A Summer Reading Program For Joy And Growth: Using Free Books, Videos, And Little Free Libraries To Empower Students And Parents To Make The Most Of The Summer Months For Reading Growth, Allison Nieboer
Culminating Experience Projects
The summer months provide a prime opportunity for elementary children to grow in their reading skills and reading lives. This project investigates successful summer reading programs that leverage the expertise of parents to mediate the effects of summer slide and encourage summer reading growth. The project culminates in a summer reading program that supports both students and parents. Schools can support students by providing free texts and allowing students to choose these books for themselves. Schools can support parents by providing summer reading tips in the form of short, helpful and practical videos. Both students and parents can be supported …
The Impact Of Prioritization Of Independent Reading On Male, Struggling Adolescent Readers’ Engagement, Motivation, And Achievement, Meagan Wagner
The Impact Of Prioritization Of Independent Reading On Male, Struggling Adolescent Readers’ Engagement, Motivation, And Achievement, Meagan Wagner
Theses and Dissertations
To become better readers, students must read more and more, increasing the volume, complexity, and variety of books chosen. While independent reading is the best avenue by which to do this, many teachers still struggle to devote their limited instructional time to independent reading. Specifically addressing the context of my school, there was a clear distinction in gender and reading: boys were falling behind, less engaged, less motivated to read than girls. This research aimed to address the gender gap in reading by making independent reading a priority in the classroom. As a case study, five male eighth graders were …
Exploring Neurocognitive Processes That Underlie Reading Performance In Children: A Foundational Study, Ayan Mitra
Exploring Neurocognitive Processes That Underlie Reading Performance In Children: A Foundational Study, Ayan Mitra
Theses and Dissertations
With advancement in brain research, neuroscience researchers have collectively informed our understanding of reading-related processes. Despite an extensive body of literature, many educators are not aware of specific neuroimaging findings related to phonological processing and word reading. Therefore, the study builds on this body of research by exploring the connection between the brain and reading scores. Quantitative EEG and standardized academic achievement analyses were performed on 60 school-aged children. Intrahemispheric coherence analysis at rest were conducted across the sample of participants and several coherence networks were extracted and compared to standardized reading achievement scores. Specifically, networks that included Brodmann area …

Should Reading Be A Core Class In Middle School?, Irica R. Dunkley
Should Reading Be A Core Class In Middle School?, Irica R. Dunkley
Essays in Education
This article discusses the value of reading as a core class in middle school. Research has shown that Language Arts, tasked with reading instruction, is insufficient for the development of the reading ability of middle students. Students are also expected to develop their reading skills through other core classes, such as Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics, but the development of reading ability is secondary in these classes. On the contrary, reading as a core class could improve reading achievement as it would be mandatory and provide all middle school students with explicit reading instruction by trained reading teachers.
My Journey As An Emergent Bilingual, Cynthia Villarreal Cantu
My Journey As An Emergent Bilingual, Cynthia Villarreal Cantu
The Qualitative Report
This autoethnography was conducted at an elementary school not far from the South Texas border. I documented how my journey as a kindergarten, first-grade, and second-grade student has impacted me to become a better educator. Through this qualitative study, I planned to determine if my childhood experiences as an emergent bilingual learner have made an impact in my teaching and the connections I have formed with my students. I analyzed observations of my current teaching practices and my elementary report cards and test scores. After observing my students’ interactions among their peers and my reaction towards their conversations, I found …

Autoethnographies Of Reading As An Occupation, Catherine Candler, Randa Mikeska, Kendall Lacy, Nancy Elliott, Audrey Huddleston
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Background: The conceptualization of reading as an occupation is an emerging area, and guides for occupational focus in reading intervention are incompletely formed. We explored our own experiences with reading and awareness of reading as a personal occupation for perspectives to inform our practice.
Methods: We used autoethnography to capture our five separate experiences. These experiences were analyzed collectively for themes using the lens of occupation as framed by the model of occupational adaptation.
Results: Across our experiences, occupational patterns, products, and meaning were identified. Themes in patterns of reading highlighted the challenges of the academic setting …
Lectura En Crisis: La Importancia De La Experiencia De Lo Sensible, Pablo Álvarez F
Lectura En Crisis: La Importancia De La Experiencia De Lo Sensible, Pablo Álvarez F

Exploring First Year Students’ Interest In Reading Academic Texts In An Urban Community College Composition Classroom, Adele J. Doyle
Exploring First Year Students’ Interest In Reading Academic Texts In An Urban Community College Composition Classroom, Adele J. Doyle
Theses and Dissertations
This study explores how the construct of interest may influence first-year community college students’ willingness to engage with academic text assignments. Research on interest theory as presented by Renninger (2009) suggests that students, even those with low self-efficacy or regulation, are more likely to make gains in engagement and/or academic progress, dependent upon how interested those students are in the texts assigned by their teacher. Students from two 2020 spring semester first-year composition courses at a Northeast metropolitan community college were provided with 6 potential academic reading assignments on diverse topics. Students were asked to select one assignment, read it, …

Education reform continues at a rapid pace in American schools, yet many minority students continue to struggle with reading achievement. This quantitative study examines the relationship between self-efficacy and fourth grade reading achievement. The theoretical framework for this study uses Albert Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory and Jerome Bruner’s Constructivist Theory. This research study asked three questions. First, what is the relationship between self-efficacy and student reading achievement? Second, is there a significant relationship between self-concept and socioeconomic status on student reading achievement? Third, is there a significant relationship between self-efficacy on student achievement for any of the independent variables of …

Metacognitive Strategies Used For Reading Comprehension Among Adult Postsecondary Learners, Mary Lukes
Metacognitive Strategies Used For Reading Comprehension Among Adult Postsecondary Learners, Mary Lukes
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractA significant positive correlation between higher metacognitive strategy use and better reading comprehension among native English-speaking children and adult learners of English as an additional language, consistently presented in the literature, has not been consistently or directly found among native English-speaking adult high school graduates who enroll in postsecondary learning programs such as university programs. Consequences for adult learners with lower reading comprehension scores at college entry include significantly lower earnings over their lifespan due in part to greater risk for not completing a postsecondary program. This nonexperimental cross-sectional study was guided by two theoretical frameworks, one for adult reading …

To Note Or Not To Note: Students' Conceptualizations Of Note Taking During Academic Reading In A Developmental Reading Course, Margaret J. O'Kerns
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This grounded theory research study investigated one active reading strategy, note taking, with a goal of creating student-centered, evidence-based curriculum for the developmental reading instructor. Sixteen students participated in a two-part session: a semi-structured interview and a think aloud of an assigned, academic text. The students were asked to discuss their attitudes regarding reading, both academically and for pleasure, and about any previous reading instruction. They were then observed reading their assigned text, an expository article, and queried as to their use (or not) of any note taking procedures or strategies. As an outcome of this study, it became apparent …
