Investigating An Afterschool Program For Black Teenage Males Designed To Increase Self-Efficacy, Marvin Lee Byrd Aug 2012

Investigating An Afterschool Program For Black Teenage Males Designed To Increase Self-Efficacy, Marvin Lee Byrd

Dissertations

This is a study of the experiences of Black male teenagers in an after-school program designed to increase self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is the measure of one‘s confidence in their capacity to achieve an ultimate goal. Inequality has proven to be a cyclical state-of-being that plagues families from one generation to another. In many instances, Black families find themselves in this cycle of inequality. Education seems to be a factor in breaking the cycle. This study was developed under the belief that there are also qualitative components that must be considered when it comes to erasing the gap between minority and white …

Exploring Relationships Among Teaching Styles, Teachers' Perceptions Of Their Self-Efficacy And Students' Mathematics Achievement, Christi Davis-Langston Feb 2012

Exploring Relationships Among Teaching Styles, Teachers' Perceptions Of Their Self-Efficacy And Students' Mathematics Achievement, Christi Davis-Langston

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among elementary school teachers' teaching styles, their perceptions of self-efficacy in teaching mathematics, and student mathematics achievement. Analysis of data collected from 95 teachers found small to moderate correlations between teaching style and measures of mathematics achievement. No statistically significant relationships were found between elementary school teachers' self-efficacy and students' mathematics achievement levels. Mathematics achievement (numbers and operations, geometry, and percentage of students who exceeded standards on the CRCT) was predicted by teaching styles (delegator, facilitator, and expert). Although the relationships were statistically significant, little variance in achievement was explained …

Video Self-Modeling And Improving Oral Reading Fluency, Wanda G. Chandler Jan 2012

Video Self-Modeling And Improving Oral Reading Fluency, Wanda G. Chandler

Special Education Faculty Publications

Self-modeling can take different forms but is described as a process where one observes one’s own successful behavior and learns from it without dependence on any particular medium. In this study, two separate experiments were conducted to evaluate a video self-modeling (VSM) feedforward intervention. VSM feedforward (independent variable, IV), was applied as an intervention to improve oral-reading fluency (dependent variable, DV). An adapted multiple-probe baseline, single-subject research design with a pre-test and post-test standardized reading assessment was employed for both experiments.

Participants included eight students with disabilities and a history of emotional and behavior problems in middle-school, special education, self-contained …

Academic Engagement Of College Student Leaders, Galen R. Crawford Jan 2012

Academic Engagement Of College Student Leaders, Galen R. Crawford

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Academic engagement of college student leaders may be affected due to the amount of time and energy that is needed to lead a student organization. This affect is tested through a mixed method research design where self-generated questions in conjunction with portions of the National Survey of Student Engagement and Cooperative Institutional Research Program are used to gain a deeper understanding of academic engagement of college student leaders. Results of the study indicate that student leaders have a relatively high level of academic engagement. Student Affairs professionals can use this research to gain an understanding of the complexity of academic …

A Descriptive, Survey Research Study Of The Student Characteristics Influencing The Four Theoretical Sources Of Mathematical Self-Efficacy Of College Freshmen, Tonja Motley Locklear Jan 2012

A Descriptive, Survey Research Study Of The Student Characteristics Influencing The Four Theoretical Sources Of Mathematical Self-Efficacy Of College Freshmen, Tonja Motley Locklear

Theses and Dissertations--Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education

The Sources of Middle School Mathematics Self-Efficacy Scale (Usher & Pajares, 2009) was adapted for use in this study investigating the impact that gender, race, sexual orientation, hometown location (rural, suburban, or urban), high school GPA, college GPA and letter grade of a mathematics course in the previous semester had on the four sources of mathematical self-efficacy of 102 college freshmen attending three small, private, liberal arts institutions. Even though this study found no interaction effects between the student characteristics, the four sources of mathematical self-efficacy, or the three subcategories of the vicarious experience construct, this study did find statistically …

Improving Performance: Examining The Link Between Self-Efficacy And Support For Secondary Female Math Teachers, Veronique Demetria Zimmerman-Brown Jan 2012

Improving Performance: Examining The Link Between Self-Efficacy And Support For Secondary Female Math Teachers, Veronique Demetria Zimmerman-Brown

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this study was to explore the possible relationship between teacher self-efficacy among secondary math teachers in Alabama and administrative support, teacher/colleague support, and support through resources. The study also examined whether gender or race related to teachers' sense of self-efficacy. Examining self-efficacy for secondary math teachers is an important step in the strategic support of these individuals and improving student achievement in mathematics. Indeed, a closer look at district and school level support factors related to the self-efficacy of teachers is warranted, given continuing concerns over student math performance. A quantitative study of 105 Alabama secondary math …

How Older Adults With Age-Related Macular Degeneration Living In A Southeastern Metropolitan Area Develop Physical Activity Self-Efficacy, A Grounded Theory Study, Elizabeth Anne Barstow Jan 2012

How Older Adults With Age-Related Macular Degeneration Living In A Southeastern Metropolitan Area Develop Physical Activity Self-Efficacy, A Grounded Theory Study, Elizabeth Anne Barstow

All ETDs from UAB

HOW OLDER ADULTS WITH AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION LIVING IN A SOUTHEASTERN METROPOLITAN AREA DEVELOP PHYSICAL ACTIVITY SELF-EFFICACY, A GROUNDED THEORY STUDY ABSTRACT This qualitative grounded theory study explored the process of Physical Activity Self-Efficacy development among older adults with age-related macular degeneration in a southeastern metropolitan area. According to the United States Administration on Aging, the population of individuals over 65 will be 88.5 million by the year 2050, doubling its 2010 estimates. As our population ages, so does the prevalence of chronic conditions. One of these chronic conditions, age-related macular degeneration, is the leading cause of vision loss in …
