Journalism Through Learning Design, Geoff Decker

Capstones

Abstract

At its core, journalism is a civic enterprise with a mission to help citizens better understand their world and communities. Fulfilling this lofty mission in today’s digital media landscape poses new and evolving challenges, but it also presents a unique opportunity to reexamine the relationship between storytellers and their audiences. Advancements in the learning sciences in recent decades offer important insights into how the mind works. In teaching and learning, pedagogical experts and practitioners increasingly utilize these insights to refine and implement instructional strategies that increase student engagement, motivation, and learning. This capstone project aims to establish a framework …

I Told You That To Tell You This: Metagaming And Metacognition In The Hybrid Classroom, Marc A. Ouellette Dec 2020

I Told You That To Tell You This: Metagaming And Metacognition In The Hybrid Classroom, Marc A. Ouellette

English Faculty Publications

This paper theorizes the use of play and gamified methods to foster metacognition, or strategies for learning and learning about learning, in online graduate instruction. In the process, it calls into question the determinism of “serious” games as being the only means of facilitating metacognition. Ultimately, by adopting metagame approaches—that is, approaches based on0 goals and achievements that are external to the game and/or are developed by the players themselves—metacognition can and does occur because students participate in the development of the rewards. Moreover, any metagame feature ultimately becomes a commentary so that an approach based on metagaming offers its …

Enhancing Emotional Regulation In First Graders, Clarissa Miller Dec 2020

Enhancing Emotional Regulation In First Graders, Clarissa Miller

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Emotional regulation is the ability to have control over one’s emotions; and typically develops in early childhood. Once children reach school age, they tend to be able to manage their emotions. When children are not able to regulate their emotions, they may have poorer social skills, and have challenges when learning in school. To help children further their emotional regulation skills, I have created a three-day lesson for a first grader class at Robert H. Down Elementary School in Pacific Grove, California.

The Importance Of Digital Skills In Education In The Covid-19 Era, Alma V. Lama

UBT International Conference

Education is a fundamental right and we have to make sure we hold on to it despite any crisis and beyond. Just like in all the world, Kosovo has been affected by the pandemic COVID -19 in March 2020. The pandemic situation has changed how things function and it looks like this is going to be a new normal. As a result of it, all industries including the educational institutions, those private and public, had to reimagine how to switch into online performance and computer-based learning. Online learning has served as a lever to continue with education in an online …

Parent – Teacher Voices In Kosovo Schools A Micro-Study On Parent Involvement, Syzane Merovci Oct 2020

Parent – Teacher Voices In Kosovo Schools A Micro-Study On Parent Involvement, Syzane Merovci

UBT International Conference

Parent involvement is crucial toward successful child home learning, involving multitude of duties and responsibilities. Successful schools found that the role of parents in children’s education is invaluable and of paramount importance, therefore it is the most accurate predicator of a child’s success in school. Recent data shows that majority of research agree to the point that despite many strides made by schools to get things better, there are hindered barriers either coming from the family as well as from the school. Creating a sustainable collaborative partnership seems to be the biggest challenge faced by practitioners engaged in school reform, …

Collecting: A Process Of Learning, Growth, And Forming Identity, Nate Trachte

Summit to Salish Sea: Inquiries and Essays

Why do people stuff their homes full of things that have no real utility and attach such great personal attachment to them? It is the relationships involved in any action that provide a lasting sense of satisfaction. Transformation in life as with education is about being able to sit with uncertainty, asking questions, and seeking to understand with the spirit of earnest curiosity. We should seek to hold each other gently in the uncertainty of learning and growth. What if instead of focusing on rushing to meet standards and goals, we slow down and embrace the process of learning missteps …

Youth’S Usage Of New Media: Exploring Learning And Identity Formation, Nurzali Ismail

The Qualitative Report

This study investigated youth’s usage of new media technologies in and out of school as well as how it relates to learning and identity formation. Even though youth’s usage of new media in school is inferior compared to out of school, it does not mean that both contexts are disconnected. In fact, there is a possible relationship established between both contexts and such connection can prove to be significant for youth’s learning and identity formation. Communities of Practice (COPs) was adopted as the theoretical foundation of the study. The research method employed was case study. Data collection involved six 13 …

Architectural Education Environments: Where Teaching Ends And Learning Begins, Rana Elbakly, Mohamed Ibrahim Oct 2020

