First-generation and rural college students are considered by many retention theorists and practitioners to be an at-risk population. This study examined the details of the first semester in postsecondary education from the perspective of a group of students who met the demographic criteria of being first-generation to go to college, from rural geographical areas, and from agricultural backgrounds. It focused on the first semester experience, during its occurrence, and how six students of this specific population viewed that phenomenon. The concentration of nutrients in manure storage facilities is important for planning land application activities. Nutrient concentration is usually the critical factor in determining the amount of manure to be spread per acre of land. Manure systems similar in type and management may have characteristically similar concentrations of manure nutrients.

Lagoons combine storage and treatment functions and thus are more sensitive to management inputs than are solid or slurry facilities. The establishment and maintenance of desirable microbiological populations in lagoons requires more specific procedures in the way lagoons are loaded and monitored.

Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) Insurance for fed cattle is a price-risk management tool initially offered in June 2003 to fed cattle producers in Nebraska, Iowa, and Illinois. LRP indemnifies against declines in cash fed cattle sales prices, as measured by a regional weekly weighted average cash slaughter steer price.

This 2004 extension circular examines historical LRP basis and demonstrates its use in hedging with LRP.
