Classroom Interventions: What We Can Learn From Speeding, Hank Bohanon
Classroom Interventions: What We Can Learn From Speeding, Hank Bohanon
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
Most educators want their students to be successful. When problem behaviors arise in the classroom, unfortunately, they may revert to familiar strategies. For example, a teacher may yell at their students, or particular students, to gain control of the classroom. Sometimes teachers may return to ineffective strategies because they are not aware of what else to do. Or they might think that being “positive” is somehow “babying” their students. Yet, these teachers feel frustrated when they see their students struggling to be successful. Just like aspirin will not cure every headache, no one intervention can solve every issue. However, some …

Using Wikipedia In Israel Studies Courses, Shira Klein
History Faculty Articles and Research
Instructors of Israeli history or literature, like professors in other areas, complain about students’ use of Wikipedia—and with good reason. Unlike peer-reviewed scholarship, many Wikipedia articles contain information that is both incomplete and wrong. Most instructors will warn their students that relying on Wikipedia is a sure recipe for failing assignments. Yet there is a way to mobilize this giant encyclopedia for pedagogical purposes. When students in Israel Studies classes are assigned to edit Wikipedia articles, they achieve multiple goals: they gain critical reading skills, shape public knowledge about Israel, and engage in active learning. This article explains how to …

Minnesota State, a public system of 7 universities and 30 colleges serving nearly 400,000 students, has partnered with the Open Textbook Network (OTN) since 2014 to deliver training to nearly 300 faculty to OTN and the need, purpose, and possibilities of OER use in the classroom. Many of these faculty have gone on to peer review one or more texts housed in the Open Textbook Library. While there is still need for these basics, there is also growing interest in aiding faculty to move beyond reviewing existing OERs to adopting, redesigning courses, and even authoring their own open texts. To …
Comparative Analyses Of Discourse In Specialized Stem School Classes, Colby Tofel-Grehl, Carolyn M. Callahan, Louis S. Nadelson
Comparative Analyses Of Discourse In Specialized Stem School Classes, Colby Tofel-Grehl, Carolyn M. Callahan, Louis S. Nadelson
Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications
The authors detail the discourse patterns observed within mathematics and science classes at specialized STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) high schools. Analyses reveal that teachers in mathematics classes tended to engage their students in authoritative discourse while teachers in science classes tended to engage students in dialogic discourse. The authors examined variations in the type of discourse in relationship to the discipline being taught, the educational level of the teacher, and course requirements were also explored.
Classroom Management And The Librarian, Heidi Blackburn, Lauren Hays
Classroom Management And The Librarian, Heidi Blackburn, Lauren Hays
Criss Library Faculty Publications
As librarians take on more instructional responsibilities, the need for classroom management skills becomes vital. Unfortunately, classroom management skills are not taught in library school and therefore, many librarians are forced to learn how to manage a classroom on the job. Different classroom settings such as one-shot instruction sessions and for-credit courses require different management techniques. Also, individuals are often more comfortable with certain strategies compared to other strategies for managing a classroom. With different course settings and personalities of instructors the need to learn classroom management strategies must be recognized for its importance in successful classes taught by librarians.

Early and Special Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper outlines the use of a technology toolkit to support emergent literacy curriculum and instruction in early childhood education settings. Components of the toolkit include hardware and software that can facilitate key emergent literacy skills. Implementation of the comprehensive technology toolkit enhances the development of these critical literacy skills in at-risk young learners.

In the 21st century, “Digital Children” (Edyburn, 2002) are growing up in a world rich with technology, including cell phones, iPods, email, PalmPilots, Web sites, discussion boards, chat rooms, the Internet, and electronic toys and learning games (Siraj-Blatchford & Whitebread, 2003). Young children whose families use technology acquire knowledge of and skills in language and literacy in part through exposure to technology in the home (Jewitt, 2006). For example, McGee and Richgels (2006) observed that many young children become aware of the existence of print and its use by their families in their daily lives through screen presentations on the …

Student response systems (clickers) offer the potential for student engagement and active learning in the classroom. Use of the technology can also help instructors identify areas of uncertainty and use student feedback to customize lectures. Earlier identification of problem areas for both student and instructor should lead to more efficient and effective use of class time and better learning outcomes. This presentation covers best practices in the use of clickers in introductory statistics and principles of managerial finance classes. Topics include how to use clickers, sample exercises, what has worked and what hasn’t worked from personal experience, how to produce …

Earth Science Mini-Lessons: A Service-Learning Strategy For Improving Attitudes Toward Science Of Preservice Elementary Teachers, K. Thompson, B. R. Bickmore, Charles R. Graham, S. C. Yanchar
Faculty Publications
Science instruction in elementary school classrooms is frequently lacking in the United States. One factor that impacts the amount and quality of science instruction is teacher attitudes toward science. The Earth Science Mini-Lesson Project is a strategic program created to help improve preservice elementary school teachers' attitudes toward science in a one-semester college class. Students participating in this project create earth science mini-lessons on topics taken from the Utah Core Curriculum Standards and teach them to elementary students at a local Title I grade school. Attitude survey results from both semesters showed that this service-learning outreach program positively affected students' …
