Effects Of Yoga On Older Residing In Assisted Living Facilities, Anita Walters, Luke Kriley

SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days

Although the number of adults aged 65 and older has been steadily increasing world-wide for the past three decades, few studies have been conducted to explore the benefits of a yoga-type exercise program for those residing in assisted living facilities. A within-subjects repeated measures quasi-experimental design was used to examine the effectiveness of standing yoga postures in improving strength, balance, and quality of life in older adults currently residing in an assisted living facility. In the single-group design the participants were pre-assessed in week one, reassessed in week 2 for test-retest reliability, attended a 30-minute exercise session three times per …

The main aim of this study is to examine the correlation between functional movement screen (FMS) and postural stability in football players from an asymmetrical perspective. Materials and Methods: Fifty professional football players (male n = 25; age 21.40 ± 1.94 years; female n = 25; age 21.04 ± 1.24 years) volunteered for this study. All subjects completed a FMS test consisting of seven items and …

Impact Of The Engineering Design Process On Rural Female Students’ Achievement And Self-Efficacy, Whitney Lowery Oberndorf Oct 2023

Impact Of The Engineering Design Process On Rural Female Students’ Achievement And Self-Efficacy, Whitney Lowery Oberndorf

Theses and Dissertations

Nearly one-fifth of U.S. children attend rural schools; however, these students have fewer opportunities for high-quality STEM learning. Rural students are also less likely to attend college and less likely to enroll in STEM majors than their urban and suburban peers. In conjunction with these factors, female students are also less likely to pursue STEM degrees and work in STEM fields. Broadening access and exposure to these areas, as well as improving female perceptions about STEM fields, is critical to closing the gap. This mixed-methods action research study was an effort to increase female achievement and self-efficacy in science and …

What Is Inquiry-Based Mathematical Learning?, Suzanne Marie Killian May 2023

What Is Inquiry-Based Mathematical Learning?, Suzanne Marie Killian

2023 Symposium

To make schools accountable for the education and learning they provided for their students, updating the Elementary and Secondary Education Act with the No Child Left Behind Act created a ripple effect of damage to student learning. This kind of pressure on schools and students puts more focus on students getting good grades than focusing on effort. Lack of effort created bad habits and poor study skills, especially in mathematics. Recent studies state that math proficiency in the U.S. is 38% and 50% in Washington state (Public School Review, 2023). This type of learning outcome cries for help on how …

Balance Control And Exercise-Based Interventions In Older Adults, Youngwook Kim

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Loss of balance and consequential falling, caused by natural degenerations in the sensory and motor systems with aging, are critical issues that require constant research exploration to ultimately improve the quality of life in older populations. Balance can be simply classified into static and dynamic balance, and the latter is more associated with common causes of falling in older adults. There are numerous ways to improve dynamic balance, and exercise training has been considered the most beneficial intervention for that purpose. Specifically, aquatic exercises have been suggested as a promising modality because several properties of water, including buoyance and hydrostatic …
