The Rise Of Adhd And Effects Of Alternative Treatment In Adolescents, Jennifer Villarina Apr 2015

The Rise Of Adhd And Effects Of Alternative Treatment In Adolescents, Jennifer Villarina

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a syndrome that makes it difficult for people to focus, control behavior and regulate activity. Many with ADHD move constantly and are impulsive. They cannot seem to follow directions and are easily bored or frustrated with tasks. Although these behaviors are normally observed in children, they are more severe in those with ADHD. The symptoms of ADHD make it difficult for children to function at school and home. Exposure to toxins, injury to the brain and imbalance of neurotransmitters can affect the development of the brain (LeFever, Arcona & Antonuccio, 2003). The most common …

Identification Of Sluggish Cognitive Tempo By Teachers, Rachel Meisinger Apr 2015

Identification Of Sluggish Cognitive Tempo By Teachers, Rachel Meisinger

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Children with Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT) are characterized by a hypoactive, sluggish behavior pattern that does not fully fit the conceptualization of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as was previously believed. Interest in this topic has surged recently, perhaps due to the fact that many researchers now view SCT as a construct that exists outside of ADHD (Barkley, 2014). SCT is associated with unique etiology, impairment, and comorbidities. Unlike ADHD, SCT represents a more passive form of inattention that may not disrupt the classroom. Thus, SCT may go unnoticed despite the fact that it is related to many academic and social …

Premarital Sex In College Students: Factors That Influence Their Attitudes And Practices, Kara Nonnemacher, Chi-En Hwang, Leah Furrow Apr 2015

Premarital Sex In College Students: Factors That Influence Their Attitudes And Practices, Kara Nonnemacher, Chi-En Hwang, Leah Furrow

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

Sex education continues to be a controversial topic in the United States. This study examines the relationship between sex education styles and actual sexual practices of students from several Midwest universities (n=1042). More specifically, this study looks at the difference in effectiveness between parent and teacher sex education, the effectiveness of safe sex education, and the sexual behavior perceptions of those who practice abstinence. Results showed that parents had a greater influence over their children than school-based sex education, that safe sex education promotes protected sex, and that the perceived acceptance of non-intercourse sexual behavior correlates negatively with abstinence education.

Psychological Readiness Effect On Return-To-Play In Collegiate Athletes, Kurt Gruenberg, Kurt D. Beachy Apr 2015

Psychological Readiness Effect On Return-To-Play In Collegiate Athletes, Kurt Gruenberg, Kurt D. Beachy

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

Psychological readiness has been studied extensively over the past 20 years.2,4,6 It is becoming increasingly important to understand completely how athletes psychologically deal with a physical injury. Current research has identified specific intrinsic and extrinsic factors that have shown to present negative effects on athletes.1,4,5 They have also identified specific psychological factors that play a major role in the rehabilitation process.2,3,5 However, current research has not studied the entire psychological experience of athletes and their determining factors. They also have not used surveys that allow for both qualitative and quantitative data to be collected. Therefore, the purpose of this study …

Adhd: Maladaptive Disorder Or Evolutionary Adaptation, Jeremiah Hopes Mar 2015

Adhd: Maladaptive Disorder Or Evolutionary Adaptation, Jeremiah Hopes

National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder influences disruptive behavior, school suspensions, and at times, even criminal behavior. Despite its maladaptive nature, evolutionary psychology introduces the possibility that ADHD once served a purpose to humanity. This presentation will examine research that presents the symptoms of ADHD as adaptive rather than maladaptive, analyze the implications of viewing inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity as strengths, and discuss how parents, teachers, helping professionals, school administrators, and physicians can use this information to assist children impacted by ADHD.

Low Fidelity Flight Simulation In Collegiate Aviation, Vladimir N. Risukhin Jan 2015

Low Fidelity Flight Simulation In Collegiate Aviation, Vladimir N. Risukhin

Aviation / Aeronautics / Aerospace International Research Conference

Aviation college pilot training programs, lessons and exercises contain portions that do not require training in sophisticated and highly expensive full flight simulators and flight training devices (FTD) with high fidelity of simulation, or in real aircraft flights. Relatively inexpensive personal-computer-based flight simulation facilities named low fidelity simulators (LFS) can boost development of aircraft pilots’ cognitive and behavioral skills. The paper attempts to reveal how the LFS can support aviation college flight training and research activities. In the Western Michigan University College of Aviation, peer mentoring technique proven to be helpful in higher education institutions has been applied to flight …
