Revisiting The Roles And Responsibilities Of Speech-Language Therapists In South African Schools, Anna Maria Wium, Brenda Louw

Brenda Louw

Th e role of speech-language therapists (SLTs) in schools in South Africa needs to be revisited based on the changing educational needs in the country. This article builds on a paper by Kathard et al. (2011), which discussed the changing needs of the country with regard to the role of SLTs working in schools. South African policy changes indicated a shift from supporting the child to supporting the teacher, but also place more emphasis on the support of all learners in literacy in an effort to address past inequities. Integration Of Computers And Related Technologies Into Deaf Education Teacher Preparation Programs, Len Roberson Mar 2013

Integration Of Computers And Related Technologies Into Deaf Education Teacher Preparation Programs, Len Roberson

Len Roberson

The study examined how computer technology is used, modeled, and taught in programs that prepare future teachers of students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Data were collected through two self-reported survey instruments sent to participants from two different groups: (a) deaf education faculty (n = 233) and (b) administrators of programs serving students who are deaf or hard of hearing (n = 100). Among the faculty who responded to the survey, 99% said they used computers and printers for instruction during class, 84% said they used VCRs for instruction during class, and 56% said they used video cameras …

A Case For Training Signed Language Interpreters For Legal Specialization, Len Roberson, Deb Russell, Risa Shaw

Len Roberson

Interpreting in legal settings has become a specialized area of practice that requires specific training and ongoing professional development. This study examined the training and professional development needs of ASL–English interpreters in North America. The 1,995 participants in an online survey included interpreters who provide services in legal settings and those who do not. The data suggest that interpreters desire certificate programs that are delivered in multiple formats, including face-to-face intensive experiences, online distance learning, and regional and local mentoring experiences. The training content areas participants wanted most include specialized interactions; legal discourse across a range of settings including police, …

Rethinking Classroom Participation, Rita Gardiner Mar 2013

Rethinking Classroom Participation, Rita Gardiner

Rita A Gardiner

Within the classroom, feelings of alienation can adversely affect students’ ability to speak, and thus serve to reproduce social inequities. This is especially the case with some first year students who may not have had many opportunities to speak, as well as students from different cultures where talking in class may not be the norm. To help mitigate power imbalances, it is necessary to develop a diversity of teaching practices and approaches to learning to ensure that each student feels that her class participation counts. In this workshop, I want to consider ways in which it is possible to encourage …

Inhibition Of Bacillus Cereus Growth By Bacteriocin Producing Bacillus Subtilis Isolated From Fermented Baobab Seeds (Maari) Is Substrate Dependent, Donatien Kaboré, Dennis S. Nielsen, Hagrétoui Sawadogo-Lingan, Bréhima Diawara, Mamoudou H. Dicko Prof., Mogens Jakobsen, Line Thorsen

Pr. Mamoudou H. DICKO, PhD

Maari is a spontaneously alkaline fermented food condiment made from baobab tree seeds. Due to the spontaneous nature of maari fermentations growth of the opportunistic human pathogen Bacillus cereus is occasionally observed. Bacillus subtilis strains are important for alkaline seed fermentations because of their enzymatic activities contributing to desirable texture, flavor and pH development. Some B. subtilis strains have antimicrobial properties against B. cereus. In the present work, three bacteriocin producing B. subtilis strains (B3, B122 and B222) isolated from maari were tested. The production of antimicrobial activity by the three strains was found to be greatly influenced by the …

Community Engagement, Organization, And Development For Public Health Practice-Instructor’S Manual, Frederick Murphy, Sydney Freeman Jr. Dec 2012

Community Engagement, Organization, And Development For Public Health Practice-Instructor’S Manual, Frederick Murphy, Sydney Freeman Jr.

Sydney Freeman Jr., PhD, CFD, COI

It is the intent of the CEOD for Public Health Practice textbook and Instructors manuel to spin off its instructional approach from that of the 5-E Learning Cycle model, which promotes student/learner inquiry and exploration as a process for learning science. The Learning Cycle, originally credited to Karplus and Thier and later modified by Roger Bybee for the Biological Science Curriculum Study (BSCS) project, proposes that learning something new, or understanding something familiar in greater depth, involves making sense of both our prior experience and our first-hand knowledge gained from new explorations. As mentioned, the traditional 5-E model divides learning …

Beyond Understanding: Intercultural Teacher Empathy In The Teaching Of English As An Additional Language, Maggie Mcalinden Dec 2012

Beyond Understanding: Intercultural Teacher Empathy In The Teaching Of English As An Additional Language, Maggie Mcalinden

Dr Maggie McAlinden

In the context of increasing linguistic and cultural diversity of learners in Australian education, this phd study explored teacher empathy in a diverse tertiary education setting. The study developed a tentative, constructivist grounded theory of teacher empathy and interculturality. The findings point to the importance of teacher identity and the experience, expression and interpretation of emotion and meaning in culturally and linguistically diverse educational settings. The theory and its implications challenge, inform and support educators in Australia and beyond to meet the demand to become critical, interculturally effective educators.
