Teen Dating Violence (TDV) is a topic rapidly increasing in the lives of our youth, however it is not discussed in the schools or in the community. Individuals who suffer from dating violence in their youth are more likely to experience domestic violence with an intimate partner as an adult. This presentation raises awareness of the term “dating violence” and highlights the impact of TDV in the Latino community in an interactive format that includes open discussion of cultural norms and appropriation in the Latino community, which can enable TDV. Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research
Students majoring in education are underrepresented in undergraduate scholarship. To enable teacher candidates to develop and demonstrate their skills in scholarly activities and products, we implemented a well-orchestrated infusion of problem-solving, critical thinking, oral and written communication, collaboration into courses.
In this presentation, we will describe this systematic course-based infusion of scholarly endeavors with examples from courses. In addition, during the past three years, annually we assessed teacher candidates’ scholarly products for critical thinking, informational literacy and writing. Here we will share what we learned from the data, and how we used it to strengthen undergraduate scholarship for future teachers.

Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research
FSU’s Center for Undergraduate Research and Academic Engagement is charged with engaging undergraduates in research and other academic High Impact Practices. This expanded focus allows the integration of research experience within HIPs, especially global engagement, service learning, and innovation/entrepreneurship. While the CRE continues to bolster its community-engaged research efforts, this presentation details our current relationships with campus partners (Center for Leadership and Social Change), the Tallahassee and Florida non-profit and start-up community (UROP), and the global community (Gap Year Fellows/IDEA Grants). The audience will develop ideas for collaborating with partners engaged within communities to support research opportunities for undergraduates.

The researchers’ goal was to design a project implemented in Fall 2018 which studies the effect of using a Helicopter Basic Aircrew Training Device (BATD) on helicopter flight student progression and retention. Measuring the efficacy of the BATD will allow ERAU to determine the need for purchase of additional BATDs in the future. The design included the methodology and preparation of all of the materials required to undertake the Fall project. Recent research points to questions on the value for students studying abroad while in college. Our conceptual paper links the transformative learning theory to the three dimensions of cultural intelligence to highlight the value of study abroad to provide life-changing learning opportunities. Through disorienting dilemmas and a process of cultivating critical reflection, study abroad students will generate new meaning schemes, or “habits of the mind” to view the world. In addition to critical reflection, the role of emotions plays a critical role in the development of self-awareness. In speeded response tasks, the time between external stimuli and the time to react is both minimal and relatively fixed. In accordance with speed-accuracy tradeoff (SAT) theories, reaction time (RT) is often slower after error in order to improve accuracy, which produces post-error slowing. However, in speeded response tasks, typical post-error slowing patterns may not occur. We examined two neural indices of self-regulatory cognitive control, the feedback-related negativity (FRN) and the P300, to identify whether time constraints disrupted the normal processing of performance errors and the refinement of behavior during task execution through cognitive control processes in accord with one’s …

Frogs of the genus Pristimantis are most diverse in northwestern South America. They are distributed from lowland rainforest to elevations of about 4000 m in the Andes. Of the 516 species currently assigned to the genus Pristimantis, 138 species occur in Peru. Herein, we present a new species of Pristimantis from the Cajamarca Region of northern Peru. The new species is known from four male and five female specimens found in high Andean grasslands hiding in the rosette of Puya fastuosa (Bromeliaceae) at 3600 m above sea level. The new species is phenotypically distinguished from its congeners by having …

Since 2007, the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society at the University of Northern Iowa has organized a community outreach program called Halloween House. What started out as a one-room chemistry demonstration show 11 years ago, has now evolved into a huge event in collaboration with other STEM clubs on campus. The event brought in between 800-1000 community members, mainly elementary aged-students, last fall. The collaboration amongst different STEM clubs in physics, biology, earth science, and chemistry allows students to have an interdisciplinary experience, exploring all of the sciences and seeing how they all connect. The Tennessee Promise is a last-dollar scholarship program offering tuition subsidies to eligible state high school graduates that pursue an associate's degrees at one of the participating institutions. The program has inadvertently resulted in fewer traditional-aged students beginning their collegiate journey at four-year colleges and universities. Functional units like career counseling have seen the impact of Promise shift service demands from exploratory- to employment preparatory-centered, as the needs of junior-level transfer students differ from those of traditional-aged freshmen. In January 2018, the Lynchburg College Doctor of Physical Therapy program sent a group of ten first- and second-year students to St. Lucia to provide therapy services to children in need across the island in five different special education schools. The group has been able to work hand-in-hand with the Ministry of Education in St. Lucia for the past three years in order to make a positive impact on the special education students and teachers. Georgia has a growing refugee community (Division of Family and Children Services, n.d.). Successful refugee resettlement and K-12 education is dependent on school personnel understanding the emotional wellness and challenges of this population. Advocating on behalf of this population, this presentation will address the state of refugees in Georgia. Information and discussion will address the various emotional roadblocks experienced by refugees that can be an impediment to successful integration in K-12 schools.
