Prior to the pandemic academic library leadership faced a host of challenges, such as budget shortfalls, serials crisis, shifting and evolving technologies and patron expectations. These long-term obstacles were compounded by the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic which required library deans and directors to implement ever evolving safety measures while balancing the needs of library employees, students, faculty, and staff. The mental health of academic librarians and staff has long been the subject of research; however, few studies focused on the mental health experiences of academic library deans and directors. There are many controversies surrounding the use of animals for food, and we have observed that veterinary students are interested in deeper consideration of the ethical, moral, and practical implications associated with animal agriculture. Guided by the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, we developed a discussion-based course focused on the complex issue of consuming animal products to provide practice in seeking and critically evaluating sources.
The course met weekly for eight weeks. Prior to each session, students submitted a brief reflection on the assigned readings and videos, and provided citations for additional relevant materials. Class sessions were …

This study examined the utilization of ICT resources in the management of students with special needs in Enugu State, Nigeria. Two research questions and one hypothesis guided the study. Theoretical model of disability was adopted for the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The population comprised of 200 students with special needs in selected universities in Enugu State. Simple random sampling technique was adopted in selecting 103 students with special needs in university libraries. The COVID-19 pandemic caused higher ed professionals to pivot how they engage students in programs and events. For the 2020-2021 academic year, Pittsburg State University’s Student Life and Library Services created a series of virtual trivia nights. This paper will use the virtual trivia series as a case study to demonstrate the beneficial partnership between Student Life and Library Services at Pittsburg State University. This paper will highlight successes and suggestions on bridging the gap and replicating such a partnership at your institution.

This study employs webometric content analysis to assess the navigability of the state of Georgia's four-year public, academic libraries. The research questions focus on the frequency of the academic library link's appearance on the university homepage, the navigational paths to crucial content on library websites, and the degree to which responsive design was integrated into the academic library websites. The study finds that the library link was located on the university's homepage 8 out of the 17 (47%) websites selected. 8 out of 17 (47%) library homepages were accessible with only one click or link. 2 out of 17 (11.7%) …

No Textbook Cost General Education Pathway: An Effort To Increase Retention At Central Washington University, Maura Valentino, Geri Hopkins

Purpose
This study aims to describe a project that aims to give students a choice to complete their general education requirements without purchasing a textbook.
Design/methodology/approach
In total, 26 faculty, teaching in the new general education curriculum, at Central Washington University were given stipends to eliminate expensive textbooks and use free to the student resources such as open educational resources (OER) or library resources. The data was collected on student savings and student and faculty satisfaction with the program.
Findings
Many paths were created through the general education curriculum, so a student may easily finish these requirements without purchasing a …

Serving as a follow-up to Lund and Agbaji’s 2018 surveys of library employee preferences towards Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress Classification schemes, this study presents inferential comparisons between the responses of cataloging librarians’ and non-cataloging librarians perceptions and preferences towards DDC and LCC. The hypothesis for this research is that, based on the cataloger’s expertise in cataloging and classification relative to the average employee, they may have substantially different perceptions/preferences toward library classification schemes. The data, however, do not reflect such a difference. Instead, we find no statistically significant difference between the perceptions of catalogers and non-catalogers and only …

However, despite successful application of organizational learning (OL), a strategic process for improvement, to enhance services in academic libraries, little is known about OL in libraries of for-profit colleges and universities (FPCUs). The paper presents a series of case studies that describe and demonstrate successful collaborations created via partnerships with instructors, departments, and other groups in both multi-campus and online environments at Georgia Perimeter College (GPC) where all three authors worked together as librarians for five years. The case studies illustrate the use of LibGuides in building librarian-librarian and librarian-faculty partnerships to support teaching and other campus activities. This discussion includes successful strategies for establishing connections and adopting LibGuides as communication tool for collaborative projects.

Are librarians prepared to lead academic libraries into the increasingly complex future of higher education? Results will be shared from a survey using the Bolman and Deal leadership orientation framework (1990, 1991, 1992, 2003) to explore how academic library leaders and managers in Ohio and Michigan prefer to interpret and solve problems. Consisting of four frames, librarians can view situations through a structural lens (involving policies, rules and organizational charts), a human resources lens (tending to the needs of employees), the political lens (competing for power and scarce resources) or the symbolic lens (storytelling, traditions and symbols). In a majority of academic disciplines, grant writing is a skill that is often self-taught or acquired informally by trial and error. Few academic disciplines have grant writing as standard part of their curriculum at the graduate level. Problem Based Learning (PBL) appears to be the way forward. Gen Z students seem to prefer discovery and a self-paced learning environment (often using a variety of gadgets) rather than a more structured instruction module in a classroom setting. Kenney (2008) found that PBL provides the theoretical framework for a learner centered, active instructional experience that relies on collaboration, critical thinking and hands-on interaction with resources. Globalization has influenced educational philosophy and classroom practices around the world. The international collaboration between libraries promotes improvements that bring global perspectives into service design and development and serves as a catalyst for achieving our universities’ initiatives for internationalization. Using the results from surveys conducted within academic libraries in the U.S., the session explores how to successfully initiate and maintain cooperative international programs and how libraries can proactively serve an institutional leadership role in contributing to their campus globalization efforts.
