Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will host pianist Dr. Cole Burger in concert on Thursday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall in Mabee Fine Arts Center. The recital, which is part of Ouachita’s Guest Artist Series, is free and open to the public.

Burger is an instructor in the College of Musical Arts at Bowling Green State University, where he teaches and coordinates class piano and piano pedagogy. He holds degrees in piano performance and economics from Northwestern University and the University of Texas.

Ouachita Baptist University’s Hickingbotham School of Business is one of only nine business schools in the world (among more than 15,000) that is undergraduate-only and accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

AACSB International has announced that 51 business schools, including Ouachita’s Hickingbotham School of Business, have extended their accreditation in business, business and accounting or accounting. Founded in 1916, AACSB is the longest-serving global accrediting body for business schools that offer degrees in business and accounting.

Seven Ouachita Baptist University students recently were selected for the 2017 Arkansas Intercollegiate Band (AIB). They will perform Friday, Feb. 17, at 3 p.m. in Hot Springs, Ark. The concert is free and open to the public.

The AIB is an honor band composed of students who represent college and university bands across Arkansas. Band directors submit nominations, and a selection committee chooses students based on instrumentation needs. The team of Jake Edmondson, Cole Jester and Evan McKinnon won the 8th annual Ouachita Baptist University Business Plan Competition on Feb. 1 with BestBook, an intra-campus book trading system.

“We connect people on campuses trying to sell books with students on campus trying to buy those same books,” explained Jester, a senior Christian studies/Biblical studies and political science double major from Benton, Ark. “Coming in first was extremely significant to us as it validated a business idea we had worked on for months."

Ouachita Baptist University hosted the 50th anniversary of Miss Ouachita Baptist University on Saturday, Feb. 4. The pageant honored former Miss OBU title holders and crowned Tiffany Lee as the 2017 Miss Ouachita Baptist University.

Ouachita Baptist University will host the 50th anniversary Miss Ouachita Baptist University Pageant on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Performing Arts Center. Eight contestants will compete for the 2017 Miss OBU crown. Tickets are $12 each at the door.

Ouachita Baptist University’s 2016 Ouachitonian yearbook earned an All-American ranking from the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) for the second consecutive year. The Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) also recognized the 2016 Ouachitonian as a Gold Medalist in its College Yearbook Critique. These are the highest awards given for yearbooks in the two organizations’ critiques.

Broadway performer Jacob Keith Watson, a 2011 Ouachita Baptist University graduate, will return to his alma mater Jan. 26-27 to perform a recital and lead a masterclass.

Watson will be accompanied by collaborative pianist Jason Weisinger, who has performed with the Boston POPS and is scheduled to perform in a workshop in conjunction with the Metropolitan Opera and Cincinnati Opera.

The Jan. 26 recital will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Ouachita’s McBeth Recital Hall in Mabee Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $10 each, and the performance is open to the public.

Ouachita Baptist University’s Wind Ensemble recently released a CD titled “Simple Gifts.” The CDs costs $15 and features the 2012 and 2016 Wind Ensembles.

The 2016 Wind Ensemble performs the CD’s title section “Simple Gifts: Four Shaker Songs” by Frank Ticheli, including “In Yonder Valley,” “Dance,” “Here Take This Lovely Flower” and “Simple Gifts.” Other selections performed by this ensemble are the “Mayflower Overture” by Ron Nelson and “A Sacred Suite” by Brant Karrick, which includes “Spirit of the Ages Fanfare,” “Consolation” and “True Happiness/How Firm a Foundation.”

The story of the Quapaw, or Downstream People, and their language is an integral part of both the American Indian experience and the larger, universal tapestry of multilingualism. Despite historical setbacks and contemporary challenges, preserving the virtually extinct Quapaw language adds to the diverse cultural narrative of the Americas and shares a nation’s unique story with the rest of humanity. Consulting linguists, historical records, tribal members, and experts on indigenous studies, this project aims to answer questions concerning the state of the Quapaw tongue: how it arrived at virtual extinction, what is being done to preserve it, and the challenges …
