Critical Race Theory And The Civic Education Debate: Why Race Should Be A Part Of The Curriculum, Reilly Scott
Critical Race Theory And The Civic Education Debate: Why Race Should Be A Part Of The Curriculum, Reilly Scott
CMC Senior Theses
If we accept the purpose of civic education is to teach students how to be good citizens, I argue the way civic education currently exists and operates is failing to achieve this goal. Traditional and mechanical civics has been the norm in education for decades. This has failed to teach students how to be good citizens because it 1) often isolates students with non-dominant identities 2) it does not encourage the motivation nor skills needed for civic engagement after high school and 3) does not include race as part of the curriculum. I argue race needs to be included in …

“Everyone Off The Ship”: Children Becoming Civic Minded In A Summer Literacy Program, Janet Isbell, Amber Spears, Cassie Schmitt-Matzen, Lindsey Braisted
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
Increased emphasis in recent years on reading and/or math achievement have sidelined social studies teaching in elementary education (Boyle-Baise, Hsu, Johnson, Serriere, & Stewart, 2012; Heafner & Fitchett, 2012; McMurrer, 2007; Shapiro & Brown, 2018). When teachers do address civics education, instruction typically sets up students for future citizenship duties, with a focus on rules and laws (Moyer, 1981; Swalwell & Payne, 2019). This traditional banking model of schooling (Freire, 1970/2009) makes children the receivers of knowledge and overlooks what they can do already (Swalwell & Payne, 2019). Efforts are needed to rethink “civics education as an emancipatory experience in …

The first survey was sent to SD K-12 teachers and the second to University of South Dakota students in order to compare the answers …
Creating Classroom Community To Welcome Children Experiencing Trauma, Katherina A. Payne, Jennifer Keys Adair, Shubhi Sachdeva
Creating Classroom Community To Welcome Children Experiencing Trauma, Katherina A. Payne, Jennifer Keys Adair, Shubhi Sachdeva
Occasional Paper Series
How elementary and early childhood classrooms engage with socio-emotional learning is deeply connected to creating a classroom community. Yet, much of socio-emotional learning curricula focuses on the individual child, rather than on the everyday interactions that build and sustain community. During the Civic Action and Young Children study, we spent a year in a Head Start preschool in Texas, where we noticed that although many children in the class struggled with varied difficult circumstances including poverty, homelessness, discrimination and threat of deportation, the teachers did not label them as homeless, illegal immigrants or poor. Additionally, children seemed to help one …

Theses and Dissertations--Curriculum and Instruction
This dissertation consists of three articles that focus on teaching, learning, and testing in civic education. Each article provides insights into how instructional practices in teaching and learning intersect with a state-mandated civics test.
Article One, “Is the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services Test Worthy of Being Included as a High School Graduation Requirement? A Closer Look at Implications for Kentucky,” is mixed methods sequential explanatory study on the implementation of the civics test requirement within two specific Kentucky school districts using student-level assessment data. Findings indicate that opportunities not only to learn civic content, but also learn it …

The ARtS (Aesthetic, Reflexive thoughts, & Sharing) Initiative is an innovative program for engaging children in reflexive thought about active citizenship in urban communities. This article explicates how children use art to imagine the alternatives in civic education. Using the heart metaphor as active citizenship, the authors illustrate how this organ connects citizens and pumps our desire for a better community through our veins, thus instigating social change. This article demonstrates the power of imagination to inspire students to conceptualize a more just society.
Preschool As A Wellspring For Democracy: Endorsing Traits Of Reasonableness In Early Childhood Education, Joy D. Erickson, Winston C. Thompson
Preschool As A Wellspring For Democracy: Endorsing Traits Of Reasonableness In Early Childhood Education, Joy D. Erickson, Winston C. Thompson
Democracy and Education
Traits of reasonableness are necessary characteristics of successfully engaged citizens within pluralistic liberal democratic societies. Given the evident unlikelihood of the spontaneous development of these critical characteristics, pedagogical effort ought to be exerted towards ensuring that this goal is realized. In what follows, we argue that preschool presents a unique and compelling opportunity for supporting this worthy pedagogical aim, such that, despite purported prohibitions entailed within arguments for the political neutrality of curricula, it ought to be promoted within this area. In the service of illustrating this point, we provide four examples of promising beginnings for this work.

Journal of Media Literacy Education
Amid growing concerns over the role of “fake news” in civic and political life, efforts to understand how to best prepare youth to evaluate and reason about online sources have gained a sense of urgency. However, less attention has been paid to how such skills are used in the context of the broader array of information behavior that is typical of civic and political participation today—particularly in the circulation of information. Through thematic analysis of interviews and think aloud tasks with n=24 urban high school students reasoning through the processes of search, credibility analysis and circulating information for the purposes …

The teachers, two in the United States and two in the United Kingdom, are known to be exemplary at synthesizing multicultural, global, and civic education. We, the two authors, one a female from …

Reconsidering Phase 1 Of The Iea Civic Education Study, Doyle Stevick

The comparison of qualitative data across a large number of cases has great potential for research into civic education worldwide. The IEA study made important strides in collecting appropriate data and in developing techniques to analyze that data. The Octagon Model used in the study captures the complexity of political socialization, but systematic research into all of its dimensions is virtually impossible. Ethnography has different emphases, but has great flexibility to adapt to many contexts, while research designed for comparability often excludes important differences. Together, they can provide a rich set of perspectives on the development of citizens around the …

Engaging In Excellence Through Academic Service-Learning: A Way To Teach And Learn Citizenship And Justice In Any College Course, Susan R. Madsen
Susan R. Madsen
Academic service-learning is a relatively new pedagogy that is beginning to be used in colleges and universities courses across the country. It has been cited as a “means of responding to concerns about the loss of a sense of community and concurrent citizenship behaviors in the country” (Shafer, 1995). According to Dewey (1938), “The society is a number of people held together because they are working along common lines, in a common spirit, and with reference to common aims. The common needs and aims demand a growing interchange of thought and growing unity of sympathetic feeling. The radical reason that …
