Behavior Training For Educators: What Training Do Educators Need To Support Students With Challenging Behaviors?, Michelle R. Milburn

The purpose of this study was to investigate the behavioral training programs/frameworks and Professional Development (PD) delivery methods that certified staff - including teachers, speech-language pathologists, school psychologists, occupational therapists, and teachers on special assignment - as well as administrators, believe to be necessary to address the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students exhibiting challenging behaviors. This national study used survey methods to explore the views of US K-12 public school educators on the PD needed to support student behavior effectively. In the 1960s a talented team of curriculum developers began to create the curriculum that is today known as Elements of Mathematics: Foundations(EMF) (IMACS, 2006). This study addressed the topic of students with consistent challenging behaviors and their perceptions of school, teachers, education, and needs. The author was a preservice teacher serving her clinical teaching internship in an eighth-grade Spanish Level 1 classroom. The goal of the study was to better understand students with numerous referrals, or that identified as “bad students.” For this study, the author collected data in the form of surveys, student interviews, and classroom observations. Challenging behaviors in special education have been an issue in special education classroom settings. In recent years it has become more evident that there is a need for improvement, although schools around the country have worked diligently to implement behavioral support plans that could improve or eliminate challenging behaviors. Many teachers in special education are under or unprepared to tackle these issues. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the use of a supplementary math curriculum, “Mawhiba,” that was designed for gifted students, would be appropriate for regular students in a mixed-abilities classroom. The researcher investigated the effects of implementing the Mawhiba enriched supplementary math curriculum on students’ achievements in mathematics and on students’ attitudes toward mathematics in Hail State, Saudi Arabia. The research design was an experimental randomized subject pretest, post-test, control group design. Two schools were chosen (a female middle school and a male middle school). In Crookston’s recent national survey, 3,000 academic leaders identified “dealing with problem faculty” as the issue with which they most wanted help; it was their stand-alone top concern. Problem colleagues in any organization include bullies, jerks, passive-aggressives, poor performers, and those who are psychologically distressed. Crookston draws from best-selling business and leadership literature, and presents six calculated steps for effectively dealing with a challenging colleague. Participants leave this workshop with sound practical guidance on how to act when things go wrong, but more importantly how to ensure that things go right.

This chapter describes the psy-knowledges central to preservice teachers' understandings of challenging behaviour. Particularly, it pays attention to the unexpectedly dangerous questions generated when working towards a practical and integrated understanding of how biological, psychological, and ecological factors interact. This chapter deploys Foucauldian discourse analysis to problematize the preservice teachers' shifting and changeable awareness of these causal attributions of behaviour and how this impacts their pedagogy.

Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) places an emphasis on the play, where tactical and strategic problems are posed in a modified game environment, ultimately drawing upon students to make decisions. It places the focus of a lesson on the student in a game situation where cognitive skills such as ‘tactics’, decision-making and problem solving are critical....with isolated technique development utilised only when the student recognises the need for it’ (Webb and Thompson, 1998).
