Intensive Esl Course Performance As A Predictor Of Academic Success, Coleman South
Intensive Esl Course Performance As A Predictor Of Academic Success, Coleman South
Dissertations and Theses
In order to determine the reliability of international students' English as a Second Language (ESL) class performance as a predictor of academic performance, a population of 169 international students at Portland State University (PSU) in Portland, Oregon were selected and statistical tests were performed on their GPAs and TOEFL scores. Individual students' GPAs were computed for all ESL classes taken and for each component--grammar, reading, writing, and speaking/listening--as well as for the end of the first quarter, first year, and second year of academic study. Pearson Coefficient Correlations were then computed for the ESL and academic GPAs. The students were …
A Comparison Of The Academic Achievement Of Urban Second-Grade Pupils With Different Forms Of Public Preschool Experience, Elva Williams Hunt
A Comparison Of The Academic Achievement Of Urban Second-Grade Pupils With Different Forms Of Public Preschool Experience, Elva Williams Hunt
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
Assessment of the potential value of the preschool experience has prompted urban educators to consider the advantages of preschool service delivery by the public schools. Urban policy makers ponder whether or not advocacy for preschool education should include advocacy of the provider. This study addressed the provision of preschool service for students from urban low-income families.
The grade placement of students born in three consecutive years was observed to determine their progress during the first three years of public schooling. Students were categorized with regard to their participation in preschool: some had attended a public school system preschool, First Step; …

Effects Of Peer Mentoring On The Achievement And Persistence Of Academically Underprepared College Freshmen, Ann Ferden Austad
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether a peer mentoring program incorporating learning styles impacts upon the achievement and persistence of entry-level academically underprepared college students.
PROCEDURE: Subjects were freshmen at Bemidji State University during the fall terms of 1985 and 1986 who were assigned to remedial/developmental English because of low placement test scores. An experimental group of 31 English 100 students participated in Connections: The Student-to-Student Mentoring Network, a pilot program designed to help underprepared students make a successful transition into college. The experimental group was compared to a control group of 40 students who were …
Effects Of A Home-Based Contingency Program On Improving Academic Performance Of Disadvantaged Middle School Youths, Lupo A. Quitoriano
Effects Of A Home-Based Contingency Program On Improving Academic Performance Of Disadvantaged Middle School Youths, Lupo A. Quitoriano
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Research has demonstrated various ways of improving academic performance of students in public-school classrooms (e.g., Barrish, Saunders, & Wolf, 1969), some of which may be clinically effective but not practical within present school systems. A more practical method is the use of a program involving home-based contingencies. Home-based contingencies simply means that: When children are reinforced by their parents for their appropriate behavior and performance at school, school behavior and performance will improve (Broughton, Barton, & Owen;. 1981). The current study employed a program including home-based contingencies modeled after one created by Shumaker, Hovell, and Sherman (1977), and tested the …
The Impact Of An Intrusive Orientation Model On The Retention And Grade Point Average Of Second Semester Freshmen On Academic Probation At An Urban University, Walter Rupert Earl
The Impact Of An Intrusive Orientation Model On The Retention And Grade Point Average Of Second Semester Freshmen On Academic Probation At An Urban University, Walter Rupert Earl
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
More than one-third of all entering freshmen will not be continuous students into a sophomore year. Academic and orientation interventions usually are based on the assumption that students will self-identify their needs and seek help. The intrusive model is an alternative intervention strategy based on the theory that students will respond to direct contact in which problems in their academic life are identified and assistance offered. To evaluate the effectiveness of the model, seventy-four freshmen who were placed on probation at the end of their first semester participated in an intrusive project involving counseling and evaluation of the causes of …

Goal Ranking Congruence And Academic Achievement--Focus : Mexican, Mexican American And Chicano Middle School Students, Their Parents And Teachers, Margarita Dolores Escobedo Wulftange
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The literature sees community members of Mexican ancestry as persons who are denied full participation in matters of school policies and practices. It also cites that forty percent of children of Mexican ancestry who enter school drop out before they graduate from the twelfth grade. In view of these perceptions, this study was designed to examine what relationship existed among three factors: (1) the goals of a school district; (2) student academic achievement as indicated by GPA; and (3) the intra- group variability among Chicano, Mexican American and Mexican students.
This study assumed that if students, parents and teachers prioritized …

The Effects Of Listening Training On Achievement, Kenneth D. Vineyard
The Effects Of Listening Training On Achievement, Kenneth D. Vineyard
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
Reading has long been recognized as a necessary skill but only recently has there been much interest in listening skills even though listening is the most frequently used language activity. Within the past decade many studies have indicated that listening ability correlates highly with intelligence, vocabulary, and report card grades, and some investigators claim that listening training will improve listening ability. If listening ability correlates positively with report card grades then listening training should aid academic achievement.
The present experiment has investigated the effect of listening training on the grade point averages of college freshmen. Since special treatment of experimental …

The Effect Of Poor Discipline On Achieving A Grade Point Total Consistent With Ability At Tuckahoe Junior High School, John Wayne Traylor
Master's Theses
There has been a great deal of speculation and controversy over discipline in the schools of the world. The causes and effects of poor discipline have been discussed, and much has been written on both subjects. The public schools of America are in the peculiar position of being greatly affected by poor discipline. Being a public institution open to all citizens, the schools have to meet the problem and have to find ways of combatting it in order to maintain an efficient operation in line with the standards of excellence set by the public which sustains them.
It was the …

The Effect Of Mobility On The Scholastic Achievement Of Students At Sacramento Senior High School, James Percy Catterall
