Jon Merryman, Ouachita Baptist University’s director of alumni relations and the Ouachita Student Foundation, recently was appointed as a commissioner to the Alumni Affairs Directors Group with the national Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU). Merryman is one of seven directors from the U.S. and Canada appointed to the group by the president of CCCU, Shirley Hoogstra.

It’s been 20 years since a group of Ouachita Baptist University students and three of their professors, returning from a mission trip to Europe, crashed on the final leg of their trip in Little Rock on American Airlines Flight 1420. Survivors returned to Arkadelphia this past weekend to mark the 20th anniversary of that fateful night, June 1, 1999.

Miss Virginia Queen, Professor Emerita of Music at Ouachita Baptist University, died Wednesday, March 29, at age 96.

Miss Queen, who graduated from Ouachita in 1944 with Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees, also earned a Master of Music degree from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. She taught at Prescott High School and the Tennessee College for Women before joining the Ouachita music faculty in 1946. She retired in 1986 after 40 years of service at Ouachita. In recent years, she resided at Parkway Village in Little Rock.

Dr. J.D. Patterson, a noted alumnus, benefactor and former trustee of Ouachita Baptist University, died Sunday, March 26, at age 90.

University trustees affirmed Dr. Patterson’s lifelong commitment to Ouachita by naming the J.D. Patterson School of Natural Sciences in his honor in 2002. A 1947 Ouachita alumnus, he received Ouachita’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1984 and an honorary Doctor of Science degree in 1999. He served two terms on the Ouachita Board of Trustees from 2005 through 2011.

Honoring its seventh class of Ouachita Alumni Milestone Awards recipients, Ouachita Baptist University recognized outstanding graduates from the classes of 1966, 1976, 1986, 1996 and 2006 at halftime of the Homecoming football game Oct. 15. The alumni honorees were selected by a committee of Ouachita faculty and staff to represent their milestone reunion classes.

This year’s Homecoming festivities also included the presentation of a Worthy Ouachitonian Award by Ouachita President Ben Sells.

Triple Threat earned a standing ovation and four “yes” votes from the celebrity judges for their audition performance on the May 26 season premiere of the popular NBC program, America’s Got Talent.

Triple Threat, a talented trio from Benton, Ark., includes two recent Ouachita Baptist University graduates, Tyler Davis and Will Richey, as well as Caleb Conrad, a student at the University of Arkansas. U.S. Senate Confirms Ouachita Alumna Jane Chu As National Endowment For The Arts Chairman, Trennis Henderson, Ouachita News Bureau

Dr. Jane Chu, a 1979 graduate of Ouachita Baptist University, was confirmed today by the U.S. Senate as chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. Chu was nominated for the post in February by President Obama.

The White House is expected to make the official appointment in the coming days and Chu will begin her new role shortly thereafter, according to the National Endowment for the Arts.

Ouachita Alum Steven Bostick Named New Head Coach Of Tiger Swimming And Diving Programs, Kyle Parris, Ouachita News Bureau

Steven Bostick has been named the new head coach of Ouachita Baptist University's men's and women's swimming and diving teams, according to Ouachita Athletic Director David Sharp. Coach Bostick, a 2008 OBU graduate and four-year letterman, will begin his duties in his new role effective Monday, April 14.
