OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) Australia

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is an international comparative study of student performance directed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). PISA measures the cumulative outcomes of education by assessing how well 15-year-olds, who have nearly completed compulsory schooling in most participating educational systems, are prepared to use their knowledge and skills in particular areas to meet real-world opportunities and challenges. In addition to the cognitive data reported on in Volume I, PISA collected a wealth of student and school contextual data through the background questionnaires. This report focuses on a variety of constructs related to …

Relationship Between Students’ Economic, Cultural, And Social Status, School Climate And Student Achievement In Indonesia, Alejandra Osses-Vargas, Ursula Schwantner, Ray Adams, Nicole Wernert Oct 2022

Relationship Between Students’ Economic, Cultural, And Social Status, School Climate And Student Achievement In Indonesia, Alejandra Osses-Vargas, Ursula Schwantner, Ray Adams, Nicole Wernert

International Conference on Assessment and Learning (ICAL)

PISA 2018 data shows that, in Indonesia, the relationship between students’ economic, cultural, and social status and their scores on reading achievement is weak. However, there is great variation between schools in average reading achievement with over 40% of the explainable variation in reading achievement being between-schools. In addition, in Indonesia, there is low social diversity across schools (students within schools are likely to be of similar economic, cultural, and social background). These conditions raise the question of whether school factors play a role – specifically whether school climate has a compensating, mediating or moderating effect on the relationship between …

Providing An Elementary School Environment That Encourages Girls To See Their Place In The Stem Fields, Hannah Borchardt

Innovations and Critical Issues in Teaching and Learning

For many years, women have been underrepresented in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields at the collegiate and professional levels. The two primary reasons for this underrepresentation are the influence of gender stereotypes and biases surrounding STEM and the lack of female role models in the STEM field. Elementary educators must do what they can to address these issues in an effort to allow girls to see their place in STEM. To help counter the influence of gender stereotypes and biases in STEM, elementary educators should integrate STEM into the classroom for all students to participate and have …

The Third Teacher: An Analysis Of Aesthetic And Intentionality Of Space In The Classroom, Madeline F. Brown May 2020

The Third Teacher: An Analysis Of Aesthetic And Intentionality Of Space In The Classroom, Madeline F. Brown

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

The Third Teacher—a concept central to the Reggio Emilia approach to education, states the physical environment plays a vital role in learning. Early education theorists, such as Loris Malaguzzi and Maria Montessori, emphasize the idea of a prepared classroom environment; however, modern day classrooms are seemingly arranged without much intention. Because of this, current classroom spaces are not in alignment with research from past theorists, resulting in compromised student achievement. This thesis answers the question, “How can educators purposefully and practically utilize the classroom space to maximize student learning?” on the basis of lighting, seating, organization of materials, color scheme, …

Secondary Student Perceptions Of School Climate Elements And Self-Reported Academic Self-Efficacy As Factors Of School Continuous Improvement, Marianne Arzadon Torales Jan 2020

Secondary Student Perceptions Of School Climate Elements And Self-Reported Academic Self-Efficacy As Factors Of School Continuous Improvement, Marianne Arzadon Torales

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

State and national agencies recognize the link between school quality and student academic and behavioral outcomes. Research has shown that a positive school climate and high academic self-efficacy are associated with positive academic and behavioral student outcomes. Determining the school climate factors that contribute to academic self-efficacy will add to the limited research on the relationship between these two constructs and provide information to prospective and current school leaders in cultivating an effective school.

A multiple regression was used to determine how student-perceived school climate factors predict self-reported student academic self-efficacy and of these factors, which one provided the strongest …

Examining The Development And Classroom Dynamics Of Student Disaffection Over Multiple Time Periods: Short-Term Episodes And Long-Term Trajectories, Emily Anne Saxton Jun 2019

Examining The Development And Classroom Dynamics Of Student Disaffection Over Multiple Time Periods: Short-Term Episodes And Long-Term Trajectories, Emily Anne Saxton

Dissertations and Theses

Student disaffection, a pervasive problem in middle school classrooms, is costly not only for disaffected students themselves (e.g., declines in GPA, high school drop out) but also for their teachers (e.g., stress-related health outcomes). Despite its importance, however, open questions remain regarding both the development of disaffection during early adolescence and the classroom dynamics that underlie changes in disaffection. This dissertation includes two free-standing manuscripts that explore these open questions regarding the development and classroom dynamics of disaffection. Each focuses on different developmental time scales and employs different methodological approaches to examine these important, but unanswered questions.

Drawing from a …

Welcoming The Stranger: Essays On Teaching And Learning In A Diverse Society

Occasional Paper Series

This issue of "Occasional Papers" is filled with stories by and about "strangers"--people of all ages who perceive themselves or have been perceived by others as outsiders either because of who they are, where they have come from, or even how recently they have arrived in this country. Successful educators know that the ability to welcome the stranger into the classroom, indeed an entire group of strangers each September, is essential to building a productive, caring community of learners. They know, too, that, from the point of view of students new to the school or society, the culture of the …

Classroom Life In The Age Of Accountability Apr 2019

Classroom Life In The Age Of Accountability

Occasional Paper Series

Concerned that various reforms promising greater professional autonomy and status as well as student success are actually disempowering teachers, impoverishing intellectual life in schools, and serving as a portal for the marketization of teaching and education, editors invited teachers to respond to the ways in which the proliferation of standards and testing combined with their own loss of professional control is altering the landscape of American education. The editors' goal was to raise questions about whether and how educators are balancing the demands of high stakes testing, scripted curricula, and a focus on performance outcomes with the emotional complexity of …

Supporting Therapy In The Classroom : Strategies For Occupational, Speech/Language, And Physical Therapy, Laure Elise Recoder

Graduate Student Independent Studies

With so many developmental differences early in life, it is important for early childhood educators to be just as supportive as therapists, and possibly more so, because they spend more time with children. This guide is intended for early childhood educators working with young children who receive services in occupational therapy, speech- language therapy, and/or physical therapy. When children receive therapy services, they are often removed from the classroom setting and are seen privately by a therapist, or with a small group, in a separate room. However, intervention strategies are also effective when implemented in the child’s natural environment, such …
