L’ÉDucation À La ToléRance Dans Les Programmes D’ÉTudes En Vigueur Au QuéBec, Simon Lavoie, France Jutras

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

This study examines the perceptions of teacher candidates (student teachers) participating in a faculty-supervised, international teaching placement in Italian schools. Survey responses and journal reflections, supported by faculty field notes indicate that the benefits could be categorized in four main areas such as: the development of resourcefulness and resilience; increased familiarity with the conditions of international teaching employment; a greater awareness of cultural literacy and comparative education; and an enhancement of language sensitivities and strategies for communicating and teaching. Recommendations suggest that professional growth of the teacher candidates is dependent on sufficient preparation, faculty support and immersion in the experience. …

Shifting Aims Of Aid To Education, Christian M. Dasilva Dec 2011

Shifting Aims Of Aid To Education, Christian M. Dasilva

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

This paper examines the profound and steady influence of aid and aid modalities on the education agenda in Africa and argues that, ultimately, the broader intent of Education for All as advocated at Jomtien and Dakar was narrowed to an almost singular focus on Universal Primary Education. This narrowing phenomenon is attributed to donor obsession with targets and comes at the expense of true ownership while compromising quality and upstream linkages in the education systems of Tanzania and other African countries. The paper concludes with some of the lessons learned and possible future orientations of aid to education for development. …

An Action Research Inquiry Into The Relationship Among Aerobic Activities, Memory, And Stress With Students Identified As Gifted, Denise Marie Ford

Dissertations

Students identified as gifted come from varying socio-economic strata and nationalities with a range of talents and temperaments comprising a diverse community. They may experience stress for a variety of reasons. Although a certain amount of stress can enhance the learning process, too much stress can impede learning, especially memory. Strategies have been offered for relieving stress, yet the benefits of physical activities as stress reducers for the gifted have frequently been overlooked. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among aerobic activity, stress, and memory ability in students in an elementary school gifted program. An exceptional …

A Conceptual Learner-Centered E-Learning Framework, Fletcher H. Glancy, Susan K. Isenberg Dec 2011

A Conceptual Learner-Centered E-Learning Framework, Fletcher H. Glancy, Susan K. Isenberg

Faculty Scholarship

e-Learning has increased rapidly in higher education. Most online education attempts to mirror the traditional face-to-face (FtF) classroom with less than favourable results. This paper proposes a conceptual e-learning framework based on andragogy theory, transformative learning theory, and media synchronicity theory. The conceptual e-learning framework supports the self-directed learning. e-learning based on this framework has the potential to out-perform not only current learning management systems such as Blackboard, but also traditional FtF learning for adult education and with different and better outcomes. Results of early testing of the concept showed increased learner’s online activity, innovation, and creativity.

This action research project looked at whether students could engage in critical talk utilizing young adult literature in the social studies classroom. Research indicated that students who were presented with multiple perspectives and documents in the social studies classroom did achieve critical talk. To examine this I utilized the four dimensions of critical literacy. I created my own lessons per each dimension. I analyzed the data based on the four dimensions framework for data analysis. It is evident that students who were exposed to critical literacy with a young adult novel in the social studies classroom did achieve and utilize …

Assessing The Authenticity Of The Document-Based Question Featured Within The New York State Global History And Geography Regents, Clinton Depew

Education Masters

This study questioned the validity of the Global History and Geography Regents exam DBQ as an authentic learning event and assessment. The previous five years of the Global History and Geography Regents DBQs administered in June were evaluated to assess the authenticity of the documents in regards to their context, the level of questioning featured in the task and constructed response questions, and the readability levels of the documents. Ultimately the analysis of the data disproved the validity of the DBQ as an authentic task as presented in the Global History and Geography Regents. In the end, teachers must infuse …

Data was collected through using three phonics strategies, letter and sound assessments, interviews, questionnaires, and observations. Four out of the five students were able to increase their letter-sound acquisition knowledge by identifying more letters and sounds on the assessments following the initial. Educators should use phonics strategies as a tool to enhance their instruction since the students …

The Effects Of Electronic Books On The Reading Experience Of First Grade Students, Ashley Melinis Dec 2011

The Effects Of Electronic Books On The Reading Experience Of First Grade Students, Ashley Melinis

Education Masters

This study examines the effect of electronic books on the reading experience of first grade students. Data was collected through observations, audio recordings of student retellings, interviews, and questionnaires on the student‘s reading experiences on the computer and Nook. The study reveals that electronic books motivate and engage all students, help strengthen struggling readers‘ text comprehension, provide supportive features for word reading, but also have potentially distracting features. Therefore, teachers should use electronic books in the classroom to foster technology and literacy skills and motivate struggling and reluctant readers, but must carefully select texts and train students on their use.
