This article aims to bring together various threads in the eclectic literature that make up the scholarship around the theme of Quantitative Literacy. In investigating the meanings of terms like "quantitative literacy," "quantitative reasoning," and "numeracy," we seek common ground, common themes, common goals and aspirations of a community of practitioners. A decade ago, these terms were relatively new in the public sphere; today policy makers and accrediting agencies are routinely inserting them into general education conversations. Masking Mentoring: Critical (Race) Care (For, From) Black Males In Special Education, Vonzell Agosto, Roderick Jones Jan 2016

Masking Mentoring: Critical (Race) Care (For, From) Black Males In Special Education, Vonzell Agosto, Roderick Jones

Vonzell Agosto

This chapter addresses institutional racism as an impediment to the success of Black males in special education, whether they are students or faculty. Extrapolating from their personal narratives and relevant literature, the authors provide a counternarrative about the mentoring and care of Black males and by Black males that entails the practice of masking. The lenses of critical race theory (CRT) and care theory support the development of an ethical and moral leadership framework of what can be seen as critical (race) care, which includes ethics of care and risk and political clarity.

The Inside, Outside, and Upside Downs of Children's Literature: From Poets and Pop-ups to Princesses and Porridge

Children’s literature is written for children and youth, but the analysis of children’s literature requires careful attention to text as well insightful interpretation of the ways in which authors and illustrators present the human condition, the physical world, imaginative experiences, and global forces. Children's literature is also a $4-billion-a-year industry that impacts social practices, politics, financial markets, schools, literacy rates, history, and art. Whatever the reason for your interest, children’s literature is a big deal.

Using Ethnodrama To Understand And Communicate Interview Data: Paper For The Arts-Based Educational Research Sig 2015 Annual Meeting Of The American Educational Research Association, Charles Vanover Jan 2016

Using Ethnodrama To Understand And Communicate Interview Data: Paper For The Arts-Based Educational Research Sig 2015 Annual Meeting Of The American Educational Research Association, Charles Vanover

USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications

In this paper, I discuss my efforts to use arts-based methods to understand teachers' work in schools shaped by the No Child Left Behind law and other mass reforms. I describe how the process of writing, rehearsing, and putting up multiple performances of six ethnodramas allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the data I used as the source material for these productions. Ethnodrama changed my view of what mattered in my data, and this understanding guided my choices as I created the scripts and worked with actors and community members to put up the shows.
