In this paper we report our study on the design and implementation of a visual analytics tool, Competency Analytics System (CAS), which provides feedback to instructors on both the cohort and individual student’s competency acquisition rate, as well as provide personalized dashboard to each student on his or her competency acquisition for a specific course. We present the key functionalities of CAS and describe a case study on the implementation of CAS in a first-year programming course.
