Teaching College In The High School: Unique Features And Challenges Of Site-Based Dual Enrollment, Paul Williams
Teaching College In The High School: Unique Features And Challenges Of Site-Based Dual Enrollment, Paul Williams
Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges
After a sharp decline associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, 2023 marked two consecutive years of increase in the number of freshman and high-school dual enrollees, with under-18-year-olds driving a disproportionate share of this growth. The rising importance of this latter student group presents new opportunities for colleges as well as underappreciated challenges rooted precisely in the high-school locale of concurrent Dual Enrollment courses. While some known stumbling blocks to effective college-level instruction for high school students are inherent in the age and lower maturity levels of the dominant age cohort, others stem from matters beyond the control of students and …
The Relationship Between Student Engagement And Act Aspire Reading Scores Among Ninth-Grade Students In One Northwest Arkansas Junior High School, Dwight Vincent Jr.
The Relationship Between Student Engagement And Act Aspire Reading Scores Among Ninth-Grade Students In One Northwest Arkansas Junior High School, Dwight Vincent Jr.
ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between academic achievement and attendance. Reading proficiency is foundational to overall academic success. In this study, reading proficiency served as the operational definition for the level of student academic success. Out-of-school suspension is a disciplinary consequence as a result of student behavior and correlates to student attendance. This quantitative, correlational study examined the relationship between student engagement, as defined by student attendance and discipline, and reading proficiency, as measured by the 2021-22 ACT Aspire Reading scores for ninth-grade students in one northwest Arkansas junior high school.
Descriptive data analysis was …
Examining The Impact A Bus Driver Attendance Incentive Program Had On Bus Driver Attendance In A Rural Mississippi School District, Samuel B. Allison
Examining The Impact A Bus Driver Attendance Incentive Program Had On Bus Driver Attendance In A Rural Mississippi School District, Samuel B. Allison
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the impact of a bus driver attendance incentive program implemented in a rural Mississippi school district with the aim of improving bus driver attendance rates. There is a shortage of bus drivers across Mississippi which has made bus driver attendance paramount. Bus driver absenteeism causes disruptions in student transportation services and affects overall school operations. To address this problem, a rural Mississippi school district introduced a bus driver attendance incentive program that provided financial incentives for bus drivers who maintained perfect attendance rates each month.
The research methodology involved collecting and analyzing attendance data for bus drivers …
Post-Pandemic Student Attendance, Becki Delloyd
Post-Pandemic Student Attendance, Becki Delloyd
Dissertations
Student attendance has been a national concern since the start of compulsory education in America; however, since the COVID-19 pandemic, attendance plummeted to never- before-seen attendance rates. Nationally, by the end of the 2021-2022 school year, nearly one in three students were absent 10% or more of the school year (Attendance Works, 2023). My 39-question survey conducted in two vastly different states between April and May of 2023 corroborated the national data and resulted in nearly one in three students being absent 10 or more school days in a year. Through my study, I explored parents’ perceptions of post-pandemic K–12 …

Left Out: Chronic Absenteeism In Elementary Schools, Catarina Morrissette
Honors Program Theses and Projects
In Massachusetts in 2022, approximately 33,000 students were chronically absent (missing ten percent of the 180-day school year) students (Buyinza, 2022). The purpose of this research project was to learn what strategies and programs work to support elementary students who are chronically absent, and why students are missing school. Chronic absenteeism impacts all academics but particularly reading levels; social skills and future career opportunities are also negatively impacted (DESE, 2022). Having resources to support educators and their students during these trying times is important for the success of a child’s educational future. As part of this project, teachers, administrators, school …

The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On The Achievement Of Chronically Absent Grade 5 Students, Sakeena Alexandra Ash-Cary
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Chronic absenteeism has been shown to be a strong predictor of student achievement. However, there is a lack of research studies that examine if differences exist among chronically absent students in Title I and non-Title I settings. The purpose of this causal-comparative study was to determine if socioeconomic status imparts any additional impacts on the achievement of chronically absent students as measured by the Virginia SOLs. The data collected include achievement data from the Virginia SOLs. A quantitative research design was used to examine, analyze, and compare standardized mathematics, English, and science test scores along with attendance rates of fifth …

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Every Student Succeeds Act (2015) requires all schools to ensure that all students are receiving a quality education. Multiple measures are used to evaluate the quality of instruction students receive. The Iowa Department of Education assigns a rating to a school based on students’ assessment scores, which measure students’ reading, math, science, and social studies proficiencies. Schools also receive percentages for components of a Conditions of Learning survey. Based on assessment data scores, Blue Grass Elementary score received a commendable rating. However, improvements can be made to improve instruction using differentiated instruction by implementing a multi-tiered system of support and …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The research was designed to evaluate the effects of homelessness on student outcomes in the area of attendance and academics. Studies showed a higher percentage of families who identify as homeless over the past two decades. As a result, the federal McKinney-Vento Act was formulated to help target those students and families who struggle with adequate housing. However, the premise of the McKinney-Vento Act does not extend beyond providing such services. In the arena of academics and attendance, little educational data has been researched to combat the possible struggles students possess particularly in the areas of reading and math. Notably, …

Bringing Students With Low Agreeableness To Attend Collegiate Sports: A Moderated Mediation Model With Team Identification And Student Involvement, Chanwook Do, Jun-Phil Uhm, Heetae Cho, Hyun-Woo Lee
Journal of Applied Sport Management
In a college athletics setting, we investigated a moderated mediation model of the effect of team identification on attendance intention where student involvement was the mediator and agreeableness was the moderator. Results showed that student involvement mediated the relationship between team identification and attendance intention, and agreeableness moderated the effect of student involvement on attendance intention. In particular, the interaction effect by agreeableness indicated how less agreeable students would be more willing to attend games when they are more involved in campus activities. Details of this study, including theoretical and practical implications, research limitations, and future directions, are discussed.
