Alternative Behavior Programs To Be Effectively Implemented In Middle Schools, Suzanne G. Carlson Aug 1992

Alternative Behavior Programs To Be Effectively Implemented In Middle Schools, Suzanne G. Carlson

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Discipline in public schools tends to be the primary concern of people today. Disciplinary problems are not necessarily the school's fault. Many of the responsibilities traditionally assigned to the home are now assumed by the schools. Transportation, feeding, child care, substance abuse education, and sex education are just a few responsibilities now initiated by the public school system. Funding for public education has also declined in the past ten years. Because of this, new facilities are not being built to handle overcrowding, more teachers can not be hired to lower student/teacher ratios, and alternative methods of discipline are not being …

A Low Cost Mini-Program Of Walking And Behavior Modification For Weight Control And Fitness, Jeanne M. Longo Jan 1986

A Low Cost Mini-Program Of Walking And Behavior Modification For Weight Control And Fitness, Jeanne M. Longo

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The author developed a program of behavior modification, nutrition, and fitness tips, and walking exercise for weight control and improved general fitness. The low cost program, targeted for semi-sedentary workers, but adaptable to the elderly and others, sought to promote fitness through an exercise program geared to the individuals tolerance and pace, and the format enabled the use of a lay leader/facilitator. (Appendices include survey forms, pre-program notice, program, tasks of facilitator, work sheet and poet program survey.)

The Effects Of Two Counseling Models, Values Clarification, And Cognitive Behavior Modification On Reading Improvement And Self Concept, Linda Gillispie Jan 1983

The Effects Of Two Counseling Models, Values Clarification, And Cognitive Behavior Modification On Reading Improvement And Self Concept, Linda Gillispie

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of two counseling models, values clarification and cognitive behavior modification on the improvement of reading skills and the enhancement of self-concept . The subjects were 137 tenth grade students at a central California high school. Two experimental groups and one control group with approximately 25 students each were pre- and posttested with a Nelson Reading Test, Form A and B, and a semantic differential. One experimental group received values clarification training, the other cognitive behavior modification training. The study was replicated once for validity. It was hypothesized that both experimental …

Behavioral Treatment Approaches To Obesity: Successes With The Nonretarded And Retarded, Anthony F. Rotatori, Harvey Switzky, Robert A. Fox Jan 1981

Behavioral Treatment Approaches To Obesity: Successes With The Nonretarded And Retarded, Anthony F. Rotatori, Harvey Switzky, Robert A. Fox

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

This article discusses the successful use of behavioral approaches, which have been adopted from research with non-retarded individuals, to the treatment of obese retarded individuals. The first section delineates a variety of approaches with non-retarded obese individuals whereas the second section summarizes the efficacy of these approaches with the obese retarded. The last section discusses practical and future research implications.

The Influence Of Response Modality On Children's Imitation Of Helping And Coercive Behavior, Wallace Arthur Melcher Jan 1978

The Influence Of Response Modality On Children's Imitation Of Helping And Coercive Behavior, Wallace Arthur Melcher

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the effects of adult, film mediated models on the prosocial behavior of school children. Also the effect of congruency and incongruency between the model's response and the response the children were asked to perform was investigated. Thirty third-grade students, 19 female and 11 male, were randomly assigned to three groups. The first group observed a short film of an adult model providing helping (positive) feedback to a young boy who was playing a marble maze game. The second group was treated identically to the first except that the model provided coercive (negative) feedback. The third group …

Observation Of Training Room Stimuli In Determining Stimulus Control And Transfer Of Training, David Micheal Lietzke Jan 1977

Observation Of Training Room Stimuli In Determining Stimulus Control And Transfer Of Training, David Micheal Lietzke

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Ten developmentally disabled children participated in an assessment of stimulus control and transfer of training. Each subject was taught to perform a simple, nonverbal, imitative task in a training room, and transfer to a novel setting was assessed. During training, subjects were video-taped in order to determine how often each visual stimulus in the training room was looked at. After an initial transfer t est each subject participated in a test of the stimulus control acquired by visual stimuli from the training room. Utilizing two groups (N = 5 each), subjects received an additional transfer test in the novel setting …

Youths As Behavior Change Agents In An Institution, Susan J. Carstens Jan 1975

Youths As Behavior Change Agents In An Institution, Susan J. Carstens

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Behavioral studies have shown that youths in various settings can function effectively as behavior change agents. This study used five 15 to 18 year old male youths in a closed institutional setting as behavior change agents for five male Youth Counselors. Youths specified staff behaviors they wanted to change, collected frequency data on each specified staff behavior, and suggested and implemented treatments to change staff behavior. A multiple baseline design across staff members was used to demonstrate the effects of youths' interventions on staff behaviors. Staff increased their frequency of positive verbal comments and decreased their frequency of negative verbal …

Behavior Modification, Lois Cox Jan 1974

Behavior Modification, Lois Cox

Honors Theses

Even though this seems to be a relatively new area of education, as early as 1920 behavior modification has been used in correcting behavior.

J.B. Watson had four basic ideas in this area: 1. The educational response of fear could be conditioned. 2. It would transfer to stimuli other than the initial stimulus which caused the fear. 3. The fear would last over a period of time. 4. It could be unlearned.

These four items are very similar to the techniques used today in the modification program. Watson's experiment with a small child named Albert proved his above theories to …
