Panel Discussion: Provost's Open Educational Resource (Oer) Fellows, Billie Franchini, Lenore Horowitz, Marcus Adams, Jeremy Feldblyum, Matthew Ingram
Open Access Day
While the adoption of open educational resources (OERs) in the undergraduate curriculum has the evident benefit of reducing cost to the student, thinking deeply about OER adoption reveals numerous questions: can OERs match the quality of traditional textbooks and other commercial educational resources? Are there problems associated with the current textbook landscape that OERs can solve? And how easily can OERs be integrated into classrooms with established modes of instruction? Each of the Provost’s OER Fellows will discuss briefly some of the most important conclusions from the current OER research literature and discuss these in the context of SUNY Albany …

The individual development plan (IDP) is a career planning tool that aims to assist PhD trainees in self-assessing skills, exploring career paths, developing short- and long-term career goals, and creating action plans to achieve those goals. The National Institutes of Health and many academic institutions have created policies that mandate completion of the IDP by both graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. Despite these policies, little information exists regarding how widely the tool is used and whether it is useful to the career development of PhD trainees. Herein, we present data from a multi-institutional, online survey on the use and effectiveness …

Developing A Research Team: The Successes And Challenges Of Mentoring Undergraduate Students, Bethany Osborne, Ferzana Chaze
Generator at Sheridan
Come and join us to learn about our journey of the last two years as we have built research teams through the work/study program at Sheridan. We've had the opportunity to work with students from across the College, to provide them with incredible opportunities and to do far more than should ever have been possible with the grants we were given. Creativity and innovation have been at the heart of our research approach and the results have been exciting. We look forward to sharing some of the stories with you.

The five-minute story describes a Saturday afternoon at home with children aged 0 and two, while trying to study for my courses. It’s a series of tragi-comical events that are present in some way in every parent's life and how we find the resilience to push forward despite everything.

Automated Marking Scheme For Group Work, Mohammad Arefin
Automated Marking Scheme For Group Work, Mohammad Arefin
Generator at Sheridan
It’s often very difficult to maintain fairness and speed while evaluating group work such as lab reports, projects etc. owing to the fact that not all members participate at the same level and/or some members are more active than the rest within the group. To help, I’ve developed an Excel-based algorithm that can partially automate the evaluation process, thus making it more efficient and faster.
Teaching Tip: The Flipped Classroom, Heng Ngee Mok
Teaching Tip: The Flipped Classroom, Heng Ngee Mok
Heng Ngee MOK
The flipped classroom has been gaining popularity in recent years. In theory, flipping the classroom appears sound: passive learning activities such as unidirectional lectures are pushed to outside class hours in the form of videos, and precious class time is spent on active learning activities. Yet the courses for information systems (IS) undergraduates at the university that the author is teaching at are still conducted in the traditional lecture-in-class, homework-after-class style. In order to increase students’ engagement with the course content and to improve their experience with the course, the author implemented a trial of the flipped classroom model for …
