Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify and describe how California Community College senior-level leaders of color are culturally responsive in their leadership strategies, based on Horsford, Grosland, and Gunn’s (2011) culturally relevant leadership framework.
Methodology: This qualitative ethnographic study identified and described the culturally responsive leadership practices utilized by 15 senior-level leaders of color within California Community Colleges and explored how their lived experiences and identities influence their ability to lead their institutions using the four dimensions of Horsford et al.’s (2011) culturally relevant leadership framework: political context, personal journey, pedagogical approach, and professional duty. …

Blaqueer And Here: Black Queer And Trans Students’ Path To Thriving, Marvens Pierre
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
In this study, I have investigated the ways in which Black queer and trans students have (or have not) fostered community, lived authentically, and benefitted from support of their identity development. I explored what support (or lack thereof) and identity development that exists within the realm of predominantly White higher educational institutions as well as San Diego community resources at large. This study approach consisted of conducting strategic outreach to universities in San Diego, California, and building community circles to facilitate processes of qualitative narrative analysis. This led to an intentional focus group dialogue space that allowed the participants to …

Impacts Of The Erosion Of State Funding For Public Higher Education: Longitudinal Case Studies Of Four State Systems – California, Georgia, New York And Wisconsin, Meghan M. Moore-Wilk
Impacts Of The Erosion Of State Funding For Public Higher Education: Longitudinal Case Studies Of Four State Systems – California, Georgia, New York And Wisconsin, Meghan M. Moore-Wilk
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The rising cost of higher education in America is national news on a regular basis and many feel that as the costs increase the American dream of upward mobility slips further and further out of reach. Much of the research on higher education to date focuses on the quantifiable changes in support for public colleges and universities at the national or state levels, but less is written about individual state public higher education systems. This study provides a fifty-year, fifty-state history of funding for the operating costs of higher education and new information, from the four quadrants of the country, …

Life Being An International Student In The United States: Acculturation, Culture Shock, And Identity Transformation, Lai Yan Vivyan Lam
Master's Theses
The population of international students at community colleges in the United States has increased significantly over the past decade. International students play a big role in building the cultural diversity on campus by bringing over different cultures and sharing their global perspective to the local community. However, they often face challenges adapting into American culture due to cultural differences in education system, language, lifestyle, etc. By looking into the acculturation process of international students to analyze the culture shock and cultural identity changes they experienced, this paper intends to seek ways to help this group of students to ease their …

Affirmative Confusion: A Proposed Paradigm Shift In Higher Education Disciplinary Proceedings, Kendal Poirier
Affirmative Confusion: A Proposed Paradigm Shift In Higher Education Disciplinary Proceedings, Kendal Poirier
University of Massachusetts Law Review
This Note examines the codification of affirmative consent statutes in New York and California as well as the language of Title IX of Education Amendments of 1972, with the ultimate goal of demonstrating that the two statutory constructions cannot co-exist without jeopardizing accused students’ due process rights. During the course of a college or university disciplinary proceeding in an affirmative consent jurisdiction, the potential exists for a burden shift onto the accused student to affirmatively prove consent was obtained. Such a shift directly conflicts with Title IX mandates for prompt and equitable treatment. This Note proposes that in order to …

K-12 Categorical Entitlement Funding For English Language Learners In California: An Intradistrict Case Study, Oscar Jimenez-Castellanos, Irina Okhremtchouk