Architectural Education Environments: Where Teaching Ends And Learning Begins, Rana Elbakly, Mohamed Ibrahim

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Architecture is a fast changing domain. Nevertheless, architectural education in Egypt can often not keep pace with those fast changes. Namely, graduate students start to realize that there are practical experiences like dealing with clients, working in large teams and acquiring knowledge related to architectural software independently which they do not obtain in undergraduate years, but wish that they did! This raises the question of how far should the architecture educational process change from Teaching to Learning ?As a matter of fact, the educational process at any architectural department is defined to a very high extent by the physical attributes …

Implementing 21st Century Learning And Innovation Skills In Classrooms, Amber Soderlund

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This literature review depicts strategies educators can implement to facilitate 21st century learning and innovation skills in classrooms: collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. One challenge educators currently face with implementing these skills in the classroom is being required to move to online learning or other learning formats as safety and health remain a top priority during the pandemic. This has caused teachers to reinvent the way they teach their students to communicate, work with one another, and display critical thinking and creativity skills. Many educators are reinventing teaching in schools without an increase in resources and guidance from the …

The Impact Of Visual Displays On Learning Across The Disciplines: A Systematic Review, Daibao Guo, Erin M. Mctigue, Sharon D. Matthews, Wendi Zimmer

Literacy, Language, and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

The current systematic review aimed to investigate in what ways the incorporation of visual display tasks benefits K-12 students’ content-area learning. After screening 1693 articles at abstract level and a systematic evaluation of methodological quality, we synthesized 44 articles for this review. The qualitative synthesis of the studies is organized by categories of interaction with visual displays (ViDis), instructional support, and types of knowledge and learning. Overall findings indicate the simple inclusion of visual displays does not guarantee a positive learning effect. More detailed findings distinguish three categories of ViDis: author-provided, student-filled-in, and student-created visual displays. Furthermore, we discuss …

Teaching Foundational Aquatic Skills To Children In Open Water Environments, Chris Button, Angela J. Button, Anne-Marie Jackson, Jim D. Cotter, Brian Maraj

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Learning to swim in a swimming pool might not prepare water competence sufficiently for different aquatic environments. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of teaching children water safety knowledge and skills in open water environments (i.e., harbor, river, and surf). The aquatic knowledge and skills of 98 children (7-11 years old) were tested in a swimming pool before, immediately after, and three months after receiving a three-day intensive education program. At pre-test, typically fewer than 50% of children achieved a high level of water safety competence. After the program, competency in each of the six tasks …

Reading Robot, Gillian Watts, Andrew Myers, Sabrinna Tan, Taylor Klein, Omeed Djassemi

General Engineering

Presently, there is an insufficient availability of human experts to assist students in reading competency and comprehension. Our team’s goal was to create an improved socially assistive robot for use by therapists, teachers, and parents to help children and adults develop reading skills while they do not have access to specialists. HAPI is a socially assistive robot that we created with the goal of helping students practice their reading comprehension skills. HAPI enables a student to improve their reading skills without an educator present, while enabling educators to review the student's performance remotely. Design constraints included: physical size, weight, duration …

“Would You Rather Have It Be Accurate Or Diverse?” How Male Middle-School Students Make Sense Of Algorithm Bias, Golnaz Arastoopour Irgens, Jacoya Thompson

Publications

As data-driven decisions become more ubiquitous, it will be critical for youth to understand the impacts of algorithm bias. In this study, we discuss the design of an extra-curricular data science program and examined how the participants (12 males, ages 11 - 13) made sense of algorithm bias and discrimination. We conducted a critical discourse analysis on one classroom discussion. Results suggest that participants showed initial understandings that algorithms contain biases that may perpetuate discrimination.

Supporting The Arts As Disciplines Of Learning. A Book Review Of The Role Of The Arts In Learning: Cultivating Landscapes Of Democracy, Karen Mcgarry

Democracy and Education

Learning through and in partnership with the arts has the potential to expand experiences beyond what can be measured on any standardized test assessment. The arts may offer sites of reflexive contemplation and engagement, extending learning outward, away from disciplinary silos and toward transdisciplinary action learning—a heuristic device enabling multiple modes or processes of multitextual knowing and becoming. In The Role of the Arts in Learning: Cultivating Landscapes of Democracy, the editors nurture a space of consideration toward democratic learning. By harnessing the historical and pragmatic theories and philosophies of John Dewey and Maxine Greene, in concert with additional …
