Collaborating With Employers: Tips For Successful Partnerships, Jaclyn Camden

While supporting students in getting a job is important, support doesn’t stop once the student gets a job. Once students are hired, it is necessary to provide on-the-job support through job coaches or staff that provide on the job support. In addition to supporting students, a key component of job coaching is supporting employers. This resource explains the various roles of job coaches and tips on how to build collaborative partnerships with employers.

This literature review by the Metropolitan Educational Research Consortium (MERC) and Institute for Collaborative Research and Evaluation (ICRE), in partnership with the Virginia Talent + Opportunity Partnership (V-TOP) and State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) explores work-based learning and its implications for PK-12 institutions, institutions of higher education, and hosting organizations (e.g. employers). The report also provides background information about the foundations of work-based learning and concludes with a series of recommendations for practice, policy, and future research related to work-based learning. One of the main goals for students attending college is to provide opportunities for career exploration and ultimately, to secure paid work. One way to do that is through apprenticeships. In this brief, you will learn about the key components of apprenticeships, the reasons why apprenticeships are a promising practice in inclusive postsecondary education (IPSE), and the steps to develop registered apprenticeship programs. Information about the Early Childhood Education pilot apprenticeship program at Next Steps at Vanderbilt is shared as an example of the use of apprenticeships in IPSE.

In response to the introduction of the Early Educator Apprenticeship Act in both houses of Congress, this positioning statement outlines recommendations for rebuilding the workforce at this critical moment with quality and equity at the center through apprenticeships, which have been effective in improving K-12 school systems. A national system of robust apprenticeship programs would support rebuilding our supply of care while also ensuring educators receive the high-quality clinical practice and coaching required for the complex task of supporting early brain development.

Apprenticeships offer a practical solution to a growing skills gap, youth unemployment and rising school debt in the United States by delivering a low cost, high-skilled, educated, competitive labor force. Government, industry, and educational institutions have increased focus on expanding apprenticeships. However, enrollment and participation in apprenticeships in the United States remains low. Why?

Legislators, educators, and business leaders agree two primary factors contribute to low apprenticeship participation in the United States: lack of awareness and negative perception of apprenticeships. This fixed-convergent mixed-methods study explored only the first factor, awareness of apprenticeships among college students in Nevada.

Problem-based learning (PBL) is apprenticeship for real-life problem solving, helping students acquire the knowledge and skills required in the workplace. Although the acquisition of knowledge and skills makes it possible for performance to occur, without self-efficacy the performance may not even be attempted. I examined how student self-efficacy, as it relates to being software development professionals, changed while involved in a PBL environment. Thirty-one undergraduate university computer science students completed a 16-week capstone course in software engineering during their final semester prior to graduation. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Employment and Training Institute conducted research studies from 1994-2014 on access of African Americans and Latinos to equal employment opportunities for the City of Milwaukee, NAACP, Private Industry Council of Milwaukee County (MAWIB/Employ Milwaukee), Milwaukee Public Schools, Helen Bader Foundation, and Greater Milwaukee Foundation. The analysis focused on labor market issues for African Americans, Hispanics and other non-Caucasian populations as critical to addressing housing integration and economic concerns in local communities. State Use Of Workforce System Net Impact Estimates And Rates Of Return, Kevin Hollenbeck

The net impacts and private and social benefits and costs of workforce development programs were estimated in three separate studies; two of them in Washington and one in Virginia. The programs included the public job training system, programs at community and technical colleges, adult basic education, private career schools, high school career and technical education, and vocational rehabilitation for disabled individuals and for blind or visually impaired individuals. The net impact analyses were conducted using a nonexperimental methodology. Individuals who had encountered the workforce development programs were statistically matched to individuals who had not.
