course of early chewing has rarely been studied, although such knowledge is essential for understanding childhood feeding and swallowing disorders. The goal of this investigation was to quantitatively describe age- and consistency-related changes in jaw kinematics during early chewing development. An optical-motion tracking system was used to record jaw movements during chewing in 3-dimensions in 11 typically-developing participants longitudinally from 9–30 months of age. Age related changes in jaw movement were described for both puree and regular consistencies. The findings demonstrated that the development of rotary jaw motion, jaw motion speed, and management of consistency upgrades are protracted …

Consistency In Discipline, Pat Steffens, Kathy Bosch Jan 2003

Consistency In Discipline, Pat Steffens, Kathy Bosch

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Consistency in dealing with children’s behavior is recommended if you want to be an effective parent. Although no parent can expect to be perfectly consistent, some level of consistency is needed for children to learn the lessons of social life and feel self-assured. Children learn appropriate behavior easier when learning conditions remain constant. Parents should consider at least four aspects of consistent discipline.
