Time As A Line: Helping Children Make Abstract Ideas Concrete, Rachel Mae Stenner
Time As A Line: Helping Children Make Abstract Ideas Concrete, Rachel Mae Stenner
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
This is a math education project that included research, a lesson plan, and actual in the classroom work with students. Under the advisement of Dr. Rebecca Borowski, I looked into how time, an abstract idea, is taught to young children who are just starting to learn what measurement is, and examined how teachers can better teach time as a more concrete topic. This focused on the idea of turning the abstract time concepts that are thrown at children into the more abstract ideas of both circular and then linear number lines, using physical materials to help guide the process.

From The Field: Using A Simple Guide To Help Students Write Better Abstracts, Rochelle H. Holm, Anna Karin Roo
Faculty Scholarship
Students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) often write abstracts for research assignments but may not understand the purpose of an abstract. This paper presents the pilot of a simple guide for writing abstracts which gave student support to two undergraduate Malawian ELL students for their undergraduate research assignment. The two students and the instructor found the handout was helpful for the students to develop technical writing skills for the abstracts.
The Influences Of Covid-19 On The Job Satisfaction Of Student Conduct Administrators At Institutions Of Higher Education In The State Of Florida, Kenneth L. Maddox
The Influences Of Covid-19 On The Job Satisfaction Of Student Conduct Administrators At Institutions Of Higher Education In The State Of Florida, Kenneth L. Maddox
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the job satisfaction of student conduct administrators (SCAs) at institutions of higher education in the state of Florida during times of COVID-19. Student conduct issues constantly change on college campuses, and the demands for SCAs to evolve with the changes take a toll on their mental and physical health. SCAs are responsible for maintaining ethical, academic, and social integrity by providing oversight and enforcement of codes of student conduct at institutions of higher education. In times of crisis, like the COVID-19 pandemic, the role of the SCA increases to take …

The Perceptions Of Organizational Managers Regarding Strengths And Gaps Of Knowledge And Skills Of Generation Z Employees, Tori L. Hersey
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
The purpose of the qualitative case study was to explore the perceptions of organizational managers in the north central Florida area regarding the strengths and gaps in knowledge and skills of Generation Z employees. Generation Z is defined in the study as individuals born between the years 1997-2012. Managers of seven occupations, including a state prison facility, first responder, retail, restaurant, transport refrigeration, and grocery industries were asked open-ended questions and personally interviewed to determine any perceived strengths or gaps in the knowledge and skills of the employees falling into the Generation Z cohort. Strengths reported by the managers concerning …

It Could Have Been Great: An Examination Of Kandinsky's Bauhaus Paintings And The Great Synthesis Of The Arts, Deanna Brooks
It Could Have Been Great: An Examination Of Kandinsky's Bauhaus Paintings And The Great Synthesis Of The Arts, Deanna Brooks
Institute for the Humanities Theses
When Nazism descended upon the German art world in the late 1920s and throughout the 1930s, artists were treated as an expendable group of "political undesirables." Among them was Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), who experienced firsthand the political pressure placed on his career, as he attempted to visualize a weltanschauung or "world view," that involved the marriage of different types of art, media, and practices. For Kandinsky the "Great Synthesis of the Arts" revealed the collective historical narrative, to which all artists contributed, and he strove to actualize this lifelong goal over the course of his teaching career at …

The Confucian Factor And Good Fortune In The National College Entrance Examination In China, Samuel Hinton
Curriculum and Instruction Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Background
Confucianism is highly optimistic about human nature. It teaches that ordinary human beings can become awe-inspiring sages and worthies (Confucius himself lived a rather ordinary life). It believes that human beings are teachable, improvable, and perfectible through personal and communal endeavor. In ancient China Confucian education was based on hard work, compliance with state laws, and merit. A large number of students who took the Imperial examination at that time were from lower-class families. These observations are still true about the National College Entrance Examination. Confucius. Confucius regarded Heaven (T'ien) as a positive and personal force in the universe; …
