On Claiming An Education As Transformative Learning, Celine Fitzmaurice, Vicki L. Reitenauer
Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this essay, the authors explore the concept of “claiming an education” and its relationship to transformative learning. Using a dialogue format, the authors situate their perspectives within an articulation of the particular ways that they have been formed as university instructors; forward their views on the vitality of intentionally designed co-learning environments; offer concrete suggestions for the development of co-learning environments within which the claiming of education may occur; and share students’ reflections on the meaning and implications of their transformative experiences for themselves and for their continuing engagement in the world.
Developing A Partnership In Teacher Preparation Program Between Colleges, Universities And School Districts: A Policy Advocacy Document, Leah Gauthier
Developing A Partnership In Teacher Preparation Program Between Colleges, Universities And School Districts: A Policy Advocacy Document, Leah Gauthier
Dissertations
Teachers are leaving the profession at an alarming rate. Many are unprepared for the rigors of the job, and others become overwhelmed with new initiatives. This problem is due in part to school districts in Illinois not currently being a part of the teacher preparation accreditation process for colleges and universities. This policy advocates for creating that partnership. The findings indicate that doing so will build expertise for the new teachers and help them stay in the classrooms. This, in turn, will help improve student achievement.

Reinventing Translation: Toward A Common Language For Scholar-Practitioners, Ann Kowal Smith, Karen R. Nestor
Engaged Management ReView
Translation starts in one language, and converts to a second. But it doesn't change the languages or the people who "speak" them. We propose – instead of translation – the joint development of theory and practice that becomes a common language – a common language of a community of scholar-practitioners. This paper describes the work of two scholar-practitioners committed to addressing a pressing problem of practice: the educational attainment and skills required for positive outcomes in the 21st century workplace. This paper considers the original design and implementation of an innovative, theory-based workplace learning initiative (Books@Work) and, arising from this …

Interprofessional Education Challenges In Contemporary Social Care Placement Education, Aoife Prendergast
The ITB Journal
It is vital in contemporary practice that interprofessional education is effective and it requires engagement from students from a variety of different professions using interactive learning methodologies to develop social care professional student’s knowledge, skills and attitudes, behaviours and perceptions. Interprofessional education is a complex adult learning (andragogy) approach that is most effective when integrated throughout a programme of study moving from the basic to the most complex learning activities that bridge the gap from post-secondary to practice education settings. Educational accreditation standards being developed to stimulate the advancement of interprofessional education will have an impact on policies in both …

Enhancing Early Interventionists' Abilities To Support Caregiver Learning Through Multi-Component, Technology-Mediated Inservice Professional Development, Dana C. Childress
Communication Disorders & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
In order to have qualified service providers from a variety of disciplines (e.g., early childhood special education, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology) who are well-prepared to provide effective early intervention (EI), high quality professional development is needed that is easily accessed by service providers and enhances their abilities to implement specific, evidence-based intervention practices with children and families. Because of the family-centered nature of EI, service providers must be knowledgeable about how to support caregiver learning during EI visits, using practices that are grounded in adult learning theory. The case study research project described in this dissertation addresses those …

The methodology used in this dissertation research was a qualitative case study. The participant was an adult learner enrolled in an online CBE bachelor's degree program at a public institution. My case study used a series of face-to-face interviews, document analysis, participant-guided web tours, and participant observation to collect …
Toolkit For Implementation Of Temporal Artery Thermometers For Neonates, Linda Hargreaves
Toolkit For Implementation Of Temporal Artery Thermometers For Neonates, Linda Hargreaves
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Accurate temperature assessment is essential in neonatal patients and allows for prompt recognition of illness. Temperature can be measured by rectum, which is subject to injury, axillary, which is time-consuming, and temporal artery, which is safe and fast. The purpose of this evidence-based practice quality improvement project was to create an educational toolkit for nurses teaching temporal artery thermometers for routine temperature measurement on neonates, to establish the content validity of the toolkit, and to make recommendations for implementation of the toolkit. The format applied was the Kellogg Logic Model that proceeded from the assumption, to planned work, and results. …
