Assessing Nets-T Performance In Teacher Candidates: Exploring The Wayfind Teacher Assessment, Savilla I. Banister

Savilla I Banister

To effectively integrate digital technologies in K–12 schools, teachers must be provided with undergraduate experiences that strongly support these integration resources and strategies. The National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS•T) provide a framework for teacher candidates and inservice teachers to identify their accomplishments in this realm. Using the NETS•T to deliver undergraduate teacher education curriculum, and requiring teacher candidates to document their abilities related to the NETS•T can support meaningful development for the candidates. This study examines the use of the Wayfind Teacher Assessment as a tool for determining the proficiencies of teacher candidates in their final year of …

From Collections To Laboratories To Centers: Development Of The Curriculum Materials Collections Or Centers To 1940, Rita Kohrman

Rita Kohrman

The need for curriculum materials collections/centers is evident with the study of the development of education practices in the United States. "Keeping-school" was viewed with such disdain that anyone without training was believed to be able to teach - "Any farmer can teach" (Bowen, 1887, p. 14). As education became more important to the growth of the nation and its citizens, teacher preparation changed from mimicking how one was taught to being viewed as a science and requiring its own laboratories similar to science and medical laboratories.

Multicultural Literature For Children And Young Adults., Krishna Bista Dec 2011

Multicultural Literature For Children And Young Adults., Krishna Bista

Krishna Bista

In the selection of multicultural literature for children and young adults, educators and researchers focus on two main controversial issues—authority and authenticity—that the authors portray in their writing. What type of author can accurately portray realistic pictures of minority cultures in multicultural literature for young adults? Must it be written by a member of that particular ethnic group? Does it become something different if it is written by an outsider of the group?

Reclaiming The "Scholar" In Scholar-Practitioner, Rishi Sriram, Meghan Oster

Rishi Sriram, Ph.D.

Scholars and practitioners continuously espouse the importance of research in student affairs work. This study empirically examined student affairs professionals’ engagement in research. Results indicated that professionals desire to engage research, but struggle to do so regularly. Gender and education are not factors in level of research engagement, but job level is. The Need For Fire Service Professional Development, R. Jeffery Maxfield, John R. Fisher Dec 2011

The Need For Fire Service Professional Development, R. Jeffery Maxfield, John R. Fisher

Dr. John R. Fisher

The importance of fire and emergency services professional development standards has never been more apparent than during the last few years. With the events of September 11, 2001, the need for improved leadership in the emergency services has become evident. The International Association of Fire Chiefs has introduced a professional development standards model, based on a definition of professional development, which is “the planned, progressive life-long process of education, training, self-development, and experience” (IAFC, 2003). Their standard recognizes that emergency response training activities are more prevalent in the early stages of a career and that organizational skills grow with a …

Misconceptions About “Misconceptions”: Preservice Secondary Science Teachers’ Views On The Value And Role Of Student Ideas., Douglas B. Larkin

Douglas B. Larkin

There remains a lack of agreement in the field of science education as to whether student “misconceptions” ought to be considered obstacles or resources, and this has implications for the ways in which prospective teachers think about the value of their students’ ideas. This empirical study examines how fourteen preservice secondary science teachers in four different science teacher preparation programs interpreted the rationale for eliciting student ideas. The findings indicate that the preservice teachers in this study showed an increase in recognizing the importance of student ideas, yet not all took the same view of their role and value in …

Future Capability Of Education To Embrace The Knowledge Economy, David Lynch, Rebecca Deagan

Professor David Lynch

The 2000 epoch is known as the Knowledge Economy and there has been much written about its impact on society. Despite many calls for systems of education to change to better reflect this fundamentally different socioeconomic circumstance, it appears the traditional classroom/ schooling regime prevails. With these points in mind this chapter examines the Knowledge Economy using a theoretical framework that makes explicit the implications for schools and teachers.
